FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATIONS: GENITO-URINARY COMPLICATIONS AND ETHICAL-LEGAL ASPECTS

2015

Many women in the world are still undergoing female genital mutilations (FGMs) even if in almost all the countries, the practice of FGM is illegal. The increase of immigration, particularly from African Countries, to Europe, and Italy too, led to consider this phenomenon with particular attention and skill. All the operators in health services need to know the different types of FGMs and the related complications and the psychological and sexual sequels. Urological complications, in particular, are not rare and the changing anatomy of the external genital apparatus can also make the catheter insertion sometimes difficult. This review analyzes the epidemiology of FGMs, the reasons why the p…

FIBRONECTIN (FN) AND UROTHELIAL DAMAGE SECONDARY TO ADJUVANT INTRAVESICAL THERAPY

2014

Introduction and Objectives: Intravesical chemotherapy has been proven effective in preventing recurrence of low-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). BCG is recognised as the best conservative treatment for intermediate and high risk NMIBC. Maintenance for at least one year is required to ameliorate the efficacy of adjuvant therapy. Discomfort and toxicity often cause interruption of adjuvant therapy, BCG particularly. Almost 50% of the patients undergoing BCG does not complete one year. A biomarker of urothelium damage would be helpful for timely detection of toxicity in order to ameliorate patient’s tolerance and compliance. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the gen…

“Accent issue”: foreign accent syndrome following ischemic stroke

2019

Background: Foreign accent syndrome (FAS) is arare syndrome associated with altered speech rhythm and prosody, which listeners perceive as foreign; cerebrovascular accidents, tumors and multiple sclerosis are reported as possible causes of FAS. The pathophysiology of FAS is not yet understood. Case presentation: A 68-year-old Italian man was admitted to the EmergencyDepartment for non-fluent aphasia and dysarthria. Computed tomography (CT) scan did not show abnormalities; the patient was treated with systemic thrombolysis. A repeated brain CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed an infarct in the left primary motor cortex and mild extension to cortico-subcortical frontal regions. …

2012

Introduction: A general awareness of the most common genitourinary diseases is often lacking. The aim of the present study was to investigate the attention of the general practitioner and of the patient to the genitourinary diseases. An incomplete medical history and/or an inadequate physical examination might be responsible of late diagnosis and improper management. Patients and Methods: A self administered questionnaire was obtained by our outpatients before the urological visit. As a preliminary step we administered a very simple questionnaire consisting of four multiple choice questions: 1) Did your general practitioner examine your external genitalia in the last five years? Did you ask …
