La prescripción farmacéutica en atención primaria. Informe SESPAS 2012

2012

Lipid-lowering drug use in Italian primary care: effects of reimbursement criteria revision

2008

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether the prescribing pattern of lipid-lowering drugs (LLD) changed after reimbursement criteria revision in a general practice in southern Italy. METHODS: From the Caserta-1 Local Health Service database, 93 general practitioners (GPs) who had consistently sent data about their patients during the years 2003-2005 were recruited. Prevalence of use and incidence of new treatments were calculated for each year, stratified by three drug cohorts: statins, omega-3 fatty acids, and fibrates. Subanalyses by gender, age, and indication of use were performed. RESULTS: Overall, 1-year prevalence of LLD use increased from 2003 to 2004. After reimbursement criteria revision (Nove…

Uso degli inibitori di pompa protonica in un Policlinico Universitario

2012

Summary Introduction Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are highly prescribed drugs in Italy and in particular in the Sicilian region but little is known about their use in the hospital setting. Materials and methods PPI utilization and related costs were reviewed retrospectively by examining the pharmaceutical records of drug dispensation to the various wards of the Policlinico Universitario P. Giaccone of Palermo in 2010. Differences in the prescribing rates and drug preferences among the different clinical wards were analyzed. Results A total of 20,420 patients were hospitalized at the Policlinico of Palermo in 2010. Overall, the consumption of PPIs was 120 DDD/100 bed-days for the year 2010 …

The impact of polypharmacy and drug interactions among the elderly population in Western Sicily, Italy.

2017

Aim: Primary endpoint was to report polypharmacy distribution in the general population vs ≥65 years old people and to examine the frequency of drug–drug interactions (DDIs) in the Health Local Unit of Palermo, Italy, in relationship with patients’ age. Methods: Drug prescription data for the year 2014 were extracted from the database of the Local Health Unit of Palermo Province, Italy. Patients were divided into five age groups (0–13, 14–64, 65–69, 70–74, and ≥75 year old). The detection of potential DDIs in polypharmacy profiles was performed with NavFarma software (Infologic srl, Padova, Italia), with DDI classification provided by tool Micromedex Drug Reax (Truven Health Analitics, Mich…

Pattern of drug use by advanced cancer patients followed at home

2001

The aim of this study was to document the drugs most commonly prescribed to control symptoms in advanced cancer patients being followed at home. We analyzed data for 128 patients admitted to a home palliative care program from January 1993 to January 1995. All patients were followed at home until death by a team consisting of doctors and nurses, and were given two or three medical examinations a week. The most frequently prescribed drugs were analgesics and drugs commonly used to prevent NSAID-induced gastric toxicity. Slow-release morphine was the analgesic used most often. Most patients received more than four drugs. Younger people received morphine more often than did older patients. Co…

Has the use of antipyretics been modified after the introduction of different concentrations of ibuprofen into the market?

2014

Introduction: Due to the emergence of new pharmaceutical presentations of ibuprofen (40 mg/mL), an analysis was made on the use of antipyretics in paediatric outpatients in Spain. Ragion pratica e razionalità economica. Oltre la scissione

2020

An ethical algorithm for rationing life sustaining treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic

2020

The burning ethical question raised by the COVID-19 pandemic is how to deal fairly and ethically with a large number of patients simultaneously becoming critically unwell. Across the world, in both developed and developing countries, health systems are grappling with the possibility or the reality that the demand for intensive medical care will outstrip availability. There is a need for ethical guidelines on how to allocate treatment, but such guidelines are potentially highly controversial.1 In this commentary, we set out a simple algorithm (Figure 1), including what we take to be the essential ethical principles that ought to guide resource allocation in any country or setting as well as …
