Transurethral incision of duplex system ureteroceles in neonates: does it increase the need for secondary surgery in intravesical and ectopic cases?
2004
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the relevance of ureterocele ectopia and associated reflux on the outcome of duplex system ureteroceles (DSU) after neonatal transurethral incision (TUI). PATIENTS AND METHODS The study included 41 neonates with a diagnosis of DSU; the ureterocele was ectopic in 24 (58%). Before TUI, vesico-ureteric reflux (VUR) was present in 13 lower moieties (32%) and seven contralateral ureters (17%). TUI was always performed within the first month of life. The follow-up and management were tailored for each patient from the findings at ultrasonography, voiding cysto-urethrography and renal scintigraphy. Results of intravesical and ectopic DSU were compared using Fisher's exact tes…

Transrenal ureteral occlusion: results and problems.
1994
Purpose The effectiveness of transrenal ureteral occlusion was evaluated. Patients and Methods Transrenal ureteral occlusions were performed in 83 ureters of 76 patients. Thirty-one ureters were occluded with use of tissue adhesive, which was secured in place with Gianturco coils in 21. Fifty-two ureters were occluded by means of silicone-filled, detachable latex balloons. Average follow-up was 3.6 months (range, 1 week to 38 months) for patients treated with the tissue adhesive and 7.9 months (range, 1 week to 61 months) for patients treated with the detachable balloons. Results Seventeen (55%) of the 31 ureters occluded with tissue adhesive and 36 (69%) of the 52 ureters occluded with det…
Reflux nephropathy: a clinico-pathological study of 16 cases.
1991
The pathologic features of 16 nephrectomy specimens obtained from patients with a radiological diagnosis of reflux nephropathy were analyzed. Chronic pyelonephritis was diagnosed in 7 cases, renal dysplasia in 5 and segmental atrophy in 4. Clear correlations between pathologic pictures and pathogenic mechanisms involved in the development of renal lesions in kidneys with reflux are difficult to establish. These results show, however, that 'reflux nephropathy' is a broad term, which encompasses both congenital and acquired renal lesions.
Segmental Ureterectomy Versus Radical Nephroureterectomy in Older Patients Treated for Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma
2022
Introduction: The world population is ageing and surgical procedures for older patients are associated with higher perioperative morbidity and mortality rates than in younger patients. Segmental ureterectomy (SU) has been proposed as an alternative to radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) for selected upper tract urothelial carcinomas (UTUC), to reduce post-operative morbidity, and preserve renal function. The aim of this study was to compare RNU and SU in terms of post-operative complications, functional outcomes, and overall survival (OS) in older patients treated for UTUC. Materials and methods: Data of patients aged 75 years or older and treated for UTUC were included. The primary outcome wa…
Lithiasic obstructive uropathy. Hydronephrosis characterization by magnetic resonance pyelography.
2004
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of magnetic resonance (MR) pyelography in patients affected by hydronephrosis due to ureteric stones, in order to identify a pyonephrotic condition. In the last 3 years, 315 patients, who had originally been investigated by ultrasonography, were evaluated with MR pyelography in order to define the etiology of obstruction. In 67 patients hydronephrosis was referred as caused by lithiasis.MR pyelography not only confirmed urinary tract dilatation in all patients, but also identified grade and site of obstruction, both in acute dilatation (25 patients) and in chronic obstructions (42 patients). In 7 patients, MR pyelography documented pyonephro…

Elective segmental ureterectomy for transitional cell carcinoma of the ureter: Long-term follow-up in a series of 73 patients
2012
What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Upper Urinary Tract (UUT) Transitional Cell Carcinoma (TCC) is an uncommon disease and represents approximately 5% of all urothelial carcinomas. We report our series on 73 patients treated with Kidney Sparing Surgery for UUT TCC. Good results have been achieved in terms of oncological outcome comparing this conservative approach to the radical nephrourectomy. OBJECTIVES: • To report the long-term oncological outcome in patients with transitional cell carcinoma of the ureter electively treated with kidney-sparing surgery. • To compare our data with the few series reported in the literature. PATIENTS AND METHODS: • We considered 73 pat…
End Cutaneous Ureterostomy for the Management of Severe Hydronephrosis
2007
Purpose: Although rarely indicated, surgical treatment of severe megaureter can pose a formidable technical challenge, especially in the small infant. We present our experience and outcomes with end cutaneous ureterostomy as a temporizing adjunct to future ureteral reimplantation. Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent end cutaneous ureterostomy between 1993 and 2005. Patient demographics, surgical details and outcomes were recorded. Results: A total of 29 patients (22 males, 7 females) underwent diversion of 34 renal units. Primary megaureter was diagnosed in 15 patients (17 renal units). Secondary megaureter was found in 10 patients (12 …
IL REFLUSSO VESCICO-URETERALE NELL'INFANZIA. OSSERVAZIONE SU 101 URETERI
1982
