The relevance of biographic narratives for social workers’ professional memory, reflexivity and identity
2020
The present article is about the use of biographic methods and oral history, and its contribution to developing processes of critical reflection and reflexivity. It is based on a set of oral data collected from Portuguese social workers who played an active role in the revolutionary phase during the transition from dictatorship to democracy in Portugal (following the 25th April 1974 military coup). The article explores how the use of biographic methods (integrated within a historical methodological framework), other than simply producing accounts of past experiences, allowed interviewees to re-capture, re-interpret and re-signify their own experiences in the light of changing professional …
Loyalist and patriot political discourses in the American Revolutionary War 1773-1783 : a comparative discourse analysis of power, representation and…
2018
Temaattisesti työ on jaettu kahteen osaan. Ens…
Radical Experiences of Portuguese Social Workers in the Vanguard of the 1974 Revolution
2019
This article focuses on the contribution of social workers to the Portuguese democratic transition in the 1970s. Their involvement in urban social mobilizations and in the cooperative movement will offer a perspective on the participation of social workers alongside the Revolutionary process and how they, through engaging with social mobilization, grass-roots initiatives and socio-political activism deployed practices consistent with radical social work frames. It is argued that the Revolution provided the structural conditions for social workers to engage with radical practice and that their intervention constituted a form of agency for socio-political transformation while influencing prof…

Transnational Constructors of Parliamentary Democracy in Swedish and Finnish Constitutional Controversies, 1917–1919
2019
During the First World War, the legitimacy of established polities was challenged everywhere in Europe. Not only the combatant great powers but also smaller states witnessed a resurgence of constitutional disputes and competing ideological conceptualizations of revolution and reform, the will of the people, democracy, and parliamentarism. While these controversies primarily focused on the future of the national polities concerned, historical experiences and discourses accelerated by the war and the Russian Revolution were transnationally interconnected and contributed to discursive transfers between political cultures. Swedish and Finnish socialists were linked by their internationals, libe…
Reform and revolution in Scandinavia, 1917–1919 : Entangled histories and visions of the future
2019
The articles in this special issue, entitled Reform and Revolution in Scandinavia, 1917–1919: Entangled Histories and Visions of the Future, deal with the political turmoil in Scandinavia in the late 1910s, accelerated by the First World War and the revolutions in Russia in February/March and October/November 1917 and eventually in Germany in the autumn of 1918. Their special focus is on the political debates about reform and revolution and the related visions of the future of political order and social structures in national contexts and across borders. The articles examine how actors with different agendas in different contexts exploited the opportunities opened up by a window of change. …
Political Action Beyond Resistance: Arendt and "Revolutionary Spirit" in Egypt
2016
The article examines what it calls the "politics-as-resistance" frame in contemporary political theory, originating in the works of Michel Foucault and Judith Butler. This way of organizing political experience is contrasted with Hannah Arendt's political thought, particularly her writings on revolutionary action. Arendt's often overlooked – and partly unpublished – passages on virtù and fortuna are further suggested as important additions to her thinking on action. I argue that Arendt's "world-centric" approach can illuminate certain aspects of political experience that remain dimmed in the more subject-oriented politics-as-resistance frame. Particular focus is paid to the austere notion o…

Iäisyydestä aikaan, ajasta iäisyyteen : evoluutio ja siihen liittyvät temporaaliset narratiivit Sun Yatsenin poliittisessa argumentaatiossa
2008
Tutkimuksen tarkoitus on analysoida Kiinan ensimmäisenä presidenttinä toimineen Sun Yatsenin ajan retoriikkaa. Keskityn erityisesti Sunin tapaan käyttää evoluutio-käsitettä argumentaationsa apuna ja tähän evoluutio-käsitteeseen liittyviin ajallisiin narratiiveihin. Tutkimuksen ensisijaisena aineistona on Sunin tunnetuin teos Kansan kolme periaatetta. Olen lisäksi analysoinut myös muita kysymyksenasettelun kannalta relevantteja Sunin kirjoittamia tekstejä. Teoreettisena näkökulmana minulla on Reinhart Koselleckin temporalisaatio-teesi, jota sovellan työssäni kiinalaiseen kontekstiin. Tämä asetelma sijoittaa Sunin argumentaation osaksi laajempaa kontekstia. Taustaoletuksenani on, että Kiinass…
