Study of Obsessive Compulsive Beliefs: Relationship with Eating Disorders
2011
Background: The relationship between Eating Disorders (ED) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) has been extensively studied in the last few years. However, little effort has been devoted to studying the link between these disorders with regard to their distorted beliefs. Aims: The first objective of the study was to analyze the differences in OCD-related beliefs among ED subtypes and the general population, controlling for age, Body Mass Index, and obsessionality. The second objective was to explore which OCD beliefs explain ED symptomatology. Method: Seventy-nine ED patients without OCD comorbidity, divided into diagnostic subtypes, and 50 community participants completed the Obsessive…
Identification of two novel polymorphisms and a rare deletion variant in the human dopamine D4 receptor gene
1995
We report two novel polymorphisms and a rare deletion variant in the human dopaine D4 receptor gene. The two polymorphisms are characterized by single base pair substitutions, namely a G-->C transversion changing codon 11 from GGG (encoding Gly) to CGG (encoding Arg) and a C-->T transition in position -11 upstream from the start codon. The Arg11 variant occurs at a frequency of about 1% and the C-->T transition at a frequency of about 7% in German control subjects (n = 148). Allele frequencies observed in patients suffering from schizophrenia (n = 256) and bipolar affective disorder (n = 99) were similar. The deletion variant is characterized by a 21 bp deletion affecting codons 36 to 42 co…
Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 Serum Levels in Patients with Breast Cancer
2003
The chemokine monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 is thought to be involved in breast carcinogenesis. We evaluated MCP-1 serum levels in patients with breast cancer (n = 135), ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) I-III (n = 30), benign breast lesions (n = 143) and in healthy women (n = 27). We determined the value of MCP-1 serum levels as a differentiation marker between malignant, preinvasive and benign breast diseases and as a predictive marker for the biological phenotype of breast carcinoma. Median (range) MCP-1 serum levels in patients with breast cancer, DCIS I-III, benign breast lesions and healthy women were 200 (57-692) pg/ml, 194 (58-525) pg/ml, 174 (39-529) pg/ml and 175 (67-425)…
Adhesive and invasive features in gliomas
2000
Summary This study aims at the in situ identification of factors mediating glioma cell invasion requiring adhesion, extracellular matrix degradation, and migration. Fortyfive gliomas (astrocytomas, glioblastomas, oligodendrogliomas, and mixed gliomas) were investigated for the immunohistochemical expression of the membrane protein CD44s, the basal lamina proteins laminin, collagen IV, and fibronectin, the lectin galectin-3 recognizing tenascin and N-CAM, as well as for the matrix-degrading enzymes metalloproteinases MMP-2, MMP-9, and cathepsin D. Besides vessels expressing basal lamina proteins, tenascin, MMP-2, MMP-9, and galectin-3, tumor cells revealed strong immunoreactivity for CD44s, …
Reference Ranges and Distribution of Placental Volume by 3-Dimensional Virtual Organ Computer-Aided Analysis Between 11 Weeks and 13 Weeks 6 Days
2013
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility, reproducibility, and distribution of placental volume measurements according to the crown-rump length between 11 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days. METHODS Images were acquired in 128 pregnancies followed in Burgundy during first-trimester screening sonography using an abdominal 3-dimensional transducer. The placental volume was then calculated by the virtual organ computer-aided analysis method with a rotation angle of 30° by a single operator. RESULTS Placental volumes ranged from 33.3 to 107.6 cm(3) with a mean ± SD of 62.3 ± 14.8 cm(3); the 5th and 10th percentiles were 38.0 and 44.20 cm(3), respectively, whereas the 90th an…
External and internal exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) among workers in the production of fire-proof materials – Proposal of a biol…
2006
In 1999, we introduced the German polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) study. The study was designed as a nation-wide investigation on workers exposed to PAH. One aim of the study was to establish biological monitoring guidance values (BMGVs) for different branches. Here, we report on the production of fire-proof materials. This branch of industry is typically confronted with high exposure to PAH and with PAH-induced occupational (cancer) diseases. One hundred and thirty-five employees participated in the course of seven sampling dates in four different plants in Germany. External exposure was determined by personal air monitoring of the 16 EPA-PAH. Human biological monitoring was accompl…
Cell Death and Oxidative Damage in Inflammatory Myopathies
1998
There is evidence that muscle fibers in denervating disorders and muscular dystrophies undergo apoptosis. In 21 patients with autoimmune inflammatory myopathies, we found no features of muscle fiber apoptosis such as DNA fragmentation or expression of apoptosis-related proteins. However, muscle fibers in myositis displayed distinct up-regulation of inducible and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS). While inducible NOS was distinctly up-regulated on the sarcolemma of all kinds of muscle fibers neuronal NOS displayed increased expression in the sarcoplasm of damaged as well as atrophic muscle fibers. There were no disease-specific patterns in the different myositis subtypes. Enhanced express…
Increased Levels of Elastase and α1-Antitrypsin in Sputum of Asthmatic Patients
1998
Asthma and chronic bronchitis are inflammatory diseases associated with remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Elastin, a major component of the ECM in the airways, has been previously found to be disrupted in asthma and chronic bronchitis. This study was aimed at evaluating whether elastin disruption might be associated with an imbalance between elastase (active and total) and alpha1-proteinase inhibitor (alpha1-PI), the main inhibitor of elastase. We measured elastase and alpha1-PI in induced sputum obtained from 16 control subjects, 10 healthy smokers, 19 asthmatic patients, and 10 chronic bronchitis patients. We also assessed the possible origin of elastase, evaluating its levels…
Limited T cell receptor Vbeta-chain repertoire of liver-infiltrating T cells in autoimmune hepatitis.
1998
Abstract Background/Aims: To characterize the cellular immune reactions in autoimmune hepatitis, the T cell receptor repertoire of livre-infiltrating and circulating T cells was studied. Methods: Nucleic acids of liver-tissue and peripheral blood-derived T cells from 12 patients with untreated autoimmune hepatitis, four patients with chronic hepatitis C and three patients with toxic liver injury were extracted and analysed using a semiquantitative RT-PCR with a panel of T cell receptor Vβ family specific primers. After agarose gel electrophoresis, the distribution of T cell receptor (TCR) Vβ molecules was assessed by densitometry. Furthermore, results were compared to the TCR Vβ distributio…
Normative data on the familiarity and difficulty of 196 Spanish word fragments
2005
In this article, normative data on the familiarity and difficulty of 196 single-solution Spanish word fragments are presented. The database includes the following indices: difficulty, familiarity, frequency, number of meanings, number of letters given in the fragment, first and/or last letters given, and ratio of letters to blanks. A factor analysis was performed on difficulty, and two factors were obtained. Frequency, familiarity, and number of meanings loaded highly on the first factor, which we consider to measure lexical processes, whereas number of letters in the fragment, first and/or last letters given, and ratio of letters to blanks loaded highly on the second factor, which we judge…
