Substrat i superstrat en l'evolució del català
1999
Reflections on the significance of substratum and superstratum in the genesis and evolution of Catalan. The author considers how the recourse to the pre-Roman susbtratum in the etymological interpretation or in the historical and critical grammar has been carried to excess both by those absolutely against it and by those who take it as an all-explaining panacea. He also points out that, conversely to the interest in substratum, the Germanic superstratum has not received the attention it deserves in the genesis of Catalan because of various prejudices, some of them of an ideological kind.
Distribució sintàctica de parer, aparer i apparer en català antic (segles XIII-XVII)
2013
This paper provides a systematic and comprehensive study of the syntactic tendency in verbs 'parer', 'aparer' and 'apparer' which became polysemic verbs in Old Catalan ('to seem') and are usually considered synonyms. The paper questions whether they are really synonyms in all syntactical contexts. The study is based in a data corpus from the 13th to the 17th century.
El verb modal deure al segle XIX: modalitat deòntica, evidencialitat inferencial, (inter)subjectivitat i mirativitat
2018
This paper presents a study of the modal construction with the verb deure ('must') in the 19th century, based on two corpora (CIGCM and CTILC). In this century, the modal deure consolidates the inferential evidential value, which had already emerged in Old Catalan (Sentí 2017), and developed maximum subjective values compared with other Romance languages (generic inference and conjecture, cf. Squartini 2008). New pragmatic uses are observed (interrogative sentences) and new intersubjective (Traugott 2003) and mirative uses are discussed. We also analyze the values of necessity that still survive, following Nuyts' (2005) proposal: deontic and dynamic modality and a directive value. Keywords:…
Les Oracions de relatiu i la represa pronominal amb en
2014
This paper deals with relative clauses that include a resumptive en clitic. Specifically, it deals with relative clauses that have a partitive implicit antecedent. In other words, it is concerned with the type of construction in which the antecedent appears without a nominal nucleus and is headed by a quantifier. This kind of construction has not received much attention from scholars and it has only been dealt with in a very shallow manner and with a range of diverging opinions from the point of view of normative grammar. This research goes into the issue in greater depth by analysing hesitating uses and the tendencies according to the syntactic features of the construction. It is based on …
Pardines i l'orige de la llengua valenciana
2018
The idea that all the bearers of the …

Comparison of central venous catheterization with and without ultrasound guide
2003
Purpose: To compare the effectiveness, safety and time needed to perform central venous catheterization (CVC) in the presence or absence of an ultrasound (US) guide. Methods: Between January 1999 and February 2002 we performed CVCs in 196 patients: 105 patients received US guided CVC (group I) and 91 patients had CVC without US guide (group II). Results: The average time to perform CVC was shorter with US guide (4 vs 7min). The utilization of the US guide was also associated with improved success (98.09% vs 91.2%, p < 0.025) and lack of major complications (0% vs 9.8%, p < 0.001). Conclusions: US-guided CVC affords an easier, safer and more rapid cannulation of a central vein. It is especia…

An affordable method to obtain cultured endothelial cells from peripheral blood
2013
The culture of endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) provides an excellent tool to research on EPC biology and vascular regeneration and vasculogenesis. The use of different protocols to obtain EPC cultures makes it difficult to obtain comparable results in different groups. This work offers a systematic comparison of the main variables of most commonly used protocols for EPC isolation, culture and functional evaluation. Peripheral blood samples from healthy individuals were recovered and mononuclear cells were cultured. Different recovery and culture conditions were tested: blood volume, blood anticoagulant, coating matrix and percentage of foetal bovine serum (FBS) in culture media. The succ…
