Development of a nomogram for the estimation of long-term adherence to clozapine therapy using neutrophil fluorescence

Aims: Previously, we have reported an association between clozapine use and elevated FL3 neutrophil fluorescence, a flow-cytometric parameter for cell viability. Here, we developed and evaluated a pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic model relating FL3-fluorescence to clozapine exposure and derived a nomogram for estimation of long-term adherence. Methods: Data from 27 patients initiating clozapine were analysed using nonlinear mixed effects modelling. The significance of plasma kinins in intestinal obstruction and peritonitis

The present concept of plasmakinin action suggests that they may also play an important role in the pathophysiology of intestinal obstruction and peritonitis. Since the assay of the kinins is still something of a problem, and since the percursor kallikrein can be determined by a standardized method, we studied the titers of kallikrein in the peripheral and portal circulation in dogs with experimental intestinal obstruction and in patients with these disorders. Significantly higher levels of kallikrein were found in intestinal obstruction, particularly in obstruction with strangulation (Fig. 1).

Antibiotic prophylaxis in antenatal nonrefluxing hydronephrosis, megaureter and ureterocele

Observation is a conservative management option in infants with nonrefluxing hydronephrosis, primary nonrefluxing megaureter and ureterocele diagnosed postnatally following antenatal detection of hydronephrosis. Antibiotic prophylaxis might be a sensible regimen under these circumstances to prevent UTI in this population who are potentially at increased risk. However, studies examining the efficacy of prophylactic antibiotics are sparse in this setting. For each condition, prophylactic policies seem extremely variable, and UTI rates vary widely with comparable rates reported between patients followed on and off antibiotics. Clinical examination, PSA and transrectal ultrasound in the detection of prostate cancer. Our experience

– In this retrospective study, the Authors report their experience on the analysis of sensitivity and specificity of DRE, PSA and transrectal ultrasound, individually and in association, in the study of 118 patients with suspected prostate cancer. Results show that the association of these three techniques give a specificity of 96.6% but low sensitivity (53%).

Heat shock protein 27 is involved in SUMO-2/3 modification of heat shock factor 1 and thereby modulates the transcription factor activity

Heat shock protein 27 (HSP27) accumulates in stressed cells and helps them to survive adverse conditions. We have already shown that HSP27 has a function in the ubiquitination process that is modulated by its oligomerization/phosphorylation status. Here, we show that HSP27 is also involved in protein sumoylation, a ubiquitination-related process. HSP27 increases the number of cell proteins modified by small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO)-2/3 but this effect shows some selectivity as it neither affects all proteins nor concerns SUMO-1. Identification of metabolic enzymes in renal cell carcinoma utilizing PROTEOMEX analyses

Abstract PROTEOMEX, an approach which combines conventional proteome analysis with serological screening, is a powerful tool to separate proteins and identify immunogenic components in malignant diseases. The severity grading systems proposed by the Global initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) have changed over time. Abstract Purpose of Review There are some uncertainties about the interactions between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). We critically reviewed recent studies on this topic with a focus on experimental and clinical evidence of bidirectional influences between OSA and CKD, as well as the effects of treatment of either disease. Recent Findings Experimental intermittent hypoxia endangers the kidneys, possibly through activation of inflammatory pathways and increased blood pressure.
