Development and validation of the SIMPLE endoscopic classification of diminutive and small colorectal polyps
2018
Abstract Background Prediction of histology of small polyps facilitates colonoscopic treatment. The aims of this study were: 1) to develop a simplified polyp classification, 2) to evaluate its performance in predicting polyp histology, and 3) to evaluate the reproducibility of the classification by trainees using multiplatform endoscopic systems. Methods In phase 1, a new simplified endoscopic classification for polyps – Simplified Identification Method for Polyp Labeling during Endoscopy (SIMPLE) – was created, using the new I-SCAN OE system (Pentax, Tokyo, Japan), by eight international experts. In phase 2, the accuracy, level of confidence, and interobserver agreement to predict polyp hi…
Multicenter validation study for the certification of a CFTR gene scanning method using next generation sequencing technology.
2018
AbstractBackground:Many European laboratories offer molecular genetic analysis of theCFTRgene using a wide range of methods to identify mutations causative of cystic fibrosis (CF) and CFTR-related disorders (CFTR-RDs). Next-generation sequencing (NGS) strategies are widely used in diagnostic practice, and CE marking is now required for most in vitro diagnostic (IVD) tests in Europe. The aim of this multicenter study, which involved three European laboratories specialized in CF molecular analysis, was to evaluate the performance of Multiplicom’s CFTR MASTR Dx kit to obtain CE-IVD certification. Methods:A total of 164 samples, previously analyzed with well-established “reference” methods for t…

Quantifying both ammonium and proline in wines and beer by using a PDMS composite for sensoring.
2019
Abstract Two of the reagents involved in the Berthelot's reaction, thymol and nitroprusside, were embedded in a PDMS composite in order to apply this assay to determine ammonium and proline, in wine and beers. Safety, portability, rapidity, cost-effectiveness and simplicity of the assay were improved. For the proline determination, a modified Berthelot's reaction, which included a ring cleavage of proline, was optimized. The accuracy of the assay was tested. The limits of detection for ammonium was 0.12 µg mL−1 and for proline was in the range from 0.7 to 4.1 µg mL−1, depending on the kind of wine (white, red, or sweet), for beer the LOD was 6 µg mL−1. The precision achieved was slower than…
Real-Time Photoplethysmography Imaging System
2011
Real-time non-contact photoplethysmography imaging (PPGI) system for high-resolution blood perfusion mapping in human skin has been proposed. The PPGI system comprises of LED lamp, webcam and computer with video processing software. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the reliability of the PPGI system when measuring blood perfusion. The validation study of PPGI and laser-Doppler perfusion imager (LDPI) was performed during local warming of palm skin. Results showed that the amplitude of PPGI increases immediately after warming and well correlated with the mean LDPI amplitude (R=0.92+-0.03, p<0.0001). We found that PPGI technique has good potential for non-contact monitoring of blood p…
Validation of the Comprehensive Feeding Practices Questionnaire with parents of 10-to-12-year-olds
2011
Abstract Background There is a lack of validated instruments for quantifying feeding behavior among parents of older children and adolescents. The Comprehensive Feeding Practices Questionnaire (CFPQ) is a self-report measure to assess multiple parental feeding practices. The CFPQ is originally designed for use with parents of children ranging in age from about 2 to 8 years. It is previously validated with American and French parents of children within this age range. The aim of the present study was to adapt and test the validity of this measure with parents of older children (10-to-12-year-olds) in a Norwegian setting. Methods A sample of 963 parents of 10-to-12-year-olds completed a Norwe…
Validating a Test for Measuring Knowledge and Understanding of Economics Among University Students
2019
Abstract. University students' knowledge and understanding of economics have mostly been investigated cross-sectionally; however, longitudinal analyses are needed to determine which factors influence knowledge development and to draw valid conclusions based on test results. In the WiWiKom II project, a quasi-experimental longitudinal study was conducted assessing bachelor students of business and economics over the course of their studies in Germany (N = 39 universities). In this project, running from 2016 – 2019, the test-takers complete the WiWiKom II-test of economic knowledge (adapted TUCE4G and TEL4G items) and a general cognitive ability test (BEFKI 11) at four measurement points, ea…
Validity of the study of sentinel lymph nodes in the treatment of breast carcinoma.
2004
Since it was introduced in the 1990s, axillary sentinel lymph-node biopsy has been rapidly and widely adopted to avoid complete axillary dissection (though this is still the standard procedure). The aims of the study were two-fold: (i) to determine the value of different techniques of sentinel lymph-node identification and (ii) to verify the predictive value of such procedures through histological examination of the sentinel lymph node and axillary dissection in the same patients. Both sentinel lymph-node biopsy and axillary dissection were performed in 230 patients with T1 and T2 (< 3 cm) carcinoma of the breast. Preoperative lymphoscintigraphy was able to identify the sentinel lymph node …
A validation study of an Italian version of the "ID Migraine".
2007
Background.—Migraine is a highly prevalent and disabling disease which is substantially underdiagnosed in primary care. Recently, the ID Migraine, a self-administered questionnaire, consisting of only 3 items, was shown to be a valid and reliable screening instrument for migraine in primary care in the United States. Objective.—The aim of the present study was to validate an Italian version of the “ID Migraine” questionnaire. Methods.—Two hundred and twenty-two consecutive headache patients referring to 8 headache centers in Sicily (Italy) completed an Italian version of the ID Migraine. The responses to the questionnaire were compared with the diagnosis of headache made by a headache speci…
