Early improvement is a predictor of treatment outcome in patients with mild major, minor or subsyndromal depression

2009

Abstract Background There is substantial evidence that early improvement (EI) under antidepressant treatment is a clinically useful predictor of later treatment outcome in patients with major depressive disorders. The aim of this study was to test whether EI can also be used as a predictor for treatment outcome in patients with mild major, minor or subsyndromal depression, i.e. patients, who are typically treated by general practitioners. Methods Analyses were carried out using data from 223 patients of a 10-weeks randomized, placebo-controlled trial comparing the effectiveness of sertraline and cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) in patients with mild major, minor or subsyndromal depressio…

Muscle strength in healthy people and in patients suffering from recent-onset inflammatory arthritis.

1995

Neuromuscular function was compared among 20 patients with relatively recent onset (symptomatic period 17 +/- 24 months) rheumatoid arthritis (RA) (experimental group; EG), and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy people (control group; CG). The comparison was repeated after a period of 6 months, when 16 patients had carried out progressive strength training. At baseline maximal grip strength and maximal dynamic unilateral strength of the knee extensors in the EG were significantly (P < 0.05) lower in comparison to the CG. The groups did not differ from each other in maximal isometric strength of the trunk flexors and extensors or the knee extensors. The 6-month dynamic strength training in the …

Lateralized effect of rapid-rate transcranial magnetic stimulation of the prefrontal cortex on mood.

1996

We studied the effects of rapid-rate transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of different scalp positions on mood Ten normal volunteers rated themselves before and after rTMS on five analog scales labeled ``Tristeza99 (Sadness), ``Ansiedad99 (Anxiety), ``Alegria99 (Happiness), ``Cansancio99 (Tiredness), and ``Dolor/Malestar99 (Pain/Discomfort). rTMS was applied to the right lateral prefrontal, left prefrontal, or midline frontal cortex in trains of 5 seconds9 duration at 10 Hz and 110% of the subject9s motor threshold intensity. Each stimulation position received 10 trains separated by a 25-second pause. No clinically apparent mood changes were evoked by rTMS to any of the scalp positions …

The clinical use of statistical permutation test methodology: a tool for identifying predictive variables of outcome.

2015

<b><i>Objectives:</i></b> To identify the predictive variables affecting the outcome after radical surgery for bladder cancer by a newer statistical methodology, i.e. nonparametric combination (NPC). <b><i>Methods:</i></b> A multicenter study enrolled 1,312 patients who had undergone radical cystectomy for bladder cancer in 11 Italian oncological centers from January 1982 to December 2002. A statistical analysis<b> </b>of their medical history and diagnostic, pathological and postoperative variables was performed using a NPC test. The<b> </b>patients were included in a comprehensive database with medical history and cli…

Predictors of Re‐bleeding and Mortality Among Patients with Refractory Variceal Bleeding Undergoing Salvage Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic S…

2018

Abstract Background Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) has proven clinical efcacy as rescue therapy for cirrhotic patients with acute portal hypertensive bleeding who fail endoscopic treatment. Aims To investigate predictive factors of 6-week and 1-year mortality in patients undergoing salvage TIPS for refractory portal hypertensive bleeding. Methods A total of 144 consecutive patients were retrospectively evaluated. Three logistic regression multivariate models were estimated to individualize prognostic factors for 6-week and 12-month mortality. Log-rank test was used to evaluate survival according to Child–Pugh classes and Bureau’s criteria. Results Mean age 51±10 years,…

Free amino acid pool and muscle protein balance after resistance exercise.

2003

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of a resistance exercise session (RES) on free amino acid concentrations and protein synthesis and breakdown of the vastus lateralis (VL) muscle during recovery in male subjects. Both the exercise group (EG) and the control group (CG) consisted of six healthy physically active men. On the experiment day in fasting conditions, a stable isotopic tracer of L-[ring-2H(5)] phenylalanine was infused and EG started a heavy 50-min hypertrophic RES for lower extremities after 55 min of infusion. At the same time, CG was at rest. During recovery of 195 min after RES, several blood samples were drawn from the femoral artery (FA) and the femoral vein (FV) …

Sex differences in allelic frequencies of the 5-HT2C Cys23Ser polymorphism in psychiatric patients and healthy volunteers: findings from an associati…

2000

Polymorphisms in the serotonergic system are believed to play a role in the etiology and treatment of different psychiatric illnesses. The 5-HT2C receptor gene is X-linked, with a frequent mutation at nucleotide 68 leading to a Ser-->Cys transition at amino acid 23. Recent studies have demonstrated an impaired function of 5-HT2C receptors and an increased production of the major noradrenergic metabolite 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethyleneglycol in the cerebrospinal fluid among the subjects carrying the Ser23 allele (Lappalainen et al., 1999). Biol. Psychiatry 46:821). We genotyped patients with alcohol dependence, panic disorder without agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, narcolepsy an…

Design and validation of a patient-reported outcome measure scale in acute pancreatitis: the PAN-PROMISE study

2021

ObjectiveThis study aimed to develop and validate a patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) in acute pancreatitis (AP) as an endpoint centred on the patient.DesignA PROM instrument (PAtieNt-rePoRted OutcoMe scale in acute pancreatItis, an international proSpEctive cohort study, PAN-PROMISE scale) was designed based on the opinion of patients, professionals and an expert panel. The scale was validated in an international multicentre prospective cohort study, describing the severity of AP and quality of life at 15 days after discharge as the main variables for validation. The COSMIN (COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments) methodology was applied.…

Echocardiographic reference ranges for normal left ventricular layer-specific strain: results from the EACVI NORRE study

2020

Abstract Aims  To obtain the normal range for 2D echocardiographic (2DE) measurements of left ventricular (LV) layer-specific strain from a large group of healthy volunteers of both genders over a wide range of ages. Methods and results  A total of 287 (109 men, mean age: 46 ± 14 years) healthy subjects were enrolled at 22 collaborating institutions of the EACVI Normal Reference Ranges for Echocardiography (NORRE) study. Layer-specific strain was analysed from the apical two-, three-, and four-chamber views using 2DE software. The lowest values of layer-specific strain calculated as ±1.96 standard deviations from the mean were −15.0% in men and −15.6% in women for epicardial strain, −16.8% …
