The development of digital technologies has fostered basic transformations in the public sphere, reflected in the typology of media outlets, forms of organ…
Local State-Society Relations in European Countries: Main Findings
2020
The chapter details and discusses the main findings of a quantitative and qualitative comparative analysis of institutionalized networks of local state-society relations in 22 European countries. It provides empirical validation for the conceptual characterization of local state-society relations based on the dimensions of autonomy, coherence and relevance as well as the subsequent typology of networks. Moreover, it discusses and tries to explain differences in local state-society relations showcased by the country chapters of the book. First, it discusses whether countries and national infrastructures for local governance explain these differences. Second, it discusses whether the policy s…
Seismic Behavior of Lisbon Mixed Masonry-RC Buildings With Historical Value: A Contribution for the Practical Assessment
2018
The fact that linear analysis is still the most used procedure in the design engineering offices, studies which addresses issues associated to the estimation of the structural behavior factor values are relevant. In this study, the behavior factor of a particular type of mixed masonry-reinforced concrete buildings in Lisbon is estimated. The typology chosen in this study represents 30% of building stock in Lisbon; these buildings were built between 1930 and 1960 and thus were designed without considering the seismic-design requirements proposed in current codes. The evaluation of the behavior factors was based on the use of nonlinear static analyses, performed in the form of the sensitivity…
Radical analyticity and radical pro-drop scenarios of diachronic change in East and mainland Southeast Asia, West Africa and Pidgins and Creoles
2020
Abstract The paucity or absence of inflectional morphology (radical analyticity) and the omission of verbal arguments with no concomitant agreement (radical pro-drop) are well-known characteristics of East and mainland Southeast Asian languages (EMSEA). Both of them have a special status in typology and linguistic theory. Radical analyticity is known under the term of ‘morphological isolation’ and has recently been described as ‘diachronically anomalous’ (McWhorter 2016), while radical pro-drop is a theoretical challenge since Rizzi (1986). The present paper offers an alternative view on these characteristics based on data from EMSEA languages, radically analytic West African languages and …
Profiling Major Sport Event Visitors: The 2002 Commonwealth Games
2007
It has become common practice for governments and municipalities around the world to bid for the right to host a major sporting event. Prior to embarking on the bidding process, politicians attempt to determine whether such an event will be of value to their municipality; and often focus on the estimated economic consequences of hosting such an event. Frequently, studies are commissioned to predict the event's economic value. However, these studies often miscalculate the potential impact of sport event visitors as consumers. We argue that enhanced profiling of these visitors will enable a more accurate assessment of economic impact. The current research surveys 1,196 spectators of the 2002 …
Resilience in Organizations and Societies: The State of the Art and Three Organizing Principles for Moving Forward
2021
AbstractResilience has attracted a multitude of scholars from diverse backgrounds and disciplines as it is a desired feature for responding to the adversities that modern societal systems face, not least the Covid-19 pandemic. Existing research displays little convergence on the definition of the concept making a robust theoretical framework and empirical understanding of resilience highly desirable. The aim of this chapter is to provide a more holistic understanding of the complex phenomenon of resilience from a multi-sectorial, cross-national and multidisciplinary perspective by proposing an original approach into the state of the art that might enhance future research. This chapter ident…
Clustering cities through urban metrics analysis
2017
[EN] This paper describes a process for measuring and characterizing urban morphological zones. These urban zones are delineated for the entire area of Spain, independently of administrative boundaries and excluding demographic data, using a high resolution land-use dataset. Given the rich information available on land cover and subsequently assigned population data, it is possible to calculate a set of urban spatial metrics to classify these urban zones into homogenous morphological groups. Four types of urban agglomerations are identified in Spain by working with these urban metrics and applying a final cluster analysis. Although these groups have a general complex monocentric typology, e…
Information assets: A typology of disclosed and non-disclosed information
2020
Abstract The debate surrounding the value of disclosed and non-disclosed information as a competitive element has stalled; it has not been possible to make a universal, precise claim as to their potential to generate competitive advantages. This empirical inconsistency can be explained in part by the heterogeneity of information assets, which can give rise to different information dimensions, each offering different potential for generating results depending on the degree to which they meet the conditions of complementarity and co-specialization with other resources. This article helps to move forward on this issue by presenting a theoretical construct of the concept “information assets" an…
Patterns of conflict and enrichment in work-family balance: A three-dimensional typology
2013
Abstract A four-dimensional typology of work-family balance (WFB) that has previously been reported was tested in four samples: Finnish nurses (n=662), Slovenian nurses (n=667), Finnish health and social care workers (n=1493) and Finnish service sector employees (n=827). Latent profile analyses identified three rather than four types of WFB in each sample. In line with the four-dimensional typology, a Beneficial type (56% to 70% of the participants), experiencing high work-to-family and family-to-work enrichment (WFE and FWE) and low work-to-family and family-to-work conflict (WFC and FWC), and an Active type (15% to 20%), experiencing high WFC, FWC, WFE and FWE, emerged; however, the Harmf…
