Prosociality as a mediator between teacher collaboration and turnover intention
2019
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the mediating role of prosociality, which is defined in terms of helping and benefitting others, between teacher collaboration and their turnover intentions. Prosociality was measured as prosocial impact and prosocial motivation.Design/methodology/approachThis study was conducted through a cross-sectional survey of 260 elementary and junior high school teachers in Japan. Internal and External Hiring
2019
Using large-scale, linked, employer–employee, Finnish panel data, the authors examine firms’ internal versus external hiring decisions more comprehensively than has prior literature. The results show that vacancies in job hierarchies are filled more often by horizontal moves than by promotions. Most horizontal moves are external and within the same job functions, so that internally promoted workers face external competitors occupying higher job levels. Compared to internally promoted workers, external and internal horizontal hires have stronger observable ability indicators (e.g., education, experience, prior work history) but weaker job performance in the year preceding the transfer. Inter…
A new approach to stress of conscience's dimensionality : Hindrance and violation stressors and their role in experiencing burnout and turnover inten…
2023
Aims To identify a valid, longitudinally invariant factor model for stress of conscience and to investigate how stress of conscience dimensions associate with burnout and turnover intentions. Background There has been a lack of consensus about the number and content of stress of conscience dimensions, and a lack of longitudinal studies on its development and outcomes. Design A longitudinal, person-centred survey study using the STROBE checklist. Methods Healthcare personnel (n = 306) rated their stress of conscience in 2019 and 2021. Longitudinal latent profile analysis was used to identify different subgroups based on the employees' experiences. These subgroups were then compared in terms …
Psychophysical burden and lack of support : Reasons for care workers’ intentions to leave their work in the Nordic countries
2021
Long-term care of older adults is currently suffering from a shortage of trained personnel and high turnover rates. Care work is poorly paid, demanding, increasingly time-bound and both mentally and physically burdensome. In this study, we examined the individual, organisational and economic factors that predict professional care workers’ intentions to leave their current employment, using the NORDCARE survey data (2015, N = 3801) collected in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The respondents were mainly practical and assistant nurses. The analysis showed that the predictors of intentions to leave were similar in the four countries. The most consistent organisational predictors of leavin…
Physical Work, Customer Service, or Teamwork? : Language Requirements for Seasonal Cleaning Work in the Booming Arctic Tourism Industry
2021
In many parts of the world, cleaning services are mostly subcontracted, which means intense competition and increased demand for efficiency. Consequently, the terms and conditions of employment have declined and the turnover of workers is high. Remote areas such as the Arctic face particular difficulties recruiting and retaining cleaning workers. Nonetheless, possibilities to earn and aspirations for a better life bring center – periphery, cross-border, and lifestyle mobilities to the peripheral north, especially in winter. This chapter examines cleaning as seasonal blue-collar work in a booming tourist destination in Arctic Finland. Applying an ethnographic and discourse analytical approac…

An investigation into voluntary employee turnover and retention factors in sport organizations
2017
In the past few decades, sport organizations have undergone a major change in their management practices as they are expected to become more and more formal and professional-like. Despite this pressure, human resource managers should give more attention to the retention function in human resource management systems. As employees are the lifeline of sport organizations, much emphasis should be placed on preventing their voluntary turnover. Utilizing qualitative and inductive grounded theory building methods this study aims to provide invaluable information to sport managers about why employees leave or remain in sport organizations. Given the scant research on turnover and retention in sport…
