Ranking of small scale proposals for water system repair using the Rapid Impact Assessment Matrix (RIAM)

2014

Abstract Environmental impacts of small scale projects are often assessed poorly, or not assessed at all. This paper examines the usability of the Rapid Impact Assessment Matrix (RIAM) as a tool to prioritize project proposals for small scale water restoration projects in relation to proposals' potential to improve the environment. The RIAM scoring system was used to assess and rank the proposals based on their environmental impacts, the costs of the projects to repair the harmful impacts, and the size of human population living around the sites. A four-member assessment group (The expert panel) gave the RIAM-scores to the proposals. The assumed impacts of the studied projects at the Easter…

Water quality in forests small retention reservoirs in southern Poland

2018

W pracy przedstawiono analizę jakości wód z terenów trzech nowopowstałych zbiorników małej retencji leśnej (Rudziczka, Niemysłowice I, zbiornik Paciorkowy) zlokalizowanych na terenie Nadleśnictwa Prudnik, w województwie opolskim (południowa Polska). Głównymi funkcjami zbiorników są retencja wody, ochrona przeciwpowodziowa i przeciwpożarowa, funkcje rekreacyjna i ekologiczna. W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań wykonanych w grudniu 2014 i w maju 2015 roku. Oceny jakości wód dokonano zgodnie z obowiązującymi przepisami w sprawie oceny jakości wód. Ponadto przedstawiono ocenę eutrofizacji wód oraz walory użytkowe wody zbiorników (analiza przydatności badanej wody do bytowania ryb). Badania wyka…

Agents driven smart sensors

2017

Any physical area (like schools, home, hospitals etc.) that uses either mobile devices, sensors, embedded systems or computers to gather information from the users and the environment and eventually, adapt according to the new information gained. [1] Smart spaces compromises of heterogeneous hardware which often leads to the issues of interoperability. One way of reducing the heterogeneity between the sensors is to introduce the semantic interface as sensors default interface. Semantic Web provides a common interface and for-mat for data representation so that one can decrease the heterogeneity of data and increase data reusability. [2] With the Smart Spaces, it is important to use only the…

Aesthetic Appeal and Visual Usability in Four Icon Design Eras

2016

Technological artefacts express time periods in their visual design. Due time, visual culture changes and thus affects the design of pictorial representations in technological products, such as icons in user interfaces. Previous research of temporal aspects in human-computer interaction has been focusing on particular interaction situations, but not on the effects of design eras on user experience. The influence of icon design styles of different eras on aesthetic and usability experiences was studied with the method of primed product comparisons. Affective preferences and their processing times were analysed in order to examine visual usability in terms of semantic distance and aesthetic a…

Evaluating the Authenticity of Virtual Environments: Comparison of Three Devices

2016

Immersive virtual environments (VEs) have the potential to provide novel cost effective ways for evaluating not only new environments and usability scenarios, but also potential user experiences. To achieve this, VEs must be adequately realistic. The level of perceived authenticity can be ascertained by measuring the levels of immersion people experience in their VE interactions. In this paper the degree of authenticity is measured via anauthenticity indexin relation to three different immersive virtual environment devices. These devices include (1) a headband, (2) 3D glasses, and (3) a head-mounted display (HMD). A quick scale for measuring immersion, feeling of control, and simulator sick…

On modified α-ϕ-fuzzy contractive mappings and an application to integral equations

2016

Abstract We introduce the notion of a modified α-ϕ-fuzzy contractive mapping and prove some results in fuzzy metric spaces for such kind of mappings. The theorems presented provide a generalization of some interesting results in the literature. Two examples and an application to integral equations are given to illustrate the usability of our theory.

Virtual Distance Lessons in Secondary School Teachers Continuous Education

2015

The paper provides an overview of organization principles of interactive distance teaching as well as its implementation for continuous education course for bilingual education teachers of 6 programme’s subjects. Distance teaching sessions were organized in 10 school’s computer classes. There are considered possible solutions for interactive distance learning classes. Lessons organization, based on the server’s remote session control is described. It is arranged participating teacher survey regarding usability of applied environment and made conclusions about appropriateness of developed approach.

Usability and acceptability of a fall monitoring system

2017

Falls and injurious falls affect one third of the older people. Those experiencing a fall might be unable to call for help remaining unattended for a long time. Pain, hypothermia and dehydration are common consequences. Additionally, ensuing fear of falling may reduce physical activity leading to functional decline and possibly institutionalization. Monitoring fall events the CONFIDENCE system could summon emergency assistance automatically thus reducing the negative consequences of falls. This thesis is part of the European FP7 project “Ubiquitous care system to support independent living” (CONFIDENCE) which developed a fall monitoring system based on three-dimensional (3D) localization of…

Technology in culture : a theoretical discourse on convergence in human-technology interaction

2014

Technology touches so many facets of contemporary life that one is not necessarily conscious any more of how and why it affects daily experience. Awareness of technology’s role often surfaces only when something goes wrong with a product. At that moment, people become aware of a misalignment between their ways of thinking, feeling and behaving, and the form/function of a product, presumably designed to make life easier. Equally ubiquitous and beyond daily awareness are cognitive, affective, and behavioural processes patterned by culture. It has been noted that cultural factors influence the perception and usage of technology. Understanding these processes is important to researchers, design…

Evaluation of ergonomics and efficacy of instruments in dentistry

2013

Abstract: Purpose: To evaluate the ergonomics and efficacy of five instruments used in dentistry for scaling and root planing. Methods: This experimental study with a comparative cross-sectional design was carried out during a simulated scaling and root planing task. Seven female dentists and one dental hygienist aged 26–58 years participated. Five instruments were evaluated in a subjective analysis of usability and musculoskeletal strain and with measurements of muscular activity, postures of the upper limbs, and work productivity. Results: The instruments with the thickest (diameter of 12–14 mm) silicon handles caused the lowest perceived strain in both the fingers/palm and the thumb. Wor…
