Foetal ECG recovery using dynamic neural networks
2002
Non-invasive electrocardiography has proven to be a very interesting method for obtaining information about the foetus state and thus to assure its well-being during pregnancy. One of the main applications in this field is foetal electrocardiogram (ECG) recovery by means of automatic methods. Evident problems found in the literature are the limited number of available registers, the lack of performance indicators, and the limited use of non-linear adaptive methods. In order to circumvent these problems, we first introduce the generation of synthetic registers and discuss the influence of different kinds of noise to the modelling. Second, a method which is based on numerical (correlation coe…
PANORMUS-SPH. A new Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics solver for incompressible flows
2015
Abstract A new Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) solver is presented, fully integrated within the PANORMUS package [7] , originally developed as a Finite Volume Method (FVM) solver. The proposed model employs the fully Incompressible SPH approach, where a Fractional Step Method is used to make the numerical solution march in time. The main novelty of the proposed model is the use of a general and highly flexible procedure to account for different boundary conditions, based on the discretization of the boundary surfaces with a set of triangles and the introduction of mirror particles with suitable hydrodynamic properties. Both laminar and turbulent flows can be solved (the latter using t…
The role of parental expectations and students' motivational profiles for educational aspirations
2016
Abstract The present study examined the stability and change of students' motivational profiles from Grade 7 (Time 1) to Grade 9 (Time 2), using task values and self-concepts of ability in mathematics, Finnish language, and arts as indicator variables. The study also examined the effects of students' (Grade 7: N = 231; Grade 9: N = 237) motivational profiles and of their parents' educational expectations at Grade 7 on their short- and long-term educational plans at Grade 9, controlling for gender and academic achievement. The latent profile analysis identified four motivational profiles: (1) low motivation group; (2) high motivation group; (3) math-motivated group; (4) practical group, wh…
DETERMINING FACTORS AFFECTING THE CHOICE OF SUSTAINABLE FISH PRODUCTS: AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION IN THE ITALIAN AND SPANISH MARKET
2020
In recent decades, the fish stocks have been increasingly depleted, due mainly to the overfishing and illegal fishing. The perception of excessive fishing capacity led in the early 2000s to a review of the Common Fisheries Policy and the approval of regulations aimed at recovering depleted fish stocks and achieving greater sustainability in the sector. At the same time, the environmental awareness of consumers has grown, resulting in a greater attention towards sustainable products. Despite the new trend in consumption, few scholars have so far focused on consumer habits of sustainable fish products (Kirby and Ward, 2014; Asche et al., 2015; Asche and Bronnmann, 2017). To fill this gap, the…

On the Influence of the Radius Between Face and Flank on the Tool Life of Sintered Carbides
1985
Experimental investigations carried out by the authors in interrupted cutting, show that if the cutting edge survives to few impacts, then fracture will take place to very high number of impacts. Early fractures can be explained by assuming the presence of microscopic defects on the tool edge; a longer life can be referred to an increase tool strengthness due to rounding of the edge as a consequence of the wear process. In order to study the effects of the rounding of the edge, experimental tests have been carried out on several inserts of sintered carbides with different values of the radius of the edge between face and flank obtained by a tumbling process. The results show that the greate…
Perspectives of tax reforms in Croatia: expert opinion survey
2014
In order to shape tax reform it is necessary objectively to assess the current stateof-the- art of and of the outlook for the tax system. After having reviewed all previous reforms in the light of the consumption-based (interest- adjusted) concept of direct taxation, which was almost systematically implemented in Croatia in 1994, we present the results of a broad expert opinion survey about the Croatian tax system. The most interesting results suggest the maintenance/(re)introduction of different tax incentives and reduced VAT rates, rejection of a flat tax as well as decrease of tax brackets, an increase in alcohol and tobacco duties, the introduction of a financial activities tax, a furth…
To lead or to wait? An application to internationalization strategies under demand uncertainty
2019
We examine the exports versus foreign direct investment (FDI) decision under demand uncertainty for an asymmetric cost duopoly. One of the firms can lead entry before demand realization or retain flexibility enjoying an informational advantage. When the time value of information is small and for sufficiently low investment costs, follow‐the‐leader behavior in FDI arises. Relatively high investment (fixed) costs result in follow‐the‐leader exporting behavior. When the time value of information becomes significant, the potential leader will opt for a wait‐and‐see strategy. For intermediate values of investment costs, the efficient firm invests, while the rival chooses to export.
Added Value of Intangibles for Organizational Innovation
2012
The purpose of this paper is to present the theoretical basis for a measurement and improvement system that will help organizations create a more innovative climate. The role of intangible assets in contributing to organizational innovativeness is clarified within six hypotheses on the basis of a cross-disciplinary literature review combining studies from psychology, human resources management, communication, information technology, and marketing. These factors range from the individual level to interaction with the environment surrounding the organization, and involve (a) individual psychological flexibility, (b) institutional and interpersonal trust, (c) diverse human resources, (d) strat…
Flood Frequency Analysis for Sicily, Italy
2006
In this paper a regional flood frequency analysis based on the two-component extreme value TCEV distribution is developed using flood data recorded in Sicily. The hierarchical approach, characterized by three investigation levels for estimating the parameters of the theoretical distribution, is discussed first. The highest level of homogeneity hypothesis with regard to the skewness coefficient was verified by using a Monte Carlo technique and taking account of the separation effect proposed by Matalas et al. in 1975. This analysis also showed 1 the inability of the generalized extreme value model to reproduce the empirical cumulative distribution function CDF of the skewness coefficients, a…
