Simple, Fast, Bright, and Stable Light Sources

2012

In this work we show that solution-processed light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) based on only an ionic iridium complex and a small amount of ionic liquid exhibit exceptionally good performances when applying a pulsed current: sub-second turn-on times and almost constant high luminances (>600 cd m(-2) ) and power efficiencies over the first 600 h. This demonstrates the potential of LECs for applications in solid-state signage and lighting.

Some substrates and inhibitors of cytosolic epoxide hydrolase induce sister-chromatid exchanges in mammalian cells, but do not induce gene mutations …

1993

Abstract Trans -stilbene oxide, trans -β-methylstyrene, 7,8-oxide, trans -β-ethylstyrene, 7,8-oxide, trans -β-propylstyrene 7,8-oxide and 4-fluorochalcone oxide were investigated for genotoxic activity in bacterial and mammalian cells, in the absence of external xenobiotic-metabolising systems. All compounds strongly enhanced the frequency of sister-chromatid exchanges (SCE) in cultured human lymphocytes. None of them was mutagenic in Salmonella typhimurium (reversion of the his − strains TA98, TA100 and TA104). The limit of detection was 1 20,000 to 1 10 6 of the activity of the positive control, benzo[ a ]pyrene 4,5-oxide, depending on the compound and the bacterial strain. Trans -β-methy…

Collective and self diffusion of PS microgels in solution as observed by thermal diffusion forced Rayleigh scattering

2007

Thermal diffusion in solutions of polystyrene micro-network spheres (microgels) in toluene has been studied by the holographic scattering technique of thermal diffusion forced Rayleigh scattering (TDFRS) and by photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS). Size distributions of microgels of different crosslink ratios are obtained from TDFRS measurements on dilute solutions at very low q-values around 4000cm−1. At low concentrations a single diffusive mode is observed and the diffusion coefficient increases with concentration. It is attributed to the collective diffusion of the microgels and the solvent. At high concentrations an additional slow mode appears whose diffusion coefficient decreases wi…

1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene diffusion in polystyrene solutions

1996

Self-diffusion coefficients of 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene (TIB) in binary solutions with polystyrene and ternary mixtures comprised of TIB, toluene, and polystyrene have been measured by static gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (SG-NMR) techniques. These data, as well as mutual-diffusion coefficient data measured by capillary column inverse gas chromatography (CCIGC), have been analyzed here with the Vrentas-Duda free-volume diffusion model. Although both binary and ternary diffusion coefficient data can be accurately correlated with the model, the results contradict those of an earlier investigation, which suggested that TIB diffuses as a single unit in polystyrene solutions. The new data…

Effect of the construction process on the performances of asphalt paving mixes with crumb rubber from scrap tires

2004

This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the use of CRM (Crumb Rubber Modifier) in bituminous mixtures for asphalt pavements, using a Dry Process. Employing experimental methods capable of ensuring that the mixtures obtained and the stress conditions that they undergo in pavements are representative, we clarify some aspects relating to the design and production of mixtures; we also show the effects of the bitumen-rubber interaction on mechanical performances (fatigue resistance and rutting). Among the various factors involved in manufacture, a particular investigation was carried out on the effects of asphalt content, mixing temperatures and mixture compaction. The experi…

Rheological studies of moderately concentrated polystyrene solutions. I. A new method for the extrapolation of the zero-shear viscosity

1983

Measurements of the viscosity coefficient η of solutions of polystyrene (Mw = 6.0 × 105 and 1.77 × 106) in trans-decalin (TD, θ solvent) and toluene (TL, good solvent) as function of shear rate (11−104 s−1), concentration (4.24−11.21 wt %), and temperature (10–50°C) are reported. As a new theoretically grounded method for the determination of the zero-shear viscosity η0 it is proposed to plot η as a function of . The intercepts of the straight lines obtained by this procedure give η0 in good agreement with directly measured values.

Survey of the mean pressure exerted by a wide range of tractors on the soil

2010

In order to predict the mean pressure exerted by a vehicle tyre on the soil, in 1984 Plackett suggested measuring the contact area of a tyre on a hard surface. The model proposed by Hallonborg in 1996, based on the “super ellipse theory”, provided the best results in terms of prediction of the tyre-soil contact area. In this study 82 4WD tractors with different power, mass and age of manufacture were surveyed. Relying on their technical features, the contact area of the front and rear tyres of each tractor and, therefore, their pressure on the soil was calculated, in order to assess the attention paid by manufacturers to soil compaction. The results of this survey showed that the mean press…

Improvement of the photo-stability of polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-polystyrene through carbon nanotubes

2015

Abstract The photo-stability of Polystyrene-Polybutadiene-Polystyrene (SBS) based nanocomposites containing bare multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanotubes bearing carboxylic functional groups (CNTs-COOH) in comparison to that of pristine SBS has been studied. The photo-oxidation of pristine SBS occurs through crosslinking reactions and oxidized species formation and both these processes begin at early stage of exposure. The formation of crosslinking, formerly in polybutadiene phase, assessed by spectroscopical (FTIR), mechanical, dynamic mechanical and rheological analysis, leads to occurrence of internal mechanical stresses in the solid state and the SBS samples become prem…
