Effect of fall direction on the lower hip fracture risk in athletes with different loading histories : A finite element modeling study in multiple si…
2022
Physical loading makes bones stronger through structural adaptation. Finding effective modes of exercise to improve proximal femur strength has the potential to decrease hip fracture risk. Previous proximal femur finite element (FE) modeling studies have indicated that the loading history comprising impact exercises is associated with substantially higher fracture load. However, those results were limited only to one specified fall direction. It remains thus unclear whether exercise-induced higher fracture load depends on the fall direction. To address this, using magnetic resonance images of proximal femora from 91 female athletes (mean age 24.7 years with >8 years competitive career) and …
COVID-19 Lockdown
2022
Purpose: To investigate differences in athletes’ knowledge, beliefs, and training practices during COVID-19 lockdowns with reference to sport classification and sex. This work extends an initial descriptive evaluation focusing on athlete classification. Methods: Athletes (12,526; 66% male; 142 countries) completed an online survey (May–July 2020) assessing knowledge, beliefs, and practices toward training. Sports were classified as team sports (45%), endurance (20%), power/technical (10%), combat (9%), aquatic (6%), recreational (4%), racquet (3%), precision (2%), parasports (1%), and others (1%). Further analysis by sex was performed. Results: During lockdown, athletes practiced body-weigh…
11-vuotiaiden lasten liikunta-aktiivisuus : WHO-Koululaistutkimus
2014
TIIVISTELMÄ 11-vuotiaiden lasten liikunta-aktiivisuus – WHO-Koululaistutkimus Lehto Anna Pauliina Terveyskasvatuksen Pro Gradu -tutkielma Peltola Maija Elisabet Terveyskasvatuksen Syventävien opintojen opinnäytetyö Jyväskylän yliopisto, Liikuntatieteellinen tiedekunta, terveystieteiden laitos 2014 Sivuja 87, liitteitä 1 Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää, minkä verran 11-vuotiaat pojat ja tytöt harrastavat liikuntaa, mitä lajeja he tyypillisesti harrastavat, ja mitkä syyt ovat merkityksellisiä heidän liikunnan harrastamiselleen. Lisäksi haluttiin selvittää sukupuolen, asuinalueen ja liikunnan syiden yhteyttä lasten kokonaisliikunta-aktiivisuuteen. Tulokset perustuvat vuoden 2010 WHO-Ko…
Neuromuscular, hormonal and oxidative stress responses to endurance running exercises in well-trained runners
2007
The aim of this study was to investigate to which type of running exercises well trained endurance runners respond more favourably with regard to acute neuromuscular and endocrinological responses and exercise-induced oxidative stress. It was hypothesized that these responses depend on the type of running exercise and relate to the physical characteristics. Altogether nine different running exercises and a long walking exercise were performed by a total of 88 male athletes. An intermittent exercise consisting of progressive 20 s runs decreased vertical jump performance in middle distance runners (MID), but improved it in marathon runners (MAR). An 18 – 24 min exhaustive test run, a 40 min i…
The effects of augmented feedback on motor skill learning in shooting : a feedback training intervention among inexperienced rifle shooters
2007
The present study focused on examining the effects of knowledge of performance (KP) on motor skill performance and learning within the context of precision rifle shooting. KP was based on the on-target trajectory of the alignment of the rifle, accompanied by visual or auditory feedback. The effects of KP were evaluated in terms of shooting accuracy, rifle stability, and postural balance. For this purpose, male conscripts (n=58) with limited shooting experience were randomly assigned to the one of the following five groups: a group receiving knowledge of results (KR) with visual KP after each trial, a group receiving KR with visual KP after 50% of the trials, a group receiving KR with audito…
An Ecological Dynamics Approach to Understanding Human-Environment Interactions in the Adventure Sport Context – Implications for Research and …
2022
The last few decades have witnessed a surge of interest in adventure sports, and an emerging research focus on these activities. However, recent conceptual analyses and scientific reviews have highlighted a major, fundamental question that remains unresolved: what constitutes an adventure sport (and are they ‘sports’ at all)? Despite several proposals for definitions, the field still seems to lack a shared conceptualization. This deficit may be a serious limitation for research and practice, restricting the development of a more nuanced theoretical explanation of participation and prac-tical implications within and across adventure sports. In this article we address anot…
Vähenevätkö mahdollisuudet liikuntakokeiluihin?
2020

Orienteering : a journey from the deep forest to the Finns' living rooms, an overview of the orienteering as a sport from 2000 to 2015 in Finland
2017
Orienteering is a sport which has its roots in the early 20th century. Academic research of the development of orienteering has mostly concentrated on the decades of the 20th century. Recently there has not been conducted a thorough research of the evolvement of the Finnish orienteering, even though the both orienteering and the Finnish sport and physical culture, have faced new challenges and changes in the form of technological developments and transformation of the society. The purpose of this research was to determine and describe the possible changes in the Finnish orienteering during 2000-2015. Furthermore, the factors behind these possible changes were illustrated. The data was colle…
Exercise loading and bone structure
2009
The objective of this dissertation was to determine the types of exercise loading that are associated with the strength of bones. Four cross-sectional studies were conducted between 2004 and 2008 including 378 athletes and their 62 referents. Sixteen different sports were classified into five specific categories for the lower extremities and three categories for the upper extremities according to the type of exercise loading.Besides planar DXA-derived hip structural analysis, pQCT, and MRI methods allowing the assessment of true bone cross-sections were used for the bone structure analyses of the tibia, proximal femur, radius, and humerus. At the lower extremity, the high-impact exercise lo…
