The goal of this thesis is to show, through the history of the Hungarian minority in Romania, what drives the self-organisation of a minority community, and to what degree, in what respect is this historical, social phenomenon specific. Beside the theoretical introduction, the thesis consists of eight chapters, organised into three larger blocks. I denna artikel granskas de språkliga rättigheterna hos två invandrade gruppers ättlingar med samma härkomst ur deras eget perspektiv. Artikeln visar hur vuxna med ungersk bakgrund i Finland och Sverige beskriver sina egna erfarenheter och känslor när det gäller minoritetsspråkets, ungerskans, användning i dessa två länder. Artikelns material är hämtat ur en jämförande språksociologisk avhandling, baserad på en enkätundersökning och djupintervjuer med 38 informanter från Finland och 50 från Sverige. Undersökningens material visar att det ungerska språket har ett affektivt värde hos många informanter och positiva minnen och känslor förknippas med ungerskan när man hör eller använder språket.…

The language policy of the European Union has the goal that every citizen will be bilingual and everybody will be able to communicate in two diQ erent languages besides one’s mother tongue. The aim of this article is to investigate the conditions for reaching these goals among people with immigrant backgrounds. The article provides an overview of bilingualism among one group of adults with Hungarian background in Finland. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan maahanmuuton kielikysymyksiä Unkarista Suomeen ja Ruotsiin työllistyneiden terveydenhuollon ammattilaisten näkökulmasta. Neksusanalyyttisessä viitekehyksessä tutkitaan sitä investointia, jonka nämä työntekijät tekevät oppiakseen uutta, työssä tarvitsemaansa kieltä eli suomea tai ruotsia. Tutkimusasetelma on pitkittäinen, ja analyysi perustuu terveydenhuollon ammattilaisten sekä muutamien kielikoulutuksesta ja rekrytoinnista vastaavien henkilöiden haastatteluihin. Language ideologies in the Romanian Banat : analysis of interviews and academic writings among the Hungarians and Germans

This is an introduction to a compilation of six articles on language ideologies in the Romanian Banat. My dissertation was initiated by fieldwork in the area, resulting to a database of interviews among the Hungarian and German inhabitants. This data is compared to intellectual writings. With regards to researcher position, I identify myself as a traveler in the area and as a foreign scholar.
