Hexagonal boron nitride luminescence dependent on vacuum level and surrounding gases

2015

Abstract Gas sensing properties of hBN powder bulk and nanosize were studied. It was demonstrated that for hBN powders with grain sizes of 70 nm, 1 μm and 5 μm the native defect-induced luminescence observed at 400 nm under 265 nm light excitation and room temperature is sensitive to oxygen gas reducing luminescence intensity. The highest value of luminescence intensity is reached when sample is in vacuum. Results obtained allow conclusion that the hBN powder is prospective for sensing of oxygen gas. Some material properties such as dependence of luminescence intensity on vacuum level and pumping time, ratio of luminescence intensity when sample is in vacuum and gas, its dependence on mater…

Studies of TiO2 Ceramics Structure after Thermal Treatment at Different Conditions

2014

The present work describes results of investigation of structural characteristics of TiO2 ceramics, depending on temperature and thermal treatment conditions by using a variety of characterization techniques. TiO2 ceramics was prepared by extrusion method and developed as a material for electrodes for innovative water treatment technologies. It was shown that non-stoichiometric phase TiO1.95 was observed after thermal treatment of TiO2 ceramics under high vacuum conditions.

Corrosion resistance of the vacuum arc deposited Ti, TiN and TiO2 coatings on large area glass substrates

2000

An industrial installation for vacuum arc deposition is presented. Its potential in the field of decorative coatings for large area glass sheets is demonstrated. In particular it is possible to deposit patterned coatings through a polymeric textile mask. The ability to deposit uniform multilayer coatings having interference colours onto large silicate glass sheets is shown. Titanium, titanium nitride and titanium dioxide coatings on silicate glass have been characterized in terms of composition and corrosion resistance. Depth profiling was achieved with the aid of Auger electron spectroscopy. The corrosion resistance of TiN coatings is higher than that of TiO 2 . The corrosion resistance of…

In-situ study of multi-phase indium nanoparticle growth on/into CuPcF4 organic thin film in ultra-high vacuum conditions

2021

Abstract We study the in-situ growth of a nanocomposite material consisting of a thin CuPcF4 film and multiphase/multidimensional indium nanoparticles, self-organizing on the surface and in the bulk, at various stages of thermal deposition of metal on an organic film under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. The analysis of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) images provided valuable information about the evolution of morphology, size, density, and distribution of indium nanoparticles upon indium deposition. These 2D/3D ultra-small nano-objects turned out to have not only body-centered tetragonal (bct) crystal structure, typical for bulk indium, but also unusual face-centered…

Influence of the tip effect of a carbon nanostructure on low current electrical arc initiation

2009

During their setting off, circuit breakers and vacuum switch devices are accompanied by an electric arc whose physical and chemical properties are governed by emissive current sites at the cathode surface called cathode spots. Assuming the continuity of the current on the cathode surfaces, the cathode spots contribute to supply the electrical arc by electron emission and material ejection. Thus they cause erosion on the contact electrodes inducing a dysfunction of contactors. The apparition of these cathode spots is due essentially to dust particles and surface irregularities at different scales. This experimental work represents a contribution to the understanding of the electrical arc beh…

On the thermal-hydraulic performances of the DEMO divertor cassette body cooling circuit equipped with a liner

2020

Abstract In the framework of the Work Package DIV 1 - “Divertor Cassette Design and Integration” of the EUROfusion action, a research campaign has been jointly carried out by University of Palermo and ENEA to investigate the steady-state thermal-hydraulic performances of the DEMO divertor cassette cooling system. The research activity has been focussed onto the most recent design of the Cassette Body (CB) cooling circuit, consistent with the DEMO baseline 2017 and equipped with a liner, whose main function is to protect the underlying vacuum pump CB opening from plasma radiation. The research campaign has been carried out following a theoretical-computational approach based on the finite vo…

Molecular Passivation of MoO3: Band Alignment and Protection of Charge Transport Layers in Vacuum-Deposited Perovskite Solar Cells

2019

Vacuum-deposition of perovskite solar cells can achieve efficiencies rivalling solution-based methods and it allows for more complex device stacks. MoO3 has been used to enhance carrier extraction to the transparent bottom electrode in a p-i-n configuration, here we show that by inserting an organic charge transport molecule it can also be used on the top of a perovskite absorber in a n-i-p configuration. This strategy enables the first vacuum-deposited perovskite solar cells with metal oxides as charge transporting layers for both electrons and holes leading to power conversion efficiency > 19 %.

Efficient Photo- and Electroluminescence by Trap States Passivation in Vacuum-Deposited Hybrid Perovskite Thin Films

2018

Methylammonium lead iodide (MAPI) has excellent properties for photovoltaic applications, although it typically shows low photoluminescence quantum yield. Here, we report on vacuum-deposited MAPI perovskites obtained by modifying the methylammonium iodide (MAI) to PbI2 ratio during vacuum deposition. By studying the excitation density dependence of the photoluminescence lifetime, a large concentration of trap states was deduced for the stoichiometric MAPI films. The use of excess MAI during vacuum processing is capable of passivating these traps, resulting in luminescent films which can be used to fabricate planar light-emitting diodes with quantum efficiency approaching 2%.
