Effect of pH and nitrite concentration on nitrite oxidation rate

The effect of pH and nitrite concentration on the activity of the nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) in an activated sludge reactor has been determined by means of laboratory batch experiments based on respirometric techniques. The bacterial activity was measured at different pH and at different total nitrite concentrations (TNO 2). The experimental results showed that the nitrite oxidation rate (NOR) depends on the TNO 2 concentration independently of the free nitrous acid (FNA) concentration, so FNA cannot be considered as the real substrate for NOB. Practical thresholds to distinguish erosive and rill rainfall events

Abstract In this paper, 1017 rainfall events from 2008 to 2017 are used to identify the rainfall threshold that produces upland erosion at the Masse (central Italy) and Sparacia (southern Italy) experimental stations. The rainfall events are classified into three classes: non-erosive, interrill-only and rill. The threshold values for separating as correctly as possible the erosive rains (case I) and the rill rains (case II) are derived solely from the hyetograph. The Beerkan Estimation of Soil Transfer parameters (BEST) procedure is an attractive, easy, robust, and inexpensive way for a complete soil hydraulic characterization but testing the ability of this procedure to estimate the water retention curve is necessary as relatively little information is available in the literature. Numerical and experimental investigation of a cross-flow water turbine

ABSTRACTA numerical and experimental study was carried out for validation of a previously proposed design criterion for a cross-flow turbine and a new semi-empirical formula linking inlet velocity to inlet pressure. An experimental test stand was designed to conduct a series of experiments and to measure the efficiency of the turbine designed based on the proposed criterion. Structure of longitudinal chromomagnetic fields in high energy collisions

We compute expectation values of spatial Wilson loops in the forward light cone of high-energy collisions. We consider ensembles of gauge field configurations generated from a classical Gaussian effective action as well as solutions of high-energy renormalization group evolution with fixed and running coupling. The initial fields correspond to a color field condensate exhibiting domain-like structure over distance scales of order the saturation scale. At later times universal scaling emerges at large distances for all ensembles, with a nontrivial critical exponent. Finally, we compare the results for the Wilson loop to the two-point correlator of magnetic fields.

Some applications of the Chambers isoperimetric inequality

In this paper, using the Chambers isoperimetric inequality, we introduce the notion of weighted rearrangement of a function associated to the measure $f dx$, where $f(x)=e^{g(|x|)}$ for $x \in \mathbb{R}^n}$, with $g$ smooth, convex and even. Then we give some of its applications to variational inequalities and PDEs via weighted symmetrization.

Well-posedness of Prandtl equations with non-compatible data

In this paper we shall be concerned with Prandtl's equations with incompatible data, i.e. with initial data that, in general, do not fulfil the boundary conditions imposed on the solution. Under the hypothesis of analyticity in the streamwise variable, we shall prove that Prandtl's equations, on the half-plane or on the half-space, are well posed for a short time.

Rotationally symmetric 1-harmonic flows from D2 TO S 2: Local well-posedness and finite time blowup

The 1-harmonic flow from the disk to the sphere with constant Dirichlet boundary conditions is analyzed in the case of rotational symmetry. Sufficient conditions on the initial datum are given, such that a unique classical solution exists for short times. Also, a sharp criterion on the boundary condition is identified, such that any classical solution will blow up in finite time. Finally, nongeneric examples of finite time blowup are exhibited for any boundary condition.

Industrialization Strategies and Regional Actors

Against the backdrop of the partly normative, partly empirical policy framework, the major regional industrial policy documents of the African Union, EAC, ECOWAS, SACU and SADC are examined as to their applicability. The empirical cases of the West African dairy and textile value chains are used to discuss the difficulties of regional priority-setting. The precise roles of (a) regional financial institutions, (b) regional development aid, including the panoply of ‘private sector development’ (PSD) projects and (c) regional business associations are defined. A concise summary of the essentials of common industrial policy concludes the chapter.
