Diagnostic algorithm for familial chylomicronemia syndrome

2016

International audience; Background: Familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS) is a rare genetic disease that leads to severe hypertriglyceridemia often associated with recurrent episodes of pancreatitis. The recognition and correct diagnosis of the disease is challenging due to its rarity, and to the lack of specificity of signs and symptoms. Lipid experts, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, pancreatologists, and general practitioners may encounter patients who potentially have FCS. Therefore, cooperation between experts and improved knowledge of FCS is essential in improving the diagnosis. Currently, a consensus on best practice for the diagnosis of FCS is lacking. Methods: Aiming to def…

Musical pitch quantization as an eigenvalue problem

2020

How can discrete pitches and chords emerge from the continuum of sound? Using a quantum cognition model of tonal music, we prove that the associated Schrödinger equation in Fourier space is invariant under continuous pitch transpositions. However, this symmetry is broken in the case of transpositions of chords, entailing a discrete cyclic group as transposition symmetry. Our research relates quantum mechanics with music and is consistent with music theory and seminal insights by Hermann von Helmholtz.

A simple tool to forecast the natural frequencies of thin-walled cylinders

2023

Abstract. This paper presents an approximate method to predict the natural frequencies of thin-walled cylinders. By taking inspiration from a previous work of one of the authors, the starting point of the proposed approach is a proper construction of reasonable eigenfunctions. However, a new simple tool based on the principle of virtual work has been developed to estimate the natural frequencies and the amplitude of vibration without complex numerical resolution. Moreover, the applicability of the model is extended to all the most common constraint conditions. The identification of the natural frequencies of a continuous cylinder is reduced to an eigenvalue problem based on a matrix whose e…

Comparison of three algorithms of non-invasive markers of fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C

2011

Aliment Pharmacol Ther 2012; 35: 92–104 Summary Background  Preliminary data suggest that performance of non-invasive markers for liver fibrosis in hepatitis C may improve when combined. Three algorithms based on the combination of Fibrotest, Forns’ index and AST-to-platelet ratio (APRI) have been proposed: Sequential Algorithm for Fibrosis Evaluation (SAFE biopsy); Fibropaca algorithm; Leroy algorithm. Aim  To compare three algorithms to diagnose significant fibrosis (≥F2 by METAVIR) and cirrhosis (F4). Methods  A total of 1013 HCV monoinfected cases undergoing liver biopsy were consecutively enrolled in seven centres. Fibrotest, APRI and Forns’ index were measured at the time of liver bio…

Innovative “Green” and Novel Strategies for the Extraction of Bioactive Added Value Compounds from Citrus Wastes—A Review

2017

Citrus is a major processed crop that results in large quantities of wastes and by-products rich in various bioactive compounds such as pectins, water soluble and insoluble antioxidants and essential oils. While some of those wastes are currently valorised by various technologies (yet most are discarded or used for feed), effective, non-toxic and profitable extraction strategies could further significantly promote the valorisation and provide both increased profits and high quality bioactives. The present review will describe and summarize the latest works concerning novel and greener methods for valorisation of citrus by-products. The outcomes and effectiveness of those technologies such a…

Effect of storage period under variable conditions on the chemical and physical composition and colour of Spanish refrigerated orange juices

2005

The effects of the physicochemical and quality characteristics of various minimally pasteurized refrigerated orange Spanish juices and their changes with storage time and temperature were investigated. Essential oils, acidity, conductivity, diacetyl index, hydroxymethylfurfural, formol index, viscosity and ascorbic acid varied with storage time more significantly at 10 degrees C than at 4 degrees C. Density, colour and pectinmethylesterase did not vary at 4 degrees C. Some of the parameters could be used as indicators of quality loss or spoilage of the juices. The degradation kinetics of the concentration of remaining ascorbic acid against time follows a straight line whose slope indicates …

Conversion as Negotiation. Converts as Actors of Civil Society

2020

This article focuses on the religious movement of the Ahmadiyya and its civil society organization, Humanity First, in West-Africa and in Europe. Particular attention is paid to the place of converts within these two institutions. Conversions to an Islamic minority and the actions of this minority are studied through the prism of social commitment. I examine the intersections between religious values, the ideas of solidarity in the societies under scrutiny and, the kaleidoscopic range of Muslim charities. The paper investigates conversion as negotiation in regard to gender, social mobility, and power. Conversion is approached here as a matter of social relations and not personal belief. I a…

Romanian Folk Literature in Our Classes: A Proposal for the Development of Intercultural Competence

2015

Abstract The present research highlights the ways in which folk literature, this valuable tool that contributes to students’ formation from both a human and literary perspective, can promote intercultural competence in class and foster a better integration within the community, while consolidating favorable attitudes towards interculturality. We share Rodriguez Almodovar's view (2009), according to which the folk story makes the geographic space expand; it channels affectivity, while guiding the learning process towards the acceptance of social values that are representative for each culture. The objectives of our study are focused, on the one hand, on improving intercultural competence amo…

PT Symmetry and Weyl Asymptotics

2012

For a class of PT-symmetric operators with small random perturbations, the eigenvalues obey Weyl asymptotics with probability close to 1. Consequently, when the principal symbol is nonreal, there are many nonreal eigenvalues.
