The Bile Acid Receptor GPBAR-1 (TGR5) Modulates Integrity of Intestinal Barrier and Immune Response to Experimental Colitis

2011

Background GP-BAR1, a member G protein coupled receptor superfamily, is a cell surface bile acid-activated receptor highly expressed in the ileum and colon. In monocytes, ligation of GP-BAR1 by secondary bile acids results in a cAMP-dependent attenuation of cytokine generation. Aims To investigate the role GP-BAR1 in regulating intestinal homeostasis and inflammation-driven immune dysfunction in rodent models of colitis. Methods Colitis was induced in wild type and GP-BAR1−/− mice by DSS and TNBS administration. Potential GP-BAR1 agonists were identified by in silico screening and computational docking studies. Results GP-BAR1−/− mice develop an abnormal morphology of colonic mucous cells a…

The Lung in Inflammatory Bowel Disease†

1993

Respiratory involvement in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been reported mainly since 1976. This form of involvement should clearly be separated from interstitial lung disease due to sulfasalazine or mesalamine, although the distinction may be difficult in some cases. We report the data of an ongoing Registry containing 33 cases (23 cases receiving no drug therapy) with ulcerative colitis or, less often, Crohn's disease, who developed varied bronchopulmonary problems. In several cases, the exact diagnosis and the relation of the bronchopulmonary disease to IBD had not been established for many years, thus delaying effective treatment with steroids. In most cases (28/33), …

Solitary Rectal Ulcer

1979

Solitary ulcers of the rectum may be traumatic in origin and caused by thermometers, occasionally by digital removal of a fecal impaction, or by deviate sexual behavior. Solitary rectal ulcers may also be a manifestation of Crohn’s disease. Very rarely, ectopic gastric mucosa is their cause. For the vast majority of solitary rectal ulcers, the explanation remains unknown. Occasionally, the ulcers are accompanied by localized inflammation of the mucosa within the distal segment of the rectum with edema, erythema, and circumscribed whitish flecks in a thickened bowel wall covered by excessive secretions. The changes are found predominantly in the ventral portion of the rectum, and in contrast…

Fistulae (Rectovaginal, Rectovesical)

1979

The clinical manifestations of a fistula — stool from the vagina, air from the urethra — are often difficult to recognize because the fistulous opening is hidden by the edematous and swollen mucosa. Larger defects occur particularly after radiation therapy and with Crohn’s disease.

Pain reduction by dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane allograft in nondiabetic leg ulcers might be an early indicator of good response: A case s…

2020

Dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane allograft (dHACM) derived from placenta is increasingly used for skin and soft tissue repair in several medical specialties. Promising effects of dHACM were also reported in chronic venous and diabetic leg ulcers. However, dHACM is cost-intensive and its effect on chronic leg ulcers of other etiologies and pain reduction is unknown. Clinical predictors of a favorable response to dHACM during the early treatment period could help to limit unnecessary costs. In our case series with six patients suffering from chronic lower leg ulcers of various etiology, the effect of dHACM once per week on reduction of pain and wound size during a 5-week period was ex…

Mucosal immunology and probiotics.

2013

The cross-talk between the mucosa-associated immune system and microbiota is critical in mucosal tissue homeostasis as well as in protection against infectious and inflammatory diseases occurring at mucosal sites. This recent evidence has paved the way to therapeutic approaches aimed at modulating the mucosa-associated immune system using probiotics. Different strains of probiotics possess the ability to finely regulate dendritic cell (DC) activation, polarizing the subsequent T cell activity toward Th1 (e.g. Lactobacillus (Lb) acidophilus), Th2 (Lb.reuteri and Bifidobacterium bifidum) or, as more recently demonstrated, Th17 responses induced by specific strains such as Lb.rhamnosus GG and …

Light-Tissue Interaction Model for the Analysis of Skin Ulcer Multi-spectral Images

2017

International audience; Skin ulcers (SU) are ones of the most frequent causes of consultation in primary health-care units (PHU) in tropical areas. However, the lack of specialized physicians in those areas, leads to improper diagnosis and management of the patients. There is then a need to develop tools that allow guiding the physicians toward a more accurate diagnosis. Multi-spectral imaging systems are a potential non-invasive tool that could be used in the analysis of skin ulcers. With these systems it is possible to acquire optical images at different wavelengths which can then be processed by means of mathematical models based on optimization approaches. The processing of those kind o…
