Isobaric Vapor−Liquid Equilibria for the Binary Mixtures of Styrene with Ethylbenzene, o-Xylene, m-Xylene, and p-Xylene
2006
Consistent vapor−liquid equilibria (VLE) data have been determined at (5 and 15) kPa for the binary systems styrene + ethylbenzene, + o-xylene, + m-xylene, and + p-xylene in the temperature range (324 to 359) K. The binary systems exhibit very slight deviations from ideal behavior, and no azeotrope is present. The VLE data were well-correlated by the Wilson, NRTL, and UNIQUAC equations.
Thermal conductivity measurement of insulating innovative building materials by hot plate and heat flow meter devices: A Round Robin Test
2019
Abstract The characterization of thermal insulation properties of construction materials represents a fundamental step on the building insulation assessment. In recent years innovative materials have been introduced in the market to fulfill the continuously growing requirements of energy saving and sustainability, and their performance is not so reliable and mature as it happens for traditional insulators. The work presents a Round Robin Test realised among six European laboratories hosting hot plates devices to measure the thermal conductivity of four different materials: aerogel, vacuum insulation panels, polystyrene and birch wood fibre insulation boards. After the definition of the comm…
Innovative Vehicle-Trailer Connection for Yaw Stability Improvement
2014
As well known, dangerous conditions may occur for the lateral stability of the road vehicles on increasing the running velocity. While it is easy to make up for this drawback in the case of a vehicle alone, by a proper weight distribution, the unstable trend may worsen unfavourably for the vehicle-trailer configuration, imposing a very hard correction task to the driver, who has to cope with the development of two types of instability, exponentially divergent or swaying with increasing amplitude. The critical velocity depends on the geometrical and inertial characteristics of the car-trailer system, on the cornering stiffness of the tires and on the weight distribution among the axles. The …
Air monitoring of selected volatile organic compounds in wineries using passive sampling and headspace-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry
2014
Abstract Volatile compounds released during the production of wine at different steps of the winemaking process were evaluated using semipermeable membranes based passive samplers. Preliminary data on the differences between five wine varieties were provided together with the indoor quality of air to which winery workers are exposed during their professional activity. A simple, green and fast analytical methodology was employed for the direct analysis of deployed samplers by using head space (HS) gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) without any sample pre-treatment and avoiding the use of solvents. Terpenes as styrene, pinene, p-cymene and limonene were found at concentration levels…
Gelchromatographische refraktionierung, molekulargewichtsabhängigkeit der axialen dispersionsfunktion
1979
The knowledge of axial dispersion is necessary for the determination of molecular weight distributions from gel permeation chromatograms. This work deals with the determination of the axial dispersion function and its dependence on the molecular weight using refractionation method. The results of a number of fractionated and unfractionated samples of polystyrene reveal that peak dispersion in GPC arises mainly from diffusion in the stationary phase on the basis of the theoretical expression proposed by Kubin.
Über die möglichkeiten zur bestimmung von mischungsenthalpien und -volumina aus der molekulargewichtsabhängigkeit der kritischen entmischungstemperat…
1977
Cloud-point curves and critical curves (Tc = f(p)) have been measured for the system trans-decahydronaphthalene/polystyrene and three different molecular weights of the polystyrene component (2,5 · 106; 3,9 · 105; 1,1 · 105). It turned out that by variation of the pressure the metastable region can be investigated up to the spinodal curve. A comparison of the theta-temperatures and the enthalpy contributions χH (to the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter χ) resulting from the measured critical temperatures according to Shultz-Flory, with the corresponding directly obtained literature data, demonstrates that, although the extrapolation of Tc to infinite molecular weight is feasible, χH obtai…
Polystyrene nanoparticle-templated hollow titania nanosphere monolayers as ordered scaffolds
2018
We report a novel multi-step method for the preparation of ordered mesoporous titania scaffolds and show an illustrative example of their application to solar cells. The method is based on (monolayer) colloidal nanosphere lithography that makes use of polystyrene nanoparticles organised at a water–air interface and subsequently transferred onto a solid substrate. A titania precursor solution (titanium(IV) isopropoxide in ethanol) is then drop-cast onto the monolayer and left to “incubate” overnight. Surprisingly, instead of the expected inverse monolayer-structure, a subsequent calcination step of the precursor yields an ordered monolayer of hollow titania nanospheres with a wall thickness …
Effect of culture parameters on the production of styrene (vinyl benzene) and 1-octene-3-ol by Penicillium caseicolum
1992
SummaryPenicillium caseicolum has been shown to completely synthesize styrene. A medium was developed to test the capacity of different strains for this synthesis. In a synthetic medium, styrene production began only after the glucose was entirely consumed. This production depended on storage temperature and occurred simultaneously with 1-octene-3-ol formation.
Rbt1 Protein Domains Analysis in Candida albicans Brings Insights into Hyphal Surface Modifications and Rbt1 Potential Role during Adhesion and Biofi…
2013
Cell wall proteins are central to the virulence of Candida albicans. Hwp1, Hwp2 and Rbt1 form a family of hypha-associated cell surface proteins. Hwp1 and Hwp2 have been involved in adhesion and other virulence traits but Rbt1 is still poorly characterized. To assess the role of Rbt1 in the interaction of C. albicans with biotic and abiotic surfaces independently of its morphological state, heterologous expression and promoter swap strategies were applied. The N-terminal domain with features typical of the Flo11 superfamily was found to be essential for adhesiveness to polystyrene through an increase in cell surface hydrophobicity. A 42 amino acid-long domain localized in the central part o…
