Water browning or brownification refers to increasing water color, often related to increasing dissolved organic matter (DOM) and carbon (DOC) content in freshwaters. Browning has been recognized as a significant physicochemical phenomenon altering boreal lakes, but our understanding of its ecological consequences in different freshwater habitats and regions is limited. Here, we review the consequences of browning on different freshwater habitats, food webs and aquatic-terrestrial habitat coupling. A synthesis of deimatic behaviour

Deimatic behaviours, also referred to as startle behaviours, are used against predators and rivals. Although many are spectacular, their proximate and ultimate causes remain unclear. In this review we aim to synthesise what is known about deimatic behaviour and identify knowledge gaps. We propose a working hypothesis for deimatic behaviour, and discuss the available evidence for the evolution, ontogeny, causation, and survival value of deimatic behaviour using Tinbergen's Four Questions as a framework. Our overarching aim is to direct future research by suggesting ways to address the most pressing questions in this field. peerReviewed

Indigon sinisestä kokenillin punaiseen : tekstiilivärjäyksessä käytettyjen luonnonväriaineiden tuonti Suomeen (1791–1856)

Tutkimme ulkomaisten luonnonväriaineiden tuontia Suomeen 1790-luvun alusta 1850-luvun puoliväliin. Ajankohtaa voidaan luonnehtia murroskaudeksi väriaineiden käytön historiassa. Selvitämme mitä väriaineita Suomeen tuotiin, millaisia määriä, minneniitä tuotiin sekä mistä satamista väriainelastit olivat lähtöisin. Lähdeaineistomme perustan muodostavat Tanskan Juutinrauman tullitilit, joista on koostettu suomalaisia satamia koskeva tietokanta (FIN-STRO: 1560/1791–1856). Lähdepohjaa on täydennetty muulla tilastoaineistolla sekä laadullisella materiaalilla, kuten värjäysoppailla ja Kansalliskirjaston digitaalisella sanomalehtiarkistolla. Aikaisempi tutkimus äänenvärin ja fundamenttitaajuuden yhtenäisyydestä on keskittynyt tutkimaan niiden havaitsemista toiminnasta erillisenä prosessina. Viimeaikainen tutkimus on kuitenkin osoittanut, että ihmisen havainto- ja toiminta-alueet ovat yhteenkytkeytyneitä. Tässä työssä tutkittiin äänenvärin ja fundamenttitaajuuden yhtenäisyyttä sensomotorisessa synkronoitumistehtävässä, jolloin niiden yhtenäisyydestä saatiin tietoa osana ihmisen tavoitteellista toimintaa. Koeasetelmaan osalllistui 11 koehenkilöä. Kymmenen, joilla oli aikaisempaa musiikillista kokemusta (mediaanivuodet 12.5), aineisto analysoitiin. This work consists of an overview part and three research papers. The subject of this work is a class of models for dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, and new generations of fermionic matter. An introductory overview of the standard model of electroweak interactions is given, as well as an overview of some of the recent developments in the field of walking technicolor models. We study some recently proposed models for dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, namely the minimal walking technicolor (MWT) and next to minimal walking technicolor (NMWT) model.
