Athletes' feeling states related to best and worst soccer games and the coaches' ability to recognize them
2014
The coach-athlete relationship is an important factor linked to the performance and well-being of athletes. Athlete’s feeling states prior to performance and the ability of a coach to monitor these states are equally important. However, this area still lacks the study of the coach’s ability to effectively “read” their players in their successful and unsuccessful performances. The purpose of this study was to examine the feeling states of eleven selected starters from a female Finnish 1st division football team prior to their best and worst games. A secondary aim was to assess the ability of the coaches to recognize their athletes’ feeling states prior to their successful and unsuccessful ga…

Masters sport is a growing social movement offering the opportunity to participate in competitive sports in later life. Although many studies have explored Masters athletes' experiences, little is known about how other actors in the sport subcultures construct meaning in Masters sport and whether their stories work to support or hinder participation. Our study explored the cultural narrative resources and life scripts surrounding sport and ageing that coaches draw upon in two European countries, England and Finland, where sport policy has put different emphasis on elite sport and sport for all. We analysed interviews from 23 athletics (track and field) coaches (8 women) to understand how th…

Coach-athlete perceived congruence between actual and desired emotions in karate competition and training
2018
Coaches can help athletes regulate emotions but would benefit from tools that help them accurately perceive athletes' emotions. In the present study, we investigated the use of video-recorded performances to compare 3 martial artists' ratings of desired and actual emotions with their coach's ratings. Results show how desired emotions progressively fluctuated throughout competition. Furthermore, desired and actual emotions differed between training and performance contexts. Finally, we report correlations between performance and perceived congruence in desired and actual emotions. Cumulatively, results offer support for the video-assisted recall of emotions as an intervention tool in develop…
