Cancer cell–autonomous contribution of type I interferon signaling to the efficacy of chemotherapy

2014

International audience; The immune system is routinely confronted with cell death resulting from the physiological turnover of renewable tissues, as well as from pathological insults of several types. We hypothesize the existence of a mechanism that allows the immune system to discriminate between physiological and pathological instances of cell death, but the factors that determine whether cellular demise is perceived as a neutral, tolerogenic or immunogenic event remain unclear 1. Infectious insults are accompanied by so-called microbe-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs), i.e., viral or bacterial products that activate immune cells through a panel of pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs)…

Sankarina aika : keston kuvaaminen Tarmo Koiviston Mämmilässä

2015

Tarkastelen pro gradu -työssäni ajan kuvaamista Tarmo Koiviston Mämmilä-sarjakuvissa; tutkittavina on neljä albumia: ensimmäinen, vuonna 1978 ilmestynyt Mämmilä – sarjakuvia Suomesta, kuudes Rakennemuutos rassaa (ilmestyi vuonna 1988), www.mammila.fi (2002) ja uusinKiinalainen juttu (2008). Teoreettisena kehikkona olen käyttänyt Gérard Genetten keston (duration) käsitteitä kohtaus (scene), tiivistys (summary), pause (kuvaus) ja ellipsi (ellipsis) sekä näiden lisäksi viidentenä keston kategoriana hidastusta (stretch). Kestokategorioita on tutkittu albumisivun tasolla. Kohtauksiksi olen tulkinnut ajallisesti lyhyehköt tapahtumasarjat, joissa nähdään samat henkilöt samassa tilanteessa ja tilas…

Kansakunnan nykykuvat : narratiivinen analyysi suomalaisesta maisemasta kansallisena visuaalisena tilana

2010

Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan, miten kansallisesti määrittyneet, perinteiset suomalaisen maiseman visuaalisen esittämisen tavat suhteutuvat visuaalisiin representaatioihin nykysuomalaisista maisemista, ja millä tavoin nykysuomalaisten maisemien visuaalisen esittämisen tapa eroaa niistä. Lisäksi pohditaan, millaista voisi olla suomalaisen maiseman kansallinen visuaalinen esittäminen nykypäivän lähtökohdista. Kysymystä innoittaa pohdinta siitä, että suomalaisen maiseman kansalliset visuaalisen esittämisen tavat vastaavat etenkin nykyisin harvoin Suomea todellisena visuaalisena ympäristönä, ja että niitä suomalaisen kansakunnan kuvittajina kyseenalaistetaan harvoin. Tutkimusaineistona käytetään s…

Lipid A in Cancer Therapies Preclinical Results

2009

Studies in animal models showed that the antitumoral effect of LPS and of their biologically active moiety, lipid A, is indirect and relies on the induction of an immune response both innate and specific, leading to cytokine production. They also affect tumor development by inhibiting tumor blood flow and induce necrosis as well as apoptosis of tumor cells. Lipids A have been tested in animals, either alone or as adjuvant in therapeutic vaccines. The efficacy of treatments depends on the type of molecule and on the protocol. In general, increased survival was obtained, accompanied in some cases by tumor regression and cure.

Prognostic factors of overall survival for patients with FIGO stage IIIc or IVa ovarian cancer treated with neo-adjuvant chemotherapy followed by int…

2020

International audience; Introduction The aim of this study was to identify prognostic factors of overall survival in patients with FIGO stage IIIc or IVa ovarian cancer (OC) treated by neo-adjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) followed by interval debulking surgery.Materials and methods Data from 483 patients with ovarian cancer were retrospectively collected, from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2016, from the FRANCOGYN database, regrouping data from 11 centers specialized in ovarian cancer treatment. Median overall survival was determined using the Kaplan-Meier method. Univariate and multivariate analysis were performed to define prognostic factors of overall survival. Results The median overall sur…

Minimally invasive interval debulking surgery in ovarian neoplasm (MISSION trial–NCT02324595): a feasibility study

2016

Background Laparoscopy has acquired an increasing role in the management of ovarian cancer. Laparoscopic cytoreduction could represent a new frontier for selected patients after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT). Objective We sought to assess feasibility and early complication rate of minimally invasive (MI) interval debulking surgery (IDS) in stage III-IV epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) patients after NACT. Study Design This is a phase II multicentric study in advanced EOC cases with clinical complete response after NACT, according to Gynecologic Cancer Intergroup and Response Evaluation Criteria In Solid Tumors criteria. Institutional review board approval was obtained and all patients sign…

Multiplicity and history have a detrimental effect on survival in patients with T1G3 bladder tumors selected for conservative treatment.

2008

Purpose: In the absence of Tis tumor we assessed whether history and multiplicity have a detrimental effect on conservative treatment in carefully selected patients with T1G3 bladder carcinoma. Materials and Methods: Between January 1976 and December 1999, 165 select patients with T1G3 bladder tumors were conservatively treated with transurethral resection plus adjuvant intravesical therapy. Patients with concomitant or previous Tis, previous T1G3, tumor size greater than 3 cm and more than 3 lesions were excluded from analysis. Repeat transurethral resection was not routinely performed. However, cytology had to be negative for atypia before the start of adjuvant intravesical therapy. Resul…
