Mobile diary for wellness management--results on usage and usability in two user studies.
2008
The prevalence of lifestyle-related health problems is increasing rapidly. Many of the diseases and health risks could be prevented or alleviated by making changes toward healthier lifestyles. We have developed the Wellness Diary (WD), a concept for personal and mobile wellness management based on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Two implementations of the concept were made for the Symbian Series 60 (S60) mobile phone platform, and their usability, usage, and acceptance were studied in two 3-month user studies. Study I was related to weight management and study II to general wellness management. In both the studies, the concept and its implementations were well accepted and considered as…
SenseCam: A new tool for memory rehabilitation?
2016
International audience; The emergence of life-logging technologies has led neuropsychologist to focus on understanding how this new technology could help patients with memory disorders. Despite the growing number of studies using life-logging technologies, a theoretical framework supporting its effectiveness is lacking. This review focuses on the use of life-logging in the context of memory rehabilitation, particularly the use of SenseCam, a wearable camera allowing passive image capture. In our opinion, reviewing SenseCam images can be effective for memory rehabilitation only if it provides more than an assessment of prior occurrence in ways that reinstates previous thoughts, feelings and …

Validation and Extension of the Usability Heuristics for Mobile Map Applications
2016
Heuristic usability evaluation is light but efficient method for finding usability problems. In this paper, we report the process of validation and further development of the previously introduced usability heuristics for mobile map applications. The validation began by testing the heuristics by 58 evaluators who used them for usability evaluation of four different map applications. The evaluators also filled a questionnaire about the understandability of the heuristics. The amount, severity and quality of the problems found with the heuristics were reviewed and the heuristics’ understandability analyzed. As a result, it was shown that the heuristics were efficient for finding usability pro…
Lost or not? : designing and evaluating user interfaces of mobile map services : the viewpoint of supporting users' location awareness
2016
The motivation for this thesis arose from the problem of people getting lost, both with and without mobile maps. I will answer a primary research question: 1) How can we support users’ location awareness with mobile map applications? As an ad-dition to this, I have the following sub-questions: a) Why do people get lost even when using a mobile map application? b) What are the best practices to support navigation? c) How can we research what the important objects in the natural environment are that should be emphasized in mobile maps? d) How do we prevent the user from focusing on the map service at the expense of perceiving the location in the real environment? e) What would a good mobile m…

Parental Attitudes toward Videogames at School
2019
Despite research having highlighted the positive outcomes of the use of videogames to learn, their integration into school contexts remains rare. Literature recognizes the importance of user’s technology acceptance to predict the intention to use and the adoption of new technology in several settings. So far, investigations have primarily focused on students’ and teachers’ opinions, while only a few studies have considered the role of parents. This study aimed to investigate the role of the dimensions of the technology acceptance model on parental preference (254 Italian parents) for the adoption of videogames in primary or secondary schools. Results revealed that 71% of the variance of par…
Emotional obstacles for e-learning – a user psychological analysis
2010
E-oppimisen merkitys koulutuksessa on kasvanut jatkuvasti. Me lähestymme näitä vuorovaikutusongelmia käyttäjäpsykologisesta näkökulmasta.
The Scales of Psychological Well-Being – a validation, usability and test–retest study among community-dwelling older people in Finland
2020
Objectives: To validate the Finnish version of the 42-item Scales of Psychological Well-Being among community-dwelling older people. The study also examined the test–retest reliability and usability, i.e. user experience, of the scales in this age group. Method: The 42-item version of the SPWB was administered as part of a face-to-face interview among 968 men and women aged 75, 80 or 85 years. The subsample for test–retest analyses comprised 42 participants, who in addition to 11 interviewers also answered questions concerning the usability of the scales. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, Cronbach’s alpha coefficients, Pearson and intra-class correlation coefficients, and Kendal…
Towards a Guidance System to Aid in the Dosimetry Calculation of Intraoperative Electron Radiation Therapy
2015
In Intraoperative Electron Radiation Therapy (IOERT), the lack of specific planning tools limits its applicability, the need for accurate dosimetry estimation and application during the therapy being the most critical. Recently, some works have been presented that try to overcome some of the limitations for establishing planning tools, though still an accurate guidance system that tracks, in real-time, the applicator and the patient is needed. In these surgical environments, the acquisition of an accurate 3D shape of the patient’s tumor bed in real-time is of high interest, as current systems make use of a 3D model acquired before the treatment. In this paper, an optical-based system is pre…
