Background To understand the molecular basis of virulence variability in Entamoeba histolytica , this study presents results about differential gene expression induced by E. histolytica trophozoites in liver of hamsters in order to produce experimental amebic liver abscess (ALA) and consequently reactivate its virulence. Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2, pathogenic for eels, is also an opportunistic pathogen for humans

We report that the eel pathogen Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 is also an opportunistic pathogen for humans. Results from a detailed comparative study using reference strains of both biotypes revealed that the clinical strain ATCC 33817, originally isolated from a human leg wound and classified as V. vulnificus (no reference on its biotype is noted), belongs to biotype 2 of the species. As a biotype 2 strain, it is negative for indole and pathogenic for eels and mice, harbors two plasmids of high MrS, and belongs to serogroup E, recently proposed as characteristic of biotype 2 strains. Objective :To assess the function of the optic pathway in type 2 diabetics without retinopathy (40 subjects) or with mild Non Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (40 subjects). Methods: VEPs , elicited by means of pattern-reversal stimulation, were studied in a group of 80 non-insulin-dependent diabetics . Results: In subjects suffering from diabetes for less than 10 years, with mild retinopathy or without retinopathy, the amplitude N75-P100 decreased, and this is statistically significant with stimulation at 15’. Fillets:Cues for connections in Focus+Context views of graph-like diagrams

We apply fillets-smoothing of sharp angles at the joints-between the connections and nodes of graph-like diagrams. In situations where the graph layout is constrained, e.g. Focus+Context views or views where the coordinates of the nodes are informative, fillets can clarify the relationships considerably without altering the layout. A visual search experiment supports our hypothesis that with fillets it is considerably easier to perceive node-connection structures. We discuss algorithms with different tradeoffs for flexibility and performance for rendering these connections in a single pass using OpenGL.
