Doping and Moral Disapprovals

This paper explores variance in how people morally disapprove wrongs related to doping. The variance may pertain to what type of moral disapproval a person uses or to what they disapprove of. Our exploration is both conceptual and empirical. Conceptually, we distinguish between four types of moral disapprovals that we call blame, judging blameworthy, condemnation and sadness. We elaborate these four moral phenomena through a conceptual scheme that we call the matrix of moral disapprovals. The matrix is the central conceptual innovation of our paper. This study examines Finnish sport managers’ stories of their careers: how they had proceeded and what kinds of meanings they constructed in their stories. The data included interviews of sixteen Finnish operational and governmental managers from the top of Finnish sport administration. Four different story types were distinguished: the story of growth, drifting story, the story of coincidence and aspiration story. Sport managers’ stories illustrated at the individual level how the sport managers’ careers were constructed, but they also reflected the social reality and the wider sociocultural context of Finnish sport administration and management. The purpose of this paper is to examine the ethical organizational culture of top sports organizations in Finland. We were especially interested in how employees of sports organizations evaluate perceptions of ethical organizational culture and perceive specific ethical organizational virtues. We applied a mixed methods approach. We gathered the empirical material through questionnaires and interviews with representatives from Finland’s top sports organizations. Suomessa naiset osallistuvat työelämään varsin aktiivisesti verrattuna Euroopan muihin maihin. Miesten ja naisten välillä työelämässä on kuitenkin suuria eroja, esimerkiksi palkoissa. Naiset eivät myöskään pääse nousemaan yritysten tai yhteisöjen johtoon samalla tavalla kuin miehet, vaan heidän urakehityksensä pysähtyy usein näkymättömään, niin sanottuun lasikattoon, joka estää nousun keskijohdosta korkeimpaan johtoon. Naiset ovat kuitenkin tutkimusten mukaan erittäin päteviä johtajia ja tietyillä osa-alueilla, kuten tunnejohtamisen puolella, jopa parempia kuin miehet. Tämän artikkelin lähtökohtana on kysymys, mitkä olivat K. E. Levälahden urheiluajatusten päämäärät ja arvot. Tällöin selvitettäväksi tulee, millaisia yhtäläisyyksiä ja eroja Levälahden ajattelulla oli muiden Valkoisen Suomen urheiluvaikuttajien ajatuksiin; lähinnä urheilufilosofi Lauri Pihkalaan ja urheilukoulutuksen kehittäjään Arvo Vartiaan. Artikkeli on tutkimuskirjallisuuteen ja K. E. Levälahden omiin kirjoituksiin perustuva katsausartikkeli.
