Hybrid Passive Control Strategies for Reducing the Displacements at the Base of Seismic Isolated Structures
2019
In this paper, the use of hybrid passive control strategies to mitigate the seismic response of a base-isolated structure is examined. The control performance of three different types of devices used for reducing base displacements of isolated buildings is investigated. Specifically, the Tuned Mass Damper (TMD), the New Tuned Mass Damper (New TMD) and the Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD), each one associated to a Base Isolated structure (BI), have been considered. The seismic induced vibration control of base-isolated structures equipped with the TMD, New TMD or the TLCD is examined and compared with that of the base-isolated system without devices, using real recorded seismic signals as e…
Distribution and habitat selection of wintering birds in urban environments
1998
Habitat selection of wintering land-birds was studied in 31 human settlements in Finland. A total of 26 wintering bird species representing 5155 individuals were observed. Between-year variation (CVB%) and short-term fluctuation within one winter (CVW%) in species richness (CVB=10% CVW=15%) were low, as were total numbers of birds (CVB=22% CVW=24%) and populations of the most common bird species (CVB=20–40% CVW=15–47%). The most abundant bird species (e.g., Passer domesticus, Parus major and Pica pica) occurred in most of the study sites. The total densities of omnivorous birds, sedentary birds and bird species that commonly use feeding tables were higher in a heavily urbanized areas than i…
Microwave signature for gas sensing: 2005 to present
2015
Abstract We present here the development and the implementation of a technique of gas detection involving a microwave transduction method. The use of low-cost sensors based on microstrip or coplanar structures, adapted to the microwaves domain, allows the sensitive materials deposition under various forms. The purpose of the study is to assess the interest of microwave transduction for gas detection. The choice of the sensitive materials concerns materials widely used in the field of gas sensing: the metal oxides (SnO2 and TiO2) as well as molecular materials like cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc). In this article we shall apply to explain the principles of the microwave transduction before appr…
Leaseholders in Capitalist Arcadia: Bourgeois Hegemony and Peasant Opportunities in the Valencian Countryside during the Nineteenth Century
2006
Scholars tend to interpret the European peasantry's incorporation into mass politics at the beginning of the twentieth century in terms of two equally extreme situations, citing either the peasantry's support for traditional oligarchies, or its anti-capitalist radicalism. By contrast, this article explores how the confluence between a broad network of peasant families and leased agricultural properties in the Valencian region of Spain helped generate mass support for an anti-liberal (and eventually Francoist) legal system. The authors highlight the uniqueness of the social and productive context of Valencian agriculture during the late 1800s and early 1900s, as well as the tensions that exi…
Socio-spatial polarisation and policy response: Perspectives for regional development in the Baltic States
2022
Based on a relational understanding of socio-spatial polarisation as a nested, multidimensional and multi-scalar process, the paper applies a comparative perspective on current trends of socio-spatial development in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Comparing current scholarship and data on demographic and economic processes of centralisation and peripheralisation, we also examine political debates around issues of polarisation in different scholarly national perspectives. Despite variations in national discourses, our comparative perspective conveys strong similarities between the three Baltic countries in terms of socio-economic and demographic concentration in the capital regions to the di…
Urban layout, landscape features and pedestrian usage
2007
ACL; International audience; The analysis of the factors which condition walking in the urban environment is an important issue in urban planning. The present work is based on the hypothesis that the landscape, in its entirety, plays a role in encouraging pedestrian movements. The frequency of pedestrian traffic in the streets is analyzed as a function of accessibility and landscape preferences with the help of a conceptual framework. By defining accessibility as the measurement of the integration of the space syntax, preferences are researched using multiple stepwise regression of visual variables. This method has been applied to an area in the city of Lille (France) where the pedestrian f…
La geografía escolar: deseos institucionales y vivencias de aula
2018
School geography embodies the attempt of political and academic institutions of systematizing geographical content knowledge: to transform geography in a learning object for the population. The purpose of this article is to highlight the existing differences and similarities in the analysis of school geography. On the one hand, we refer to the curricular framework and to the education system. On the other hand, we deal with the inherent problems of geography teaching in childhood, primary and secondary education. In these contexts, geography contents aim to convey the description of the environment to students that tend to distrust canonical academic discourse, as they consider it to be bey…
From top-down urban planning to culturally sensitive planning? Urban renewal and artistic activism in a neo-bohemian district in Barcelona
2020
The city of Barcelona in general and its historic center in particular have undergone a sea change from an industrial city to a global tourism and service center. Some authors argue that urban rene...
Paesaggio, piano, progetto: problemi lessicali e altro
2012
The notion of landscape and the techniques for landscape design must necessarily be based on two principal regulatory provisions, the European Landscape Convention and in Italy the law on cultural heritage and landscape. Consideration must also be given to what is meant by the term ‘landscape' in normal and specialist parlance and to the nature of the training of landscape architects, because it is from all this that the ambiguities and misunderstandings that surround the notion of landscape originate. Consideration must also be given to the relations between planning and real and local transformations, because the contents and procedures for the formulation of designs depend on them. Lands…
