‘Life is team play’: social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in the context of Special Olympics

2022

This article provides insights from an empirical study on the meaning of social inclusion for Finnish athletes with intellectual disabilities (ID) who participate in Special Olympics (SO). A further objective was to explore the athletes’ perceptions of the role SO has played in their lives regarding their personal experiences of social inclusion. Data were transcripts of five focus group interviews carried out with a total of 31 participants during the last SO World Winter Games in 2017. The content was analysed with the aim of identifying the main themes in the athletes’ conversations about social inclusion. Comparison of body segment models for female high jumpers utilising DXA images

2022

In motion analysis of sport competitions, the question is often about the most convenient choice for defining the segment endpoints when no visible landmarks can be used. The purpose of the present study was to determine the location of the body centre of mass (CoM) of female high jumpers by using a high accuracy reaction board and two different segment models: Dempster, 1955, de Leva, 1996. Digitising the bony landmarks from the images of dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and overhead digital camera were used to compare the digitising accuracy. The location of the CoM determined by a reaction board was 55.88 ± 0.52 % of subjects’ body height. The segment model of Dempster digitized fr…

Vuosikymmenet suomalaisen hiihtohistorian kulisseissa : tapaustutkimus vapaaehtoistoiminnan merkityksistä ja muutoksista Lahden MM-hiihdoissa

2017

Lahden Salpausselällä on pitkät perinteet pohjoismaisten hiihtolajien kilpailuareenana. Pohjoismaisten hiihtolajien MM-kilpailut on järjestetty siellä yhteensä seitsemän kertaa seitsemällä eri vuosikymmenellä. Lisäksi Lahdessa on kilpailtu vuosittain pohjoismaisten hiihtolajien maailmancupin osakilpailut, Salpausselän kisat. Kumpaakaan näistä tapahtumista ei oltaisi voitu järjestää vuosien saatossa ilman sitoutuneiden ja kokeneiden vapaaehtoisten joukkoa. Lukuisat vapaaehtoiset ovat olleet mukana kisojen vapaaehtoistoiminnassa jo useamman vuosikymmenen ajan. Tässä laadullisessa tapaustutkimuksessa selvitettiin, millaisia merkityksiä pitkään vapaaehtoisena toimineet antavat vapaaehtoistoimin…

The process of data analysis included inductive and deductive approaches. Cognitive therapy…

Kultapoikia, pilkkuvirheitä ja Suomi-teemaa : jääkiekon maailmanmestaruuskisojen 2012 mediajulkisuus Helsingin Sanomissa

2013

Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tarkastella jääkiekon maailmanmestaruuskisojen 2012 Helsingin Sanomissa ajalla 2.1.–30.6.2012 saamaa mediajulkisuutta ja tämän julkisuuden piirteitä. Tavoitteena oli selvittää, kuinka paljon ja millaista julkisuutta kyseinen vuosittainen urheilutapahtuma valitussa mediassa sai. Lisäksi haluttiin selvittää, miten eri Suomen joukkueen pelaajat nousivat teksteissä esille. Tutkimuksen aiheeseen johdattavassa teoriaosuudessa kuvailtiin aluksi medioitumisen sekä julkisuuden käsitteitä sekä esiteltiin mediavälitteistä julkisuuden ilmiötä agenda setting -teorian sekä kehystämisen käsitteen kautta. Social Learning among Transplant Event Volunteers

2019

Volunteering in adapted sports competitions has not been studied as much as in other competitions. Survey data from volunteers in a supportive role at the European Transplant Sport Week 2016 in Finland were analysed to report the way involvement in the event increased knowledge of transplantation. Through social learning theory, the aim of the study was to report the associations between changes in knowledge, training and volunteering experience of supportive role volunteers. A representative sample of the adult volunteers (n=95, Male=35, Female=60; Disabled=31, non-Disabled=64; Mage=49.7y old, SD=16.8) responded to a web-based survey. Questions included self-perceived knowledge of transpla…

Wax on, wax off, or whatever works for you : on the role of pre-competition emotions in elite karateka

2015

The purpose of the current study aimed to examine the performance related experiences of elite karate athletes prior to a major international competition. The secondary aim was to explore the relationship between athlete and coach performance ratings. Athletes selected emotional and non-emotional words to describe their experiences related to performance. Results indicated that best performance was characterized by high intensities of helpful emotion and non-emotion descriptors, while worst performance was characterized by high intensities of harmful descriptors. Moreover, intensities of emotions and non-emotions during actual good performance neared intensities recalled during best perform…

Does periodization work? Athletes perform better in major events than in minor competitions

2022

Previous studies on periodization have led to the view that most athletes fail to peak at major events. These conclusions might be based on definitions of “peak performance” that are too narrow. In this study, a track and field athlete was defined as succeeding in a competition if their outcome was within the acceptable range from the best result of the season. The data are from seven championship finals and semifinals together with 42 Diamond League competitions from the 2010s, altogether 7,087 individual results. All field events and running events up to 400 m were included. The majority of athletes succeeded in major events (67.0% in sprint and 57.5% in field events). Overall, championsh…
