Combination vaccines containing DTPa–Hib: impact of IPV and coadministration of CRM197 conjugates

2008

Vaccination with diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTPa)-Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) combinations generally elicits anti-polyribosyl-ribitol-phosphate (PRP) antibody concentrations of more than 0.15 microg/ml, a criterion that is linked to the protection of infants against Hib disease. In the UK, vaccination with DTPa3-Hib elicited atypically low anti-PRP antibody levels and was associated with breakthrough Hib cases. While the absence of a toddler booster is considered to be a key factor explaining the lowered control of Hib disease, we propose that the coadministration of serogroup C Neisseria meningitidis conjugate vaccine (MenC)-CRM197, which coincided with the introductio…

"It is time for the British people to have their say" : The Daily Mail and the Guardian on Brexit from 2013 to 2016

2017

Yhdistyneiden kuningaskuntien kansanäänestys Euroopan Unionista lähtemiseksi kesäkuussa 2016 oli monella tavalla järisyttävä, jopa odottamaton, tapahtuma. Yleisenä oletuksena oli, että vuoden 1975 kansanäänestyksen tulos toistuisi ja Yhdistyneet kuningaskunnat pysyisivät edelleen Euroopan Unionin jäsenmaana maassa pitkään vallinneesta euroskeptisyydestä huolimatta. Tämän tutkielman tarkoitus on tarkastella, miten Brexitin keskustelluimmat teemat kuten maahanmuutto, talous ja identiteetti kehittyivät vuosina 2013-2016 lehdissä the Daily Mail ja the Guardian sekä miten nämä teemat vaikuttivat Brexitin kokonaiskuvaan lehdissä. Tarkastelun kohteena on myös, miten nämä lehdet vaikuttivat lukijoi…

Zarządzanie wartościami w zachodniej hemisferze na przykładzie libertariańskiego modelu sprawiedliwości

2018

We Had to Feed the People: The Italian Lira and the Political Economy of Currency in British Eritrea, 1941–1950

2021

Following the occupation of Eritrea in 1941, British authorities in London promoted a currency policy aimed at replacing the Italian lira with a sterling-based currency basket. In May 1942, they opted for the enforcement of the East African shilling as the new legal tender. The lire, however, did not disappear overnight. Their circulation was tolerated—and, in some cases, even encouraged—by British authorities in Asmara, which exploited the small deal of autonomy they enjoyed from London to adapt the new monetary system to the needs of local governance. The case study is a useful lens to analyse the multiplicity of interests that shaped the political economy of currency of the United Kingdo…

Biopiracy in India: Seed diversity and the scramble for knowledge.

2018

Abstract Background: Biopiracy has usually been discussed mostly in the context of the life sciences, sometimes in dialogue with legal debates or political implications. This paper provides a humanities perspective on contemporary discussions of biopiracy and biopatenting. Hypothesis It proceeds from the hypothesis that contemporary debates and practices of biopiracy can be understood as harking back to colonial legacies, which systematically disregard “native” knowledge or seek to appropriate it for their own purposes. Results Drawing on the work of Vandana Shiva, the present article seeks to redefine the notion of ownership of knowledge from a cultural studies perspective. Exploring the 2…

Calculating confidence intervals for impact numbers

2006

Abstract Background Standard effect measures such as risk difference and attributable risk are frequently used in epidemiological studies and public health research to describe the effect of exposures. Recently, so-called impact numbers have been proposed, which express the population impact of exposures in form of specific person or case numbers. To describe estimation uncertainty, it is necessary to calculate confidence intervals for these new effect measures. In this paper, we present methods to calculate confidence intervals for the new impact numbers in the situation of cohort studies. Methods Beside the exposure impact number (EIN), which is equivalent to the well-known number needed …

Optimised versus standard dosing of vancomycin in infants with Gram-positive sepsis (NeoVanc): a multicentre, randomised, open-label, phase 2b, non-i…

2022

Summary Background Vancomycin is the most widely used antibiotic for neonatal Gram-positive sepsis, but clinical outcome data of dosing strategies are scarce. The NeoVanc programme comprised extensive preclinical studies to inform a randomised controlled trial to assess optimised vancomycin dosing. We compared the efficacy of an optimised regimen to a standard regimen in infants with late onset sepsis that was known or suspected to be caused by Gram-positive microorganisms. Methods NeoVanc was an open-label, multicentre, phase 2b, parallel-group, randomised, non-inferiority trial comparing the efficacy and toxicity of an optimised regimen of vancomycin to a standard regimen in infants aged …

Development of healthy eating habits early in life. Review of recent evidence and selected guidelines

2011

Encouraging healthy eating habit development early in life is a way to prevent the onset of diet-related diseases. This review focuses on the period ranging from the beginning of complementary feeding until the age of 3 years. Its first objective was to review relevant themes in the most recent literature on the development of healthy eating habits in this period. Its second objective was to evaluate to what extent international and national feeding guidelines cover these themes. Analysed guidelines included WHO, European Network for Public Health Nutrition, US and two European national guidelines (UK and France). They were evaluated using a 4-pt scale and compared. Well-covered themes in c…

Piłsudczycy w Wielkiej Brytanii wobec władz RP w okresie II wojny światowej w świetle „Listów z Londynu” (1942–1945)

2021
