Significance of preoperative C-reactive protein as a parameter of the perioperative course and long-term prognosis in squamous cell carcinoma and ade…

2006

AIM: C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute-phase reactant and a known indicator of the malignant potential of the tumour. The aim of this study was to investigate the significance of preoperative CRP as a parameter of the perioperative course and long-term prognosis in patients with squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus. METHODS: Serum CRP was determined preoperatively in 291 of 371 patients undergoing oesophagectomy for cancer from December 1989 to March 2004. Median patient age was 59 (28-79) year, 82.5% of patients were males. Squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed in 151 (51.9%) and adenocarcinoma in 122 patients. Transhiatal oesophagectomy was done in 151 (51.9%) p…

Barium study associated with water siphon test in gastroesophageal reflux disease and its complications.

2007

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of digital cineradiography associated with the water siphon test (WST) in the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux and to compare the results with oesophageal motility study, pH monitoring and endoscopy associated with biopsy and histology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and sixty consecutive patients underwent digital cineradiography with WST, motility study, pH monitoring and endoscopy with biopsy. The presence of gastroesophageal reflux, oesophagitis, Barrett''s oesophagus and intestinal metaplasia was evaluated. RESULTS: WST vs. pH monitoring showed sensitivity of 71%, specificity of 31%, positive predictive value (PPV) of 53% …

Comparison of Foot and Hand Reaction Times among Men: A Methodologic Study Using Simple and Multiple-Choice Repeated Measurements

1995

The primary study goal was to compare visual simple and choice reaction times of the hand and foot to assess validity of measurements for evaluating subjects' ability to perform rapid, controlled movements. First, we examined the repeatability ( N = 34) for four different data-sampling methods from a series of 12 trials within sessions and between two test sessions. Simple and choice reaction times with the preferred hand and both feet were then compared among 153 healthy male volunteers aged 35 to 67 years. Pearson correlations for hand and ipsilateral and contralateral foot reaction times on simple and choice tasks (.53 to .80, p<.001) showed that psychomotor foot reaction time is a v…

Mechanical step variability during treadmill running.

1995

The present study was designed to study intra-individual step variability measured both on vertical displacement of the body (delta Z) and on step time (delta t) parameters by means of a kinematic arm and during treadmill running. A group of 17 subjects ran successively at 60%, 80%, 100% and 140% of their maximal aerobic velocity (Vamax). The total number of steps analysed was 6116. The absolute delta Z step variability (sigma delta Z) ranged between 5 mm and 21 mm while the absolute delta t variability (sigma delta t) ranged between 6 ms and 40 ms. Step variabilities were due to step asymmetry (from 38.5% to 48.5% of the step variability) and to stride variability. For submaximal velocitie…

Predictive biomarkers for complicated acute appendicitis: A prospective Ecuadorian study.

2020

The aim of the study was to determine the usefulness of known biomarkers as pre-operative predictors of complicated acute appendicitis (CAA) and perforated appendicitis (PA).This was an observational, analytic, cross-sectional, and prospective study at Hospital Teodoro Maldonado Carbo (August 2016-December 2017). Evaluated biomarkers: white blood cells count, neutrophil percentage (N%), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, glucose, total bilirubin, C-reactive protein, and procalcitonin (PCT). The statistical analysis was performed by means of the area under the receiver operating characteristics (AUROC) curve estimation. Biomarkers' cutoff point was identified using Youden's index. Sensitivity, …

Screening for generalized anxiety disorder in Spanish primary care centers with the GAD-7.

2017

The aim of the study was to determine the criterion validity of a computerized version of the General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) questionnaire to detect general anxiety disorder in Spanish primary care centers. A total of 178 patients completed the GAD-7 and were administered the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders, which was used as a reference standard. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and positive and negative likelihood ratios were calculated. A cut-off of 10 yielded a sensitivity of .87, a specificity of .78, a positive predictive value of .93, a negative predictive value of .64, a positive likelihood ratio o…

Augmented glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity and normal penetration and metabolism of dehydroepiandrosterone in mononuclear leukocytes in pso…

1986

The aim of the study was to determine a biochemical basis for the augmented oxidative metabolism found in mononuclear leukocytes (MNL) of patients with active psoriasis. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is known to inhibit glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH). We determined the activity of G-6-PDH as well as the penetration and metabolism of DHEA - diminished plasma concentrations of which have been found in psoriatics previously - in 16 patients with active psoriasis and 16 controls. MNL in patients with psoriasis possessed 52% more (p less than 0.05) G-6-PDH activity, based on cell number, and 34% more (p less than 0.05) activity, based on soluble protein. No difference in DHEA penetr…

Biomarkers for characterization of heart failure - Distinction of heart failure with preserved and reduced ejection fraction.

2016

Heart failure (HF) incidence is rising worldwide and HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) represents nearly half of all cases. Treatment options are still limited in HFpEF in comparison to HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).We analyzed biomarkers in the general population to characterize HFpEF and HFrEF and defined a biomarker index to differentiate HFpEF from HFrEF. Growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15), soluble source of tumorigenicity 2 (sST2), C-reactive protein (CRP) and NT-proBNP were measured in 5000 individuals of the population-based Gutenberg Health Study (GHS). The median follow-up time for all-cause mortality was 7.3years with 213 events.Identification of subje…

Predictive factors of severe multilobar pneumonia and shock in patients with influenza

2014

PurposeTo identify risk factors present at admission in adult patients hospitalised due to influenza virus infection during the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons—including whether infection was from pandemic or seasonal influenza A infections—that were associated with the likelihood of developing severe pneumonia with multilobar involvement and shock.MethodsProspective cohort study. Patients hospitalised due to influenza virus infection were recruited. We collected information on sociodemographic characteristics, pre-existing medical conditions, vaccinations, toxic habits, previous medications, exposure to social environments, and EuroQoL-5D (EQ-5D). Severe pneumonia with multilobar involvement a…

Wilson's disease in Spain: validation of sources of information used by the Rare Diseases Registries

2021
