Predicting breakthrough of vanadium in fixed-bed absorbent columns with complex groundwater chemistries: A multi-component granular ferric hydroxide−…
2020
Granular ferric hydroxide (GFH) is often used for fixed bed adsorbent (FBA) columns in groundwater purification units around the world to remove arsenate contaminations. Groundwater can contain also other toxic (e.g., antimonite and vanadate) and non-toxic oxo-anions (phosphate and silicic acid) that are known to affect FBA lifetimes. Therefore, understanding the breakthrough of toxic compounds intended for removal by FBA is essential to their design, and is important to predict accurately breakthrough curves (BTCs) for FBAs in waterworks to plan future operating costs. Rapid small-scale column tests (RSCCT) and pilot-scale FBA were used to simulate vanadate BTCs for complex groundwater che…

Comparative Study of the Compressibility of M3V2O8 (M = Cd, Zn, Mg, Ni) Orthovanadates
2022
We report herein a theoretical study of the high-pressure compressibility of Cd3V2O8, Zn3V2O8, Mg3V2O8, and Ni3V2O8. For Cd3V2O8, we also present a study of its structural stability. Computer simulations were performed by means of first-principles methods using the CRYSTAL program. In Cd3V2O8, we found a previously unreported polymorph which is thermodynamically more stable than the already known polymorph. We also determined the compressibility of all compounds and evaluated the different contributions of polyhedral units to compressibility. We found that the studied vanadates have an anisotropic response to compression and that the change in volume is basically determined by the compressi…
First Crystallographic Investigation of Complexes of cis-VO2+, cis-MoO22+, and trans-UO22+ Species with Schiff-Base Molecules Derived from 4,6-O-Ethy…
2001
The interaction of Schiff-base ligands derived from 4,6-O-ethylidene-β-D-glucopyranosylamine with cis-VO 2 + , cis-MoO 2 2+ , and trans-UO 2 2+ species have been studied by isolating and characterizing the corresponding products. The structures of one complex of each type of species have been established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In all the complexes, the saccharide moiety adopts a chair conformation and has a β-anomeric form. A gradual increase in coordination number (5, 6, and 7) and a gradual variation in the geometry (distorted trigonal-bipyramidal, distorted octahedral, and pentagonal-bipyramidal) are observed on going from the complexes of cis-VO 2 + (mononuclear) …
Oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane on MgO-supported vanadium oxide catalysts
1998
Abstract Vanadium–magnesium oxide (VMgO) catalysts have been prepared, characterized and tested in the ODH of n-butane. The catalysts were prepared by two variations of the wet-impregnation method using aqueous ammonium metavanadate or organically-based methanolic vanadyl acetylacetonate solutions. The catalyst surface area depends on the vanadium content and the preparation method. Catalyst characterization (i.e. XRD, 51V NMR, FTIR, LRS) results indicate the presence of poor crystalline Mg-orthovanadate (Mg3V2O8), while the presence of other Mg-vanadates is not clear. Oxygen isotopic-exchange experiments on VMgO catalysts indicate an R2 process: [ 18 O 2 +2 16 O 2− (s) → ( 18 O 18 O 16 O 1…

The crystal structure and the vibrational and optical characteristics of flux-grown mixed lanthanide vanadate compounds SmxNd1–xVO4 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1) are reported. A linear, monot...
Multicolor upconversion luminescence of GdVO4:Ln3+/Yb3+ (Ln3+ = Ho3+, Er3+, Tm3+, Ho3+/Er3+/Tm3+) nanorods
2016
Lanthanide-doped GdVO4 nanorods that exhibit upconversion emission under 982 nm excitation have been prepared by a facile room-temperature chemical co-precipitation method followed by a subsequent annealing at temperatures of 600 degrees C, 800 degrees C and 1000 degrees C. Multicolor upconversion emission, including white, was achieved by tuning the concentrations of dopant lanthanide ions (Ho3+, Er3+, Tm3+ and Yb3+) in GdVO4. It is found that four GdVO4 samples emit light with the white chromaticity coordinates of (0.326, 0.339), (0.346, 0.343), (0.323, 0327) and (0.342, 0.340) respectively, under a single-wavelength NIR excitation. These coordinates are very close to the standard equal e…
p38 MAPK-dependent shaping of the keratin cytoskeleton in cultured cells
2007
Plasticity of the resilient keratin intermediate filament cytoskeleton is an important prerequisite for epithelial tissue homeostasis. Here, the contribution of stress-activated p38 MAPK to keratin network organization was examined in cultured cells. It was observed that phosphorylated p38 colocalized with keratin granules that were rapidly formed in response to orthovanadate. The same p38p recruitment was noted during mitosis, in various stress situations and in cells producing mutant keratins. In all these situations keratin 8 became phosphorylated on S73, a well-known p38 target site. To demonstrate that p38-dependent keratin phosphorylation determines keratin organization, p38 activity …
COOLING-INDUCED CONTRACTION OF TRACHEA ISOLATED FROM NORMAL AND SENSITIZED GUINEA-PIGS
1991
Fast (−7°C/min) cooling of guinea-pig isolated trachea produced a rapidly developing, transient contraction followed by relaxation. Cooling-induced contraction was dependent on temperature (30, 20 or 10°C) and responses in trachea obtained from actively sensitized guinea pigs were significantly greater (20 and 10°-C) than those observed in normal trachea. Cooling to 20°C was selected for subsequent experiments. Pre-treatment with sufficient concentrations of atropine, clemastine, cromoglycate, indomethacin, or nordihydroguaiaretic acid did not depress contraction to cooling in either normal or sensitized trachea. This indicates a direct effect of cooling. The contraction. produced by coolin…
Insulin-Mimetic Action of Vanadate
2001
Abstract — — The insulin-mimetic effect of vanadate is well established, and vanadate has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity in diabetic rats and humans. Although the exact mechanism(s) remain undefined, we have previously demonstrated a direct relation of intracellular free magnesium (Mg i ) levels to glucose disposal, to insulinemic responses following glucose loading, and to insulin-induced ionic effects. To investigate whether the insulin-mimetic effects of vanadate could similarly be mediated by Mg i , we utilized 31 P-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to measure Mg i in erythrocytes from normal (NL, n=10) and hypertensive (HTN, n=12) subjects, before and after incubation…
