An Interactive Demonstration of Collaborative VR for Laparoscopic Liver Surgery Training

2019

We introduce a collaborative virtual reality (VR) system for planning and simulation in laparoscopic liver surgery training. Patient image data is used for surgical model visualization and simulation. We developed two modes for training in laparoscopic procedures: exploration and surgery mode. Surgical joysticks are used in surgery mode to provide training for psychomotor skills and cooperation between a camera assistant and an experienced surgeon. Continuous feedback from our clinical partner comprised an important part of the development. Our evaluation showed that surgeons were positive about the usability and usefulness of the developed system. For further details, please refer to our f…

Why Translation Is Difficult

2017

The paper develops a definition of translation literality that is based on the syntactic and semantic similarity of the source and the target texts. We provide theoretical and empirical evidence that absolute literal translations are easy to produce. Based on a multilingual corpus of alternative translations we investigate the effects of cross-lingual syntactic and semantic distance on translation production times and find that non-literality makes from-scratch translation and post-editing difficult. We show that statistical machine translation systems encounter even more difficulties with non-literality.

Collaborative Virtual Reality for Laparoscopic Liver Surgery Training

2019

Virtual reality (VR) has been used in many medical training systems for surgical procedures. However, the current systems are limited due to inadequate interactions, restricted possibilities of patient data visualization, and collaboration. We propose a collaborative VR system for laparoscopic liver surgical planning and simulation. Medical image data is used for model visualization and manipulation. Additionally, laparoscopic surgical joysticks are used to provide an opportunity for a camera assistant to cooperate with an experienced surgeon in VR. Continuous clinical feedback led us to optimize the visualization, synchronization, and interactions of the system. Laparoscopic surgeons were …

Designing ICTs for Users with Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Usability Study

2020

Background: Research has supported the cost-effectiveness of cognitive training tools enhanced by information and communication technologies (ICT) in several populations, including individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and age-related cognitive decline. The implementation of ICTs in this population, however, is sometimes challenging to their cognitive and age characteristics. Ultimately, this might compromise the effectiveness of ICT-enhanced therapies in this population. The aim of this study is to test the usability and acceptability of a European project prototype for elderly care, in an attempt to explore the ICT design needs of users with MCI. Methods: Participants were 28 i…

Diagnostic Accuracy and Usability of the ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor Compared to Conventional Holter Technology

2021

Background. Heart rhythm disorders, especially atrial fibrillation (AF), are increasing global health challenges. Conventional diagnostic tools for assessment of rhythm disorders suffer from limited availability, limited test duration time, and usability challenges. There is also a need for out-of-hospital investigation of arrhythmias. Therefore, the Norwegian ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor has been developed to simplify the assessment of heart rhythm disorders. The current study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and usability of the ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor compared to conventional Holter monitors. Methods. Parallel tests with ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor and a Holter monitor were perform…

Genuair® Usability Test: Results of a National Public Survey of the Elderly

2016

Proper use of inhaler devices may be problematic in elderly patients due to age-related difficulties. A survey was administered to elderly patients to investigate the usability of the Genuair® device and patients' subjective viewpoint on the device. A representative sample of the Italian population aged ≥ 65 years was completed with a pre-defined sample of 89 patients with hand arthritis/arthrosis. Of 526 respondents, 88 were not self-sufficient. Only the replies of the 438 self-sufficient respondents were analyzed. A total of 107 participants (24%) reported having respiratory diseases, and 81 of these (76%) were users of inhaler devices. After the first test, the device was considered “pra…

Head-Mounted Mixed-Reality Technology During Robotic-Assisted Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision

2019

INTRODUCTION Head-mounted mixed-reality technologies may enable advanced intraoperative visualization during visceral surgery. In this technical note, we describe an innovative use of real-time mixed reality during robotic-assisted transanal total mesorectal excision. TECHNIQUE Video signals from the robotic console and video endoscopic transanal approach were displayed on a virtual monitor using a head-up display. The surgeon, assistant, and a surgical trainee used this technique during abdominal and transanal robotic-assisted total mesorectal excision. We evaluated the feasibility and usability of this approach with the use of validated scales. RESULTS The technical feasibility of the rea…

Evaluation of web browsing experience by people with cognitive disability

2012

After a review of research in last 10 years we have seen the low output of work on the usability of the web, with respect to users with cognitive disabilities. This time we intend to explore the problems faced with mild or moderate intellectual disabilities when using the World Wide Web. We conducted a study to assess the Web site navigation experience using the Usability Lab of Access Research Unit, University of Valencia, where we recorded and analyzed the Web-user interaction using the technique of Thought Manifesto and Interview, from a qualitative methodological approach, to thereby detect the problems they have when surfing the Web sites for people with cognitive deficits.

Activity of the Elderly in an Eight-Week Case Study

2015

This study explores the engagement of the elderly with a new health-enhancing mobile-optimised web-service: An eight-week case study was carried out. Participants of the study were elderly people: 45 females and 19 males with the average age of 72.3 (SD 5.2) years. Their baseline information and communication technology experiences were evaluated, the data of using each service component was saved to a server and the usability of the service was evaluated. The majority of the users remained active throughout the study. The most frequently used components in the study were memory puzzles and physical exercise. The usability of the components was correlated with the age of the participants. T…
