The Different Role of Mothers' and Fathers' Beliefs in the Development of Adolescents' Mathematics and Literacy Task Values

2015

This study examined how interest and importance values concerning mathematics and literacy develop from grade 7 to grade 9 in comprehensive school and to what extent gender, in addition to mothers’ and fathers’ beliefs about the abilities of individual children, predicts the level of and changes in these values. A total of 206 Finnish students (100 girls, 106 boys) were followed from grade 7 to grade 9, just before an important transition from compulsory comprehensive school to secondary education occurs in the Finnish context. Students’ parents participated in the study when the students were in grade 7. The results of multivariate latent change models showed that interest and importance v…

Art of Acting and Management Style. Results of psychological research on personality and hierarchy of values of outstanding Polish actors and manager…

2018

The article – which is based on the need theory proposed by McClelland and the author’s theoretical and empirical Personality and Axiological Model – deals with the research on two groups of professionally engaged individuals: outstanding Polish actors and managers in the area of services. The results obtained indicate a significant diversity of the groups in terms of personality traits and the hierarchy of values as well as the consistency of the image in the scope of significance of dimensions related to competence and autonomy. The sphere of motivation in both groups studied is remarkably similar as well. The results show that individuals who are effective and expect professional achieve…

Exegesis and myths as methodologies of research in tourism

2013

Anthropology has given interesting paradigms to tourism-led research. From the role played by culture to the conflict between host and guest, anthropology has focused in mobility and tourism issues. Nonetheless, when we think in tourism we imagine an all-encompassing institution. There were many forms of tourism, each one enrooted in their own culture. Mythology and exegesis remind not only that other non-western forms of tourism are interesting to study but also how we can examine those cultural values that do not exist any longer. What this note of research sustains is that positivism monopolized in tourism fields some methods at the time pushing others to the periphery of knowledge, like…

Beziehung zwischen Kopfumfang und sonographischer Morphometrie der Ventrikelstrukturen im Neugeborenen- und Säuglingsalter

2001

AIM: To determine normal values of sonographic measurements of the brain in neonates and infants. METHOD: Cerebral ultrasonographic examinations were performed in 143 healthy newborns and infants. The size of the ventricles was determined by ascertaining distances as well as performing planimetric measurements of the ventricular area and circumference in standardized planes. RESULTS: Throughout the course of the study we observed a continous increase in size and a strong correlation with head circumference. The middle coronary plane used for the measurements allows the accurate representation of the ventricles and a more objective assessment of size. CONCLUSION: Based on the morphometric da…

Laboratory testing in the emergency department: an Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology (SIBioC) and Academy of Em…

2018

Abstract Background: The mainstay of patient-oriented laboratory testing in emergency settings entails selecting a number and the type of tests according to valid criteria of appropriateness. Since the pattern of urgent tests requesting is variable across different institutions, we designed a joined survey between the Academy of Emergency Medicine and Care (AcEMC) and the Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry and Clinical Molecular Biology (SIBioC) for reaching tentative consensus about the most informative diagnostic tests in emergency settings. Methods: A survey, containing the most commonly ordered urgent laboratory tests and the relative clinical indications, was disseminated to eigh…

Verbesserte Auswertbarkeit transitorisch evozierter otoakustischer Emissionen durch Korrelationsfilterung

1993

Hearing screening as well as evaluation of cochlear function under therapy with ototoxic agents or patients with various diseases is increasingly done by registration of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE). Usually the standard system ILO 88 Otodynamic Analyser is used, where until now emissions were analyzed subjectively. However, evaluation of signals may be difficult mainly in the hearing threshold area. In this article we describe a method to mathematically analyze registered emissions by correlation-filtering. This allows to better identify small specific responses, to further increase the sensitivity of TEOAE, and offers a more objective means for audiologic diagnoses.

Genetic influences on resting electrocardiographic variables in older women: a twin study.

2009

Background: Previous studies in young and middle-aged men and women have shown that resting electrocardiographic (ECG) variables are influenced by genetic factors. However, the extent to which resting ECG variables are influenced by genetic factors in older women is unknown. Thus, the aim of this study was to estimate the relative contribution of genetic and environmental influences to individual differences in resting ECG variables among older female twins without overt cardiac diseases. Methods: Resting ECG recordings were obtained from 186 monozygotic and 203 dizygotic twin individuals, aged 63–76 years. Quantitative genetic modeling was used to decompose the phenotypic variance in each …

Muscle hypertrophy, strength development, and serum hormones during strength training in elderly women with fibromyalgia.

2005

To examine the effects of strength training on maximal force, cross-sectional area (CSA), and electromyographic (EMG) activity of muscles and serum hormone concentrations in elderly females with fibromyalgia (FM).Twenty-six patients with FM were randomly assigned to a training (FMT; n = 13; mean age 60 years) or a control (FMC; n = 13; 59 years) group. FMT performed progressive strength training twice a week for 21 weeks. The measurements included maximal isometric and concentric leg extension forces, EMG activity of the vastus lateralis and medialis, CSA of the quadriceps femoris, and serum concentrations of testosterone (T), free testosterone (FT), growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth…
