Despite the fact that fake degrees have been used since the creation of legitimate diplomas, the fake degrees business is reaching epidemic proportions, notably because of globalization, new information and communication technologies and “diploma race”. We define the concept of fake degrees and distinguish different kinds of fakes. We also indicate the main functions of diplomas in the economic literature. Intellectual Capital and its Relationship with Universities

Abstract The Intellectual Capital of a firm is the sum total of its Human Capital, Structural Capital and Relational Capital. These assets form a source of distinct competitive advantage and distinguish the performance of one firm from the other. Some organizations appear to continue relying on traditional resources for wealth creation but they should increase their attention towards a greater reliance on intellectual capital factors. This study attempts to investigate the role of intellectual capital in nowadays modern organizations and in particular, its relevance for education institutions such as universities.

Self-reported dependence on mobile phones in young adults: A European cross-cultural empirical survey

Gender differences in career advancements in Italian universities over the last 20 years

This article deals with gender differences in Italian universities in the last 20 years in terms of career advancements. Data are taken from the MUR (Ministry of University and Research) archive. In Italy, career advancements are still much easier for men, even if the gender gap has slowly narrowed in the last decades. The novelty of this paper is the analysis through event-history analysis models on the time elapsed to receive a promotion (from assistant to associate professor and from associate to full professor).
