Elevated cerebrospinal fluid and plasma homocysteine levels in ALS

BACKGROUND: High cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma levels of homocysteine (HC) have been reported in certain neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's diseases and, recently, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). OBJECTIVES: To assay the CSF and plasma levels of HC in ALS patients and controls, and to evaluate the relationship between HC levels and clinical variables of the disease. METHODS: Cerebrospinal fluid from sixty-nine (M/F 1.87) and plasma from sixty-five ALS patients (M/F 1.83) were taken and stored at -80 degrees C until use. In silico prediction of central nervous system activity of compounds. Identification of potential pharmacophores by the TOPS–MODE approach

The central nervous system (CNS) activity has been investigated by using a topological substructural molecular approach (TOPS-MODE). A discriminant analysis to classify CNS and non-CNS drugs was developed on a data set (302 compounds) of great structural variability where more than 81% (247/302) were well classified. Randic's orthogonalization procedures was carried out to allow the interpretation of the model and to avoid the collinearity among descriptors. Centrifuge tests on strip footings on sand with a weak layer

Tests on small-scale physical models of a strip footing resting on a dense sand bed containing a thin horizontal weak soil layer were carried out at normal gravity (1 g ). The results, reported in a companion paper, point out that the weak layer plays an important role in the failure mechanism and the ultimate bearing capacity of the footing if it falls within the ground volume relevant to the behaviour of the sand–footing system. The same problem was also investigated by means of centrifuge tests on reduced-scale models at 25 g and 40 g . Predictive value of morphologic parameters for successful correction of Class II Division 2 malocclusion

Abstract The aim of this study was to assess the predictive value of pretreatment cephalometric parameters and apical base size for successful correction of Angle Class II Division 2 malocclusion. Pretreatment lateral cephalograms and pretreatment and posttreatment study casts of 96 subjects with Class II Division 2 malocclusions were examined to obtain 23 cephalometric parameters and to measure the size of the apical bases. Success of occlusal correction was evaluated as the percentage of change of peer assessment rating scores during treatment; percentage of change was the dependent variable in multivariate statistical analyses used to test the predictive value of the assessed parameters.…

In this research, we examine the motives underlying fair trade product purchase through two studies using a means-end methodology. Considering the growth of fair trade product consumption and the expansion of its distribution in two different distribution networks, a first exploratory research has been led. AbstractWe consider a definition of p,δ-variation for real functions of several variables which gives information on the differentiability almost everywhere and the absolute integrability of its partial derivatives on a measurable set. This definition of p,δ-variation extends the definition of n-variation of Malý and the definition of p-variation of Bongiorno. We conclude with a result of change of variables based on coarea formula.

In this paper we propose a sequential procedure for the estimation of a change-point when a change has occurred in the distribution that governs the process which generates the observations. The procedure applies whether the distribution functions involved are completely specified or they contain unknown parameters to be estimated. The procedure is based on the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test of goodness of fit, or an appropriate different test such as the chi-square test, and satisfies the optimality condition defined by the maximization of the sum of the p-values involved.

Thermomechanical effects in the flow of a fluid in porous media

This paper deals with analysis, by methods of extended thermodynamics, of the thermomechanical effects which arise in the flow of a weakly viscous fluid in a porous medium. Under the hypothesis that the fluid fills all the interstices among the powder and that the size of the powder grains and of the interstices is much lower than a suitable characteristic length, linearized field equations are written, which include, in a natural way, terms which take into account the Dufour, Soret, and virtual mass effects. As a limiting case when the evolution time of the heat flux goes to infinite and no entropy flux is carried, the flow of liquid helium II in a porous medium is obtained.
