Tyttöjen koulutus nousi Yhdysvalloissa 1800-luvun alussa yhdeksi keskeisimmistä keskustelunaiheista. Vuosisadan alussa ryhdyttiin tyttöjen koulutusmahdollisuuksia parantamaan myös käytännössä. Lisäksi ajankohtaan kytkeytyvät naisten rooleihin ja tehtäviin tehdyt tarkennukset, jotka nivoutuvat opetuksen kehitykseen ja aatemaailman sekä talouden muutoksiin. Tutkin tässä työssä tyttöjen koulutusta kyseisellä aikakaudella julkaistujen teosten ja aikakausjulkaisujen pohjalta. Tarkoituksena on selvittää, miten tyttöjen koulutus kehittyi Yhdysvalloissa 1800-luvun alussa ja mitkä seikat vaikuttivat opetuksen sisältöön ja tasoon. The objective of this qualitative study is to reveal the discursive reality of Finnish women, who have chosen to follow their husbands to expatriate assignments. The research material includes interviews of seventeen (17) Finnish housewives who lived in Singapore in 1999. The primary theoretical framework of the study is a social-constructive view, in which the reality is seen to have been constructed through meanings that create and maintain cultural practices, social roles and institutions. In this article, I discuss the private dress collection of Brita Kekkonen (1927–2013), a diplomatic wife, who was a very well-known figure in Finland during the period of the Cold War. Brita Kekkonen was also a very talented dress-maker and a very fashionable figure in diplomatic circles. Some eighty outfits made by Brita Kekkonen have survived to this day, in addition to her volumi-nous pattern collection, containing more than 1,000 patterns from several decades.
