Prediction of N0 Irradiated Rectal Cancer Comparing MRI Before and After Preoperative Chemoradiotherapy
2017
Background: The prediction of lymph node status using MRI has an impact on the management of rectal cancer, both before and after preoperative chemoradiotherapy. Objective: The purpose of this study was to maximize the negative predictive value and sensitivity of mesorectal lymph node imaging after chemoradiotherapy because postchemoradiation node-negative patients may be treated with rectum-sparing approaches. Design: This was a retrospective study. Settings: The study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital. Patients: Sixty-four patients with locally advanced rectal cancer who underwent preoperative chemoradiotherapy and MRI for staging and the assessment of response were evaluated. Mai…
High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein and Statin Initiation
2014
The assessment of cardiovascular risk and treatment of cardiovascular diseases are major public health issues worldwide. Inflammation is now recognized as a key regulatory process that links multiple risk factors for atherosclerosis. The substantial number of patients having cardiovascular events lack commonly established risk factors. The utility of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), a circulating biomarker related to inflammation, may provide additional information in risk prediction. This review will consider the impact of hsCRP level on initiation of statin therapy.
Beurteilung der Durchgängigkeit von koronaren Bypassgefäßen mit einer 2D T2-gewichteten Turbo-Spin-Echo-Sequenz (HASTE) in Atemanhaltetechnik
1999
AIM To evaluate the patency of coronary artery bypass grafts with a 2D T2-weighted breath-hold turbo-spin-echo sequence. METHODS 38 patients with 97 grafts (19 internal mammary artery and 78 saphenous vein grafts) and a total of 120 distal anastomoses were studied at 1.5 Tesla in supine position using a phased array body coil. An ECG gated 2D T2-weighted breath-hold turbo-spin-echo sequence (HASTE) was performed. Reference method was selective coronary angiography. The image material was evaluated independently by two radiologists (observer one, a radiological fellow and the second a staff radiologist). RESULTS Observer 1 reached a sensitivity of 96% (72/75) and a specificity of 91% (20/22)…
Identifying physical activity type in manual wheelchair users with spinal cord injury by means of accelerometers
2015
Objectives: The main objective of this study was to develop and test classification algorithms based on machine learning using accelerometers to identify the activity type performed by manual wheelchair users with spinal cord injury (SCI). Setting: The study was conducted in the Physical Therapy department and the Physical Education and Sports department of the University of Valencia. Methods: A total of 20 volunteers were asked to perform 10 physical activities, lying down, body transfers, moving items, mopping, working on a computer, watching TV, arm-ergometer exercises, passive propulsion, slow propulsion and fast propulsion, while fitted with four accelerometers placed on both wrists, c…
The influence of the C1-inhibitor BERINERT® and the protein-free haemodialysate ACTIHAEMYL20%® on the evolution of the depth of scald burns in a porc…
1997
Standardized deep partial-thickness burns were inflicted on domestic pigs by scalding 30 per cent of the skin surface for 25 s with 75 degrees C hot water. The animals (n = 18; weight 25-35 kg) were divided into three groups: I, control group (n = 6), Ringer's lactate only; II, haemodialysate group (n = 6), Ringer's lactate and a protein-free haemodialysate of calf-blood (ACTIHAEMYL20%; AH) and III, C1-inhibitor group (n = 6), Ringer's lactate and C1-inhibitor (C1-INH; BERINERT). Skin biopsies were taken at defined time points (4, 28, 52 and 76 h) and investigated histologically. Depth of burn was determined morphometrically after coloration with a modified MTT-staining on frozen sections o…
Comparing Aachen Minipigs and Pietrain Piglets as Models of Experimental Pediatric Urology to Human Reference Data
2020
<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Swine had special roles in the development of minimally invasive procedures to treat vesicoureteral reflux, and minipigs have been gaining ground in recent years in experimental pediatric urology as they combine small size with less vulnerable adult physiology, but their suitability as a model has never been assessed. We therefore compared a landrace piglet with a juvenile minipig to elucidate comparability. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> We evaluated five 3-week old Pietrain piglets and five 3-month old Aachen Minipigs as representatives of landrace and minipig models based on their expected bodyweight being similar to a n…
Effects of combined electromyostimulation and gymnastics training in prepubertal girls.
2011
This study investigated the effects of a 6-week combined electromyostimulation (EMS) and gymnastic training program on muscle strength and vertical jump performance of prepubertal gymnasts. Sixteen young women gymnasts (age 12.4 ± 1.2 yrs) participated in this study, with 8 in the EMS group and the remaining 8 as controls. EMS was conducted on knee extensor muscles for 20 minutes 3 times a week during the first 3 weeks and once a week during the last 3 weeks. Gymnasts from both groups underwent similar gymnastics training 5-6 times a week. Isokinetic torque of the knee extensors was determined at different eccentric and concentric angular velocities ranging from -60 to +240° per second. Jum…
Hypokalemia shortens relative refractory period of peripheral sensory nerves in man
1977
Absolute and relative refractory periods and the sensory conduction velocity of the median and ulnar nerves were determined in six patients suffering from hypokalemia of various origins. Nerve impulse conduction and the absolute refractory period remained normal, but the relative refractory period was shortened to 1.7 to 2.6 ms at serum K+ levels from 1.6 to 2.9 mval/l. As compared with normal values this decrease was statistically significant.
