Religious and spiritual motifs in the art of the patients of Nikkilä Hospital

This article focuses on religiousness and spirituality in the art works of psychiatric patients of Nikkilä Hospital, Finland. The pictures analysed here belong to a collection held at the Helsinki City Museum and they were made during the twentieth century. The theoretical frame of the study is a cultural study of mental health. The collection is approached as presenting a specific kind of imagery which has connections not only to the personal history and diagnoses of the patients; their cultural context and hospital environment is also taken into account. Lack of participation in health-promoting behaviors and participation in behaviors that contribute to health risks have been linked to health disparities observed among individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. This chapter presents a basic process model to summarize the effects of socio-structural variables linked to health disparities – socioeconomic status, education, health literacy, ethnicity, and religiosity – on individuals’ beliefs and cognitions that determine behavior. In early-modern Europe, the realm of the sacred could be approached in different ways from within the mundane world, and religious practices were tightly intertwined with social life. The dissertation is concerned with the speeches of Vihtori Kosola (1884–1936), recruiter of jäger, strike breaker and activist. Kosola assumed the leadership of the Lapua Movement in 1929. His most significant speeches were delivered on the peasants’ march of 7 July 1930 and on the 15th anniversary of the war of independence on 16 May 1933. Kosola was a political speaker and the figurehead of the Patriotic people’s movement (IKL) founded in 1932. The purpose of this study is to seek special features in the Laestadian conviction when it functioned on the boundary of Eastern and Western cultures in Karelia. The contacts of Laestadianism in Karelia began in the end of the 1860s and beginning of 1870s. The mediators of the movement were mid-Osthrobothnian building workers and fisher-men. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on valottaa myönteisenä tai kielteisenä koetun uskonnollisen kotikasvatuksen kokemusta ja sen koettuja vaikutuksia. Kertomuksia tarkasteltiin taakka-voimavara-asetelmassa: ovatko kokemukset ja vaikutukset olleet ihmisen mielestä voimavara elämää varten vai elämää raskauttava taakka. Aineistosta pyrittiin erittelemään keskeisimmät myönteisiksi tai kielteisiksi luonnehditut kokemukset ja vaikutukset sekä niiden taustalla olevia kotikasvatuksen piirteitä. Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena tutkimuksena, johon aineisto kerättiin Keski-Suomalainen- ja Opettaja-lehdissä julkaistujen aineistopyyntöjen perusteella saapuneista vapaamuotoisista kirjoitelmista.
