Unsupervised change detection with kernels

2012

In this paper an unsupervised approach to change detection relying on kernels is introduced. Kernel based clustering is used to partition a selected subset of pixels representing both changed and unchanged areas. Once the optimal clustering is obtained the estimated representatives (centroids) of each group are used to assign the class membership to all others pixels composing the multitemporal scenes. Different approaches of considering the multitemporal information are considered with accent on the computation of the difference image directly in the feature spaces. For this purpose a difference kernel approach is successfully adopted. Finally an effective way to cope with the estimation o…

Aging in a free-energy landscape model for glassy relaxation. II. Fluctuation-dissipation relations.

2006

Several fluctuation-dissipation relations are investigated for a simple free-energy landscape model designed to describe the primary relaxation in supercooled liquids. The calculations of the response and of the correlation functions are performed for a quench from a high temperature to a low temperature. In the model, all dynamical quantities reach equilibrium after long times, but for times shorter than the re-equilibration time they do not exhibit time-translational invariance and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem is violated. Two measures for these violations are considered. One such measure is given by the slope in a plot of the integrated response versus the correlation function and…

A mathematical description accounting for the superfluous hydrogen evolution and the inductive behaviour observed during electrochemical measurements…

2018

When electrochemical techniques are used to probe the surface of corroding magnesium with the aim of obtaining quantitative information on the corrosion process, two peculiarities are generally observed: i) with anodic polarization, the rate of hydrogen evolution increases instead of decreasing and ii) during electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, an inductive contribution is often observed at the low-frequency end of the spectra. The presence of these two phenomena clearly has an impact on the methodology that should be applied to correctly estimate corrosion rates from electrochemical data. The aim of this work is to provide a general mathematical description of the corrodin…

Affari e complicità mafiose tra Palermo e Punta Raisi

2014

Neutral hydrogen in galaxy clusters: impact of AGN feedback and implications for intensity mapping

2015

By means of zoom-in hydrodynamic simulations we quantify the amount of neutral hydrogen (HI) hosted by groups and clusters of galaxies. Our simulations, which are based on an improved formulation of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), include radiative cooling, star formation, metal enrichment and supernova feedback, and can be split in two different groups, depending on whether feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is turned on or off. Simulations are analyzed to account for HI self-shielding and the presence of molecular hydrogen. We find that the mass in neutral hydrogen of dark matter halos monotonically increases with the halo mass and can be well described by a power-law of th…

Scheduling in Targeted Transient Surveys and a New Telescope for CHASE

2010

We present a method for scheduling observations in small field-of-view transient targeted surveys. The method is based on maximizing the probability of detection of transient events of a given type and age since occurrence; it requires knowledge of the time since the last observation for every observed field, the expected light curve of the event, and the expected rate of events in the fields where the search is performed. In order to test this scheduling strategy we use a modified version of the genetic scheduler developed for the telescope control system RTS2. In particular, we present example schedules designed for a future 50 cm telescope that will expand the capabilities of the CHASE s…

Black Hole Shadow Drift and Photon Ring Frequency Drift

2021

The apparent angular size of the shadow of a black hole in an expanding Universe is redshift-dependent. Since cosmological redshifts change with time - known as the redshift drift - all redshift-dependent quantities acquire a time-dependence, and a fortiori so do black hole shadows. We find a mathematical description of the black hole shadow drift and show that the amplitude of this effect is of order $10^{-16}$ per day for M87$^{\star}$. While this effect is small, we argue that its non-detection can be used to constrain the accretion rate around supermassive black holes, as well as a novel probe of the equivalence principle. If general relativity is assumed, we infer from the data obtaine…

The transient gravitational-wave sky

2013

Interferometric detectors will very soon give us an unprecedented view of the gravitational-wave sky, and in particular of the explosive and transient Universe. Now is the time to challenge our theoretical understanding of short-duration gravitational-wave signatures from cataclysmic events, their connection to more traditional electromagnetic and particle astrophysics, and the data analysis techniques that will make the observations a reality. This paper summarizes the state of the art, future science opportunities, and current challenges in understanding gravitational-wave transients.

In the realm of the Hubble tension—a review of solutions

2021

The $\Lambda$CDM model provides a good fit to a large span of cosmological data but harbors areas of phenomenology. With the improvement of the number and the accuracy of observations, discrepancies among key cosmological parameters of the model have emerged. The most statistically significant tension is the $4-6\sigma$ disagreement between predictions of the Hubble constant $H_0$ by early time probes with $\Lambda$CDM model, and a number of late time, model-independent determinations of $H_0$ from local measurements of distances and redshifts. The high precision and consistency of the data at both ends present strong challenges to the possible solution space and demand a hypothesis with en…

Non-analog decay of 74Rb

2001

The magnitude of the Coulomb mixing parameter δ1 IM has been experimentally deduced, for the first time, for the β decay of 74Rb. The estimated magnitude is derived from the feeding of the non-analog first excited 0+ state in 74Kr. The inferred upper limit of 0.07% is small compared to theoretical predictions. The half-life was measured to be 64.90(9) ms. peerReviewed
