Some regularity results on the ‘relativistic’ heat equation

2008

AbstractWe prove some partial regularity results for the entropy solution u of the so-called relativistic heat equation. In particular, under some assumptions on the initial condition u0, we prove that ut(t) is a Radon measure in RN. Moreover, if u0 is log-concave inside its support Ω, Ω being a convex set, then we show the solution u(t) is also log-concave in its support Ω(t). This implies its smoothness in Ω(t). In that case we can give a simpler characterization of the notion of entropy solution.

Context-Aware Visual Exploration of Molecular Datab

2006

Facilitating the visual exploration of scientific data has received increasing attention in the past decade or so. Especially in life science related application areas the amount of available data has grown at a breath taking pace. In this paper we describe an approach that allows for visual inspection of large collections of molecular compounds. In contrast to classical visualizations of such spaces we incorporate a specific focus of analysis, for example the outcome of a biological experiment such as high throughout screening results. The presented method uses this experimental data to select molecular fragments of the underlying molecules that have interesting properties and uses the res…

Agribusiness

2019

The objective of this entry is to provide noneconomists with an analytical tool with which to understand various aspects of contemporary agriculture and food and fiber systems. The first part of the entry will provide an overview of the concept of agribusiness from its conception to current times. It will then present the main challenges facing the agribusiness system in the arena of recent global competition by illustrating key critical aspects, which are related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Particular reference will be made to SDG2 which focuses explicitly on food by seeking to “end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable…

The food industry produces significant amounts of waste, many of them rich in valuable compounds that could be recovered and reused in the framework of circular economy. The development of sustainable and cost-effective technologies to recover these value added compounds will contribute to a significant decrease of the environmental footprint and economic burden of this industry sector. Application of plant extracts to improve the shelf-life, nutritional and health-related properties of ready-to-eat meat products.

2018

Plant extracts are increasingly becoming important additives in food industry due to their antimicrobial and antioxidant abilities that delay the development of off-flavors and improve the color stability in ready-to-eat (RTE) meat products. Due to their natural origin, they are excellent candidates to replace synthetic molecules, which are generally considered to have toxicological and carcinogenic effects. The efficient extraction of these antioxidant molecules from their natural sources, along with the determination of their activity in the commercialized products, have been a great challenge for researchers and food chain contributors. The objective of this review is to highlight the ap…

Agricultural Value Chain for Food Security: Challenges and Opportunities from SDG2

2019

The objective of this text is to provide non-economists with an analytical tool by which to understand various aspects of how contemporary agriculture and agribusiness systems function. It will begin by outlining Porter’s value chain paradigm and Porter’s value system. Thereafter, there will follow an overview of the meaning of agricultural value chain (AVC) and its main features.

Study of chemical changes produced in virgin olive oils with different phenolic contents during an accelerated storage treatment.

2009

Chemical changes produced in an extra virgin olive oil sample in the presence (EVOO) and absence (EVOOP) of its phenolic fraction during an accelerated storage treatment at 60 degrees C up to 7 weeks were studied. Modifications in phenol content, as well as changes in several quality parameters (free acidity, peroxide value, UV absorbance, fatty acid composition, oxidative stability index, and tocopherol content) were also evaluated under the same storage conditions and compared to those of the same sample deprived of phenolic compounds. When the phenolic extract of the EVOO was studied, a decrease of the antioxidants first present in the sample and an increase of the oxidized products were…

The significance of the concept of sin for bioethics.

2005

After a period during which the theological categories of sin and forgiveness were ignored or trivialized, presently these notions are being rediscovered. What could their impact be on bioethics, either in the narrow sense of medical ethics, or in the more encompassing sense of the ethics of the life sciences? This essay begins with describing the processes of transcending and ethitization, which gave rise to the biblical notion of sin. It portrays the theological foundation of sin in terms of a twofold refusal of proper relations to God and other humans. Through the practise of confession in the face of God (coram deo), sin is placed into a horizon of hope for forgiveness and reconciliatio…

The Educational Multimedia Clip as a Tool for Students’ Self-learning on Concept Mapping

2016

It has been already justified that concept mapping is an exceptionally suitable tool for formative assessment of structural knowledge. However, before the implementation of such type of assessment, the teacher should decide on a reasonable students’ training strategy, its implementation way, and content to be delivered. The paper focuses especially on the last mentioned issue - the selection of the content and its representational forms for an educational multimedia clip that has been developed as a main tool for students’ self-learning on concept mapping before the regular concept map based formative assessment of structural knowledge in one of the author’s taught study courses. Content re…

Lévy-type diffusion on one-dimensional directed Cantor graphs.

2009

L\'evy-type walks with correlated jumps, induced by the topology of the medium, are studied on a class of one-dimensional deterministic graphs built from generalized Cantor and Smith-Volterra-Cantor sets. The particle performs a standard random walk on the sets but is also allowed to move ballistically throughout the empty regions. Using scaling relations and the mapping onto the electric network problem, we obtain the exact values of the scaling exponents for the asymptotic return probability, the resistivity and the mean square displacement as a function of the topological parameters of the sets. Interestingly, the systems undergoes a transition from superdiffusive to diffusive behavior a…
