Planning and executing sequential motor acts in Parkinson Disease

1997

Many experimental evidences highlighted that Parkinson Disease (PD) patients are particularly impaired in performing a sequence of movements. In the present experiment we focused to study how PD patients plan and execute an action constituted by the sequence of reaching-grasping an object (first motor act) and placing it on a second target (second motor act). We wished to determine whether properties of the target of the second motor act influenced the kinematics of first motor act. The results showed that PD patients modified, as the controls, the initial ballistic phase of reaching according to variation of second target position (object extrinsic properties). In particular, peak accelera…

EMERGING ROLE OF ULTRASOUND IMAGING ASSOCIATED TO CLINICAL NEUROPHYSIOLOGY AS A SUPPLEMENTARY DIAGNOSTICS TECHNIQUE OF PERIPHERAL NERVES PATHOLOGIES:…

2013

PURPOSE: to show the relevance of peripheral nerve ultrasound imaging as a supplementary technique in a clinical neurophysiological evaluation. METHODS: peripheral nerves ultrasound (US) examination was performed in patients with a medical history of nerve entrapment and/or post-traumatic neuropathy but with clinical or neurophysiological unusual findings. A 10-18 MHz transducer was used. RESULTS: we recruited 50 patients with clinical evidence of peripheral neuropathies (25M, 25F): 24 median nerves, 1 anterior interosseous, 14 ulnar, 3 brachial plexus, 2 posterior interosseus, 1 superficial radial, 1 superficial peroneal and 4 common peroneal nerves. Overall 20/50 patients had a history of…

Long-term outcome of antiandrogen monotherapy in advanced prostate carcinoma. Twelve-year’s results of a phase II study.

2003

OBJECTIVE: To present the long-term outcome of patients with locally advanced or metastatic prostate carcinoma treated by first-line antiandrogen monotherapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1983 to 1990, 41 patients with advanced prostate carcinoma were treated with flutamide monotherapy until progression or the appearance of toxicity. Twenty-five patients (61%) had T3-T4N0M0 and 16 (39%) T2-4N0-3M1 prostate carcinoma. Consensus criteria were adopted to evaluate the response. Plasma testosterone and sexual function were recorded for the first 3 years. RESULTS: Flutamide was administered for up to 147 months; seven patients (17%) interrupted the treatment because of toxicity. There was an object…
