The Principles of universal design for learning implementation in design study process

2015

Problem Statement: Starting their studies students have different level of perception and understanding. There is a need for an instructional framework that would allow educational programming, inclusive for all students.Research Questions: What is diversity of students learning strategies how can be facilitated students perception ability, expression and cooperation skills?Purpose of the Study: Objective of the current study is to investigate pedagogical possibilities to promote design students perception abilities and reasoning skills using in learning process principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in context of student’s diversity.Research Methods: In start up phase students w…

Capabilities and Affordances of Virtual Worlds for People with Lifelong Disability

2013

Using technology is of great value for people with lifelong disability (PWLD). The Internet can help PWLD to be more independent, to be socially active, and to participate in a range of activities. Virtual worlds (VWs) offer an environment with technology capabilities for interaction, rendering, and communication. The ability to take advantage of these capabilities may depend on the technology and the ability of the person utilizing it. Using a qualitative study we aimed to explore the differences of ability required to use these capabilities and make capabilities into affordances for PWLD. We found there were differences in PWLD’s ability to utilize the capabilities offered and conclude th…

Museums as Disseminators of Niche Knowledge

2019

Accessibility has been facing several challenges within Audiovisual Translation Studies and has also gained great opportunities for its establishment as a methodologically and theoretically well-founded discipline. Audiovisual translation modes have achieved a crucial role in the transmission of what scholarly studies have discussed in relation to media accessibility as a set of services and practices providing access to audiovisual media content for persons with sensory impairment. Today accessibility has become a concept involving more and more universality, since it is extensively contributing to the dissemination of audiovisual and visual products about issues on minorities, and also ad…

Technology in mental health

2008

Mental illness has been identified as one of the greatest challenges facing society in the coming decades. However, there are significant barriers to access for many people suffering from mental illness, including overburdened public health care systems, geographic distance from point of care, difficulties encountered by individuals in engaging with services, and the stigma associated with mental illness. Technology has the potential to significantly improve access, engagement, effectiveness and affordability of treatment, yet relatively little use has been made of technology to date. Significant opportunities exist for further research and development, but the domain throws up a variety of…

Astronomical Activities with Disabled People

2010

With this contribution we would like to share our experiences in organizing astronomical activities addressed to people with disabilities. The goal is twofold: we would like to invite all those with similar experiences to contribute to the compilation of a document to guide other astronomers who might be interested in carrying out these kind of activities aimed at groups of people with special needs. We also want to persuade public outreach officers that working with disabled people is not as difficult as it may seem at first, as long as they are provided with adequate educational material and guidelines about how to do it. The final goal is to build a repository that can be used by educato…

Universal Design of ICT for Emergency Management

2018

The primary objectives of this article are to give a systematic overview of the current state of the emerging research field of Universal Design of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for Emergency Management, and to highlight high-impact research opportunities to ensure that the increasing introduction of ICT in Emergency Management can contribute to removing barriers instead of adding more barriers, in particular for the elderly and people with disabilities. A systematic review on various literature with respect to Universal Design, ICT and Emergency Management between 2008 to 2018 was employed in this study, and reviewed systematically using a predefined framework. The ultimat…

Instrument Validation to Measure Teachers' Perceptions of Universal Design for Learning

2019

Business Models and Economic Approaches for Recovering Energy from Wastewater and Fecal Sludge

2015

Universal access to water, sanitation and energy services are key challenges in low income countries. The conventional model of providing water, sanitation and waste disposal as a social service is no longer viable because national authorities lack financial and human resources for operation and maintenance and for addressing the sanitation needs locally. Human excreta and wastewater represent resources that can be used to generate new income and support livelihoods through use as a source of energy. The reduction, removal and reuse of wastes must become financially feasible and economically profitable and yield high returns. This requires innovative and sustainable business models and fina…

Understanding Situational Disabilities and Situational Awareness in Disasters

2019

In this paper, a scenario-based approach augmented with personas typically used in universal design and interactive design domains is used to illustrate the occurrence of situational disabilities in emergency situations, and to show how environmental factors can trigger these situational disabilities. With the help of personas representing selected archetypical characteristics and roles, the scenarios are further examined to show how these situational disabilities can affect the situational awareness of different stakeholders, not only in the command and control centers, but also first responders in the field as well as affected members of the public. This approach provides a better underst…
