Un palacio para un héroe: la representación del Sagrado Palacio Imperial de Constantinopla en el "Tirant lo Blanc"

2014

Joannot Martorell recovers the Gran Palacio Imperial de Constantinople in the Greek chapter of Tirant lo Blanch, in order to provide a symbolic space to the heroic projection of his main character. Tirant achieves in the fiction an impossible dream even in reality. Uses the capital of Bosphorus as a symbol for a real New Rome and rescues an enclosure that in the Christian sphere becomes the heir of the ancient Empire. In this article we will analyze with detail the resources employed by Martorell to recreate the palace environment and value the contribution of the literary text as a source for History of Art.

On Science Museums, Science Capital, and the Public Understanding of Mathematical Modelling

2020

Students’ opportunities to learn informally (e.g. by watching documentaries, visiting museums) explain socio-economic inequities in school performances. To explore informal learning about mathematical modelling, I studied two science museums, as these are environments typically visited by middle-class families. I framed the study by using the notions science capital and the public understanding of mathematical modelling (PUMM) and explored how these are mediated in science museums. The research method entailed observations of displays, artefacts, and visitors. One science museum completely detached mathematics from its use value, whereas the other offered histories of how people used mathem…

Infinitely many solutions to boundary value problem for fractional differential equations

2018

Variational methods and critical point theorems are used to discuss existence of infinitely many solutions to boundary value problem for fractional order differential equations where Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives and Caputo fractional derivatives are used. An example is given to illustrate our result.

Complete 1H and 13C NMR assignments of clerodane diterpenoids of Salvia splendens.

2006

Unambiguous and complete assignments of 1H and 13C NMR chemical shifts for five clerodane diterpenes, four of them isolated from Salvia splendens (salviarin, splendidin and splenolides A and B) and one obtained by acetylation of splenolide A, are presented. The assignments are based on 2D shift-correlated [1H,1H–COSY, 1H,13C-gHSQC–1J(C,H) and 1H,13C-gHMBC-nJ(C,H) (n = 2 and 3)] and nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) experiments. The conformation of the rings of these compounds is supported by the 3J(H,H) values and NOE results. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Assessment for the mean value total dressing method: Comparison with coupled cluster including triples methods for BF, NO+, CN+, C2, BeO, NH3, CH2, H…

1997

Limited previous experience with the mean value total dressing (MVTD) method had shown that MVTD energies for closed shell systems are generally better than CCSD(T) ones compared to FCI. The method, previously published as total dressing 2′(td-2′), is based on the single reference intermediate Hamiltonian theory. It is not a CC method but deals in a great part with the same physical effects that CC methods that incorporate amplitudes of triples such as CCSDT or its CCSDT-1n approaches. A number of test calculations comparing to diverse CC methods, as well as FCI and experiment when available, have been performed. The tests concern equilibrium energies in NH3 and CH2, equilibrium energies an…

Measuring the CO2 shadow price for wastewater treatment: A directional distance function approach

2015

Abstract The estimation of the value of carbon emissions has become a major research and policy topic since the establishment of the Kyoto Protocol. The shadow price of CO2 provides information about the marginal abatement cost of this pollutant. It is an essential element in guiding environmental policy issues, since the CO2 shadow price can be used when fixing carbon tax rates, in environmental cost-benefit analysis and in ascertaining an initial market price for a trading system. The water industry could play an important role in the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This paper estimates the shadow price of CO2 for a sample of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), using a param…

Electrocardiographic Imaging for Atrial Fibrillation: A Perspective From Computer Models and Animal Experiments to Clinical Value

2021

[EN] Electrocardiographic imaging (ECGI) is a technique to reconstruct non-invasively the electrical activity on the heart surface from body-surface potential recordings and geometric information of the torso and the heart. ECGI has shown scientific and clinical value when used to characterize and treat both atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. Regarding atrial fibrillation (AF), the characterization of the electrical propagation and the underlying substrate favoring AF is inherently more challenging than for ventricular arrhythmias, due to the progressive and heterogeneous nature of the disease and its manifestation, the small volume and wall thickness of the atria, and the relatively large…

An integrated approach based on uniform quantization for the evaluation of complexity of short-term heart period variability: Application to 24 h Hol…

2007

We propose an integrated approach based on uniform quantization over a small number of levels for the evaluation and characterization of complexity of a process. This approach integrates information-domain analysis based on entropy rate, local nonlinear prediction, and pattern classification based on symbolic analysis. Normalized and non-normalized indexes quantifying complexity over short data sequences (∼300 samples) are derived. This approach provides a rule for deciding the optimal length of the patterns that may be worth considering and some suggestions about possible strategies to group patterns into a smaller number of families. The approach is applied to 24 h Holter recordings of …

[Diagnosis of coronary microvascualar dysfunction in diabetic patients with cardiac syndrome X: comparison by current methods].

2013

The study population included 208 patients with chest pain and uninjured coronary arteries that we split into two populations: diabetics (72 patients) and non-diabetics (136 patients). We split patients with chest pain and uninjured coronary arteries that had a myocardial scintigraphy into two populations: patients with positive scintigraphy and negative. We calculated, on angiographic images of each patient, stored on suitable digital supports, Timi Frame Count (TFC), Myocardial Blush Grade (MBG) and Total Myocardial Blush Score (TMBS) using the protocol described by Gibson and Yusuf. On the basis of Yusuf's experience we imagined a new index: the Total Timi Frame Count as the sum of the t…

Rare cardiomyopathies: Diagnostic features

2013

Cardiomyopathies (CM) are an important and heterogeneous group of diseases affecting the myocardium. They can induce mechanical and/or electrical disorders and are due to a variety of causes, they frequently are genetic. However, since their high number and their clinical complexity, the identification is still a challenge. Echocardiography is a very useful tool in the assessment of CM. In this review we aim to define the typical clinical features and to discuss the main diagnostic tool, above all echocardiography that can help physicians in the correct assessment of CM.
