This Master’s thesis is a study in utopianism at the Punta Mona Sustainable Living and Education Centre, an ecological community of North Americans living on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. The mission statement of Punta Mona is to show “sustainability” as a lived reality and to inspire individuals to return to mainstream society to enact change towards a more “eco-conscious” world. Katsausartikkelissa tarkastellaan yhdysvaltalaisen marxilaissosiologi Erik Olin Wrightin niin sanottuihin todellisiin utopioihin kohdistunutta tutkimusta. The article analyses the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from the perspective of their self-understanding of political sense expressed in key SDG documents, including both UN documents and reports produced by individual countries. Utopia and governance are presented as ideal-typical approaches and analytical tools for qualitative content analysis. This approach is argued to be particularly illuminating in the case of politics of international development, as international development is simultaneously highly utopian and deeply embedded in rationalities of governance. Henri Lefebvre’s lessons from the Bauhaus

Throughout his writings, Henri Lefebvre made sporadic observations on the German art, design, and architecture school Bauhaus. His commentary on the Bauhaus can be read in light of his wider criticism of Modernist architecture and its political project. Despite its revolutionary aspirations, the Bauhaus provided ‘the architectural requirements of state capitalism’. This article argues that looking at Lefebvre’s ambiguous reading of the Bauhaus unveils the more complex trajectory of his thinking on Modernist utopian impulses to change society through design. Epätäydellisessä maailmassa tulee aina olemaan utoopikkoja, jotka kuvittelukyvyllään maalaavat kuvaa tulevaisuudesta, jossa kaikki nykyisyyttä vaivaavat epäkohdat olisi poistettu. Tässä puheenvuorotekstissä tarkastelen, miten utooppisissa teksteissä on läsnä jännite menneisyyden ja tulevaisuuden välillä. Tämä paljastuu esimerkiksi kiinnittämällä William Morrisin kaltaisen utoopikon teksteissä huomio onnellisuuden ja melankolisuuden väliseen suhteeseen utooppisessa tulevaisuudessa.
