Agrarian development and state building in Spain: the contest for irrigation in the Valencian Region, 1770–1860

2022

AbstractA determined expansion in the productive capacity of Spanish agriculture was a fundamental and contentious objective during the crisis of the country’s ancien régime and the formation of the liberal state, in the years of transition from the eighteenth to the nineteenth centuries. In this study we examine a fundamental reorientation that occurred in an ambitious project for the expansion of irrigation in the region of Valencia. In this region, characterised by a well-rooted commercial agriculture, the original scheme, initiated by an enlightened aristocrat well connected with the royal court, would be profoundly altered in the transition from one political regime to another. The irr…

Some Reflections on the Economic and Political Organisation of Private Neighbourhoods

2005

The spreading of privately organised and often gated neighbourhoods in many regions of the world has triggered a widespread discussion about the relations between social and urban development. This paper presents some reflections on the economic and political organisation of this type of housing. First, the club goods theory is used to explain the potential attractiveness of this form of housing for developers, local governments as well as residents. However, the club goods theory alone does not enable one to understand the global but regionally differentiated development. Therefore, second, this paper proposes to view the analysis of private neighbourhoods as club economies against the bac…

Increasing the attractiveness of a cruise port for cargo business: The contribution of stakeholders

2021

Abstract Cruise and cargo operations, though distinct seaport activities, have sufficiently similar functions that by accommodating cargo business in a largely cruise domain, a port may achieve increased attractiveness and better resource utilization. We sought to conceptualize a framework by which an existing cruise port can integrate divergent stakeholder interests to achieve port attractiveness under this duality. We adopted a qualitative approach involving in-depth interviews with experts representing the port authority and key stakeholders at Port Canaveral, the second busiest multi-day cruise embarkation port in the world. We identified a supply chain integration model as a pathway to…

Cities and regional disparities in the European Union: evolving geographies and challenges for Cohesion Policy

2021

Since the nineties, urban areas have assumed a growing importance in EU Cohesion Policy. This process, which is being implemented through various political steps and policy instruments, has led cities to be recognised as key elements in the promotion of balanced development. After decades of planning experiments at different territorial scales, however, the extent to which EU urban policy has contributed to regional development is currently under debate. This paper seeks to describe the evolution of the urban dimension within EU Cohesion Policy, with a focus on the role of cities in those countries and regions experiencing development problems.

Comparative Analysis of the Social, Demographic and Economic Factors that Influenced Housing Choices in Spain in 1990 and 2000

2008

The housing market is an important sector in the economy of any country. Residential demand (also referred to as `housing consumption') depends on many demographic and social characteristics of the country's population and is also related to economic factors. The aim of the present paper was to evaluate the joint effects of economic, demographic and social factors on household behaviour with respect to housing choices. In addition, an attempt was made to determine the impact of recent economic and structural changes in Spanish society (in 1990 and 2000) on residential demand. It was found that the consequences of these structural changes will have medium- and long-term effects on housing d…
