Multicenter investigation of 1,036 subjects using a standardized method for the assessment of olfactory function combining tests of odor identificati…

2000

“Sniffin’ Sticks” is a test of nasal chemosensory performance that is based on penlike odor-dispensing devices. It is comprised of three tests of olfactory function: tests for odor threshold, discrimination and identification. Previous work has already established its test-retest reliability and validity in comparison to established measures of olfactory sensitivity. The results of this test are presented as a composite TDI score – i.e., the sum of results obtained for threshold, discrimination and identification measures. The present multicenter investigation aimed at providing normative values in relation to different age groups. To this end, 966 patients were investigated in 11 centers. …

Digital protocol for creating a virtual gingiva adjacent to teeth with subgingival dental preparations.

2019

Abstract Purpose This article describes a digital technique used to record gingival emergence profiles modeled for the prosthetic restoration of teeth prepared using biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT). Materials and methods The description of the technique of intraoral recording, manipulation of digital files, and chairside protocol of prosthetic restorations is developed in the present manuscript on two anterior teeth treated with vertical and subgingival dental preparations for restoration with ceramic crowns. The manipulation of the digital files registered with an intraoral scanner with software that allows its alignment (best-fit) and the performance boolean of operatio…

Facial analysis using a new clinical device: The Kattan Facio-meter.

2018

Background The aim of the study was to attempt to set average faciometric standards for Egyptians using the Kattan Facio-meter. Material and Methods The sample consisted of 180 faculty students with age range 17-25 years. It was divided into three groups; Angle Class I, II and III. Class II was further subdivided into divisions 1 and 2. Linear and angular facial measurements in relation to K plane were taken using the Kattan facio-meter. The measurements were correlated to Angle's classification and between genders. Results On comparing the different classes, Class II division 1 showed the statistically highest mean value for Orbitale-soft tissue A; p=0.042, Class II divisions 1 and 2 for O…

A New Technique for Coronaplasty in Penile Reconstruction.

2018

Abstract Background The coronaplasty is an important step of the phalloplasty procedure as it creates a prominent coronal ridge and a constricted coronal sulcus, resulting in the transformation of a regular skin flap into a flap resembling a circumcised penis. Aim The aim of this article is to describe our new coronaplasty technique that exploits opposing contracting forces of 2 different skin grafts to hold the shape of a thick, distally based skin flap, resulting in a natural looking neo-phallus. Methods A distally based flap is raised at the junction of the middle and distal thirds of the neo-phallus. The dissection continues until adequate mobilization is obtained, so the flap can stand…

Rollvection versus linearvection: Comparison of brain activations in PET

2004

We conducted a PET study to directly compare the differential effects of visual motion stimulation that induced either rollvection about the line of sight or forward linearvection along this axis in the same subjects. The main question was, whether the areas that respond to vection are identical or separate and distinct for rollvection and linearvection. Eleven healthy volunteers were exposed to large-field (100 degrees x 60 degrees ) visual motion stimulation consisting of (1) dots accelerating from a focus of expansion to the edge of the screen (forward linearvection) and (2) dots rotating counterclockwise in the frontal plane (clockwise rollvection). These two stimuli, which induced appa…

Development and Function of the Spiral Canlicular System

1965

The canalicular spiral system derives from the epithelium of the outer spiral sulcus and extends towards the prominence and the spiral ligament. The comparison between the development of the canalicular spiral system and that of other cochlear structures induces the author to con-firm what he suggested in 1949 about the secreting modality of the cochlear endolymph.

TMS activation of interhemispheric pathways between the posterior parietal cortex and the contralateral motor cortex

2009

Using a twin coil transcranial magnetic stimulation (tc-TMS) approach we have previously demonstrated that facilitation may be detected in the primary motor cortex (M1) following stimulation over the ipsilateral caudal intraparietal sulcus (cIPS). Here we tested the interhemispheric interactions between the IPS and the contralateral motor cortex (M1). We found that conditioning the right cIPS facilitated contralateral M1 when the conditioning stimulus had an intensity of 90% resting motor threshold (RMT) but not at 70% or 110% RMT. Facilitation was maximal when the interstimulus interval (ISI) between cIPS and M1 was 6 or 12 ms. These facilitatory effects were mediated by interactions with …

The use of video-assisted thoracic surgery in the management of Pancoast tumours

2010

We describe our experience using video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) as an adjunct to the surgical management of Pancoast tumors. Between March 2004 and November 2009, 13 patients with Pancoast tumors were included in this study. Surgery was performed by positioning the patient to allow either an anterior or a posterior thoracotomy. VATS was employed to explore the pleural cavity, to optimize the surgical access and as an assistance during surgical resection. Three patients with pleural carcinosis at thoracoscopy did not undergo further surgery. Seven lobectomies and three wedge resections were performed with an en bloc chest-wall resection and mediastinal lymphadenectomy. The surgical a…

A comparative analysis of Pancoast tumour resection performed via video-assisted thoracic surgery versus standard open approaches.

2014

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present paper was to conduct a comparative analysis of outcomes after thoracoscopic resection versus standard thoracotomy approach in the treatment of Pancoast tumours. METHODS: All consecutive patients with Pancoast tumours undergoing surgical treatment from March 2000 to November 2012 were enrolled. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to whether a thoracoscopic or standard thoracotomy approach was adopted. In addition to morbidity and mortality, (i) intensity of pain; (ii) respiratory function focusing on the postoperative value and its variation with respect to the predicted value (Delta); (iii) analgesic consumption at different times during the post…

Pancoast tumour: current therapeutic options

2019

Pancoast's syndrome is caused by malignant neoplasm of superior sulcus of the lung which produces destructive lesions of thoracic inlet and comes along with the involvement of brachial plexus and stellate ganglion. Computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans can detect early lesions otherwise missed by routine radiographs and can also define the local extent or metastatic progression of the disease. Protocols involving combinations of irradiation, chemotherapy, and surgery are currently being under investigation to determine the best management. This work reviewed the current diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to Pancoast's tumors.Patients with lung superior sulcus …
