Search for eccentric binary black hole mergers with advanced LIGO and advanced Virgo during their first and second observing runs

2019

When formed through dynamical interactions, stellar-mass binary black holes may retain eccentric orbits ($e>0.1$ at 10 Hz) detectable by ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. Eccentricity can therefore be used to differentiate dynamically-formed binaries from isolated binary black hole mergers. Current template-based gravitational-wave searches do not use waveform models associated to eccentric orbits, rendering the search less efficient to eccentric binary systems. Here we present results of a search for binary black hole mergers that inspiral in eccentric orbits using data from the first and second observing runs (O1 and O2) of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. The search uses min…

Can animation compensate for temporal processing difficulties in deaf people?

2020

International audience; This article addresses the issue of animation as an aid for temporal processing difficulties in deaf people learning the Highway Code. A decision‐making task involving static or animated road situations was performed by 21 deaf and 24 hearing participants. They were confronted with four types of driving situations (overtaking, negotiating roundabouts, highways, and intersections) and had to decide whether or not to proceed. Participants were presented with two different formats (static vs. animated) and two levels of difficulty (simple vs. complex). Results showed that deaf participants had poorer performances in the static condition than hearing participants. Perfor…

Neuroética: ¿Las bases cerebrales de una ética universal con relevancia política?

2010

At the beginning of the XXI century neuroethics was born as a part of bioethics and also as a new kind of knowledge, capable of discovering the neural basis of the human behaviour. From that basis some neuroscientists intend to outline the foundations for a universal ethics. The article 1) analyses critically the process of foundation of such universal ethics, 2) takes into account the human cooperation paradox in order to complete the process, 3) tries to evaluate the contributions of neuroethics to ethics and its suitability to outline the foundations of a universal ethics.

En el siglo XXI nace la neurociencia de la ética con la pretensión de ser un nuevo saber (la neur…

Presumption of Innocence and Deterrence

2018

This paper deals with the presumption of innocence and the law enforcer's incentives to exert investigative effort. Our main result is that, even if the presumption of guilt maximizes deterrence for a given effort by the law enforcer, divergent objectives between the law enforcer (who maximizes the probability of a conviction weighted by the magnitude of the sanction and the type of the citizen) and the public decision-maker (who minimizes social costs) may lead the latter to prefer the presumption of innocence. Indeed, the presumption of innocence may induce the law enforcer to increase investigative efforts thereby improving deterrence. As a consequence, if the law enforcer's effort is re…

The European Courts and the Security Council: Between "Dédoublement Fonctionnel" and Balancing of Values

2009

The recent case law of various international tribunals facing questions related to UN Security Council resolutions shows the clear tendency to grant primacy to the UN legal order. This trend, far from being well founded on formal arguments, appears to be a tribute to a legal order perceived as superior, and, at the same time, is revealing of the ‘value oriented’ approach followed by the courts. Such an approach can be categorized from a theoretical perspective in the light of Scelle's theory of relations between legal orders, whereby the courts implement in their respective legal orders values stemming from the UN legal order. Various critical remarks can be advanced in relation to this att…

Justicia transicional: conceptos clave y aspectos normativos

2018

This paper is an exposition about the key concepts of transitional justice. We will introduce briefly its four basic measures (penal responsibility, truth seeking, victim reparations and nonrepetition guarantees). After that, we will analyse some of the normative aspects and dilemmas that these measures involve. These questions include: opposite exigencies (for example, between truth and justice); problems related with the application of universal abstract norms to particular contexts; the complex balance between truth, memory and reconciliation; a disquisition about the concept of victim and the concept of perpetrator; and a reflection concerning the future of transitional justice.

The Source of Righteousness according to The Homilies on the Epistle of St. Paul to Romans of John Chrysostom

2020

1993

Ever since 1879, when Josef Hyrtl first formulated his thesis that the names of the cephalic and basilic veins, as applied to the arm veins, were of Arab origin, a discussion began between philologists and historians of medicine as the former defended the Greek source of such denominations whilst the latter shared the view of the Viennese anatomist. The author, after making a critical review of the -relevant works published hitherto, unearthes a text drawn from a Persian manuscript dating back to the 15th century that, in his view, confirms the rigthness of the Viennese anatomist's thesis.
