Sign and rank covariance matrices with applications to multivariate analysis

An impaired alveolar-capillary barrier in vitro : effect of proinflammatory cytokines and consequences on nanocarrier interaction.
2009
The alveolar region of the lung is an important target for drug and gene delivery approaches. Treatment with drugs is often necessary under pathophysiological conditions, in which there is acute inflammation of the target organ. Therefore, in vitro models of the alveolar-capillary barrier, which mimic inflammatory conditions in the alveolar region, would be useful to analyse and predict effects of novel drugs on healthy or inflamed tissues. The epithelial cell line H441 was cultivated with primary isolated human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (HPMECs) or the endothelial cell line ISO-HAS-1 on opposite sides of a permeable filter support under physiological and inflammatory condi…
Fruit Quality Traits of Two Apricot Cultivars
2010
In this trial we evaluated physical and chemical fruit quality traits and sensory profile of two late-ripening apricot cultivars ‘Vitillo’ and ‘Pellecchiella’. Fruits were harvested at full maturation in three different pickings, at 4 day intervals, to ensure the same fruit quality. To verify quality among different pickings, weight, diameter, soluble solid content, titratable acidity, pH, colour were recorded. To describe and quantify the sensory characteristics of apricot fruits a panel of 10 judges generated 16 descriptors. For each of these attributes judges assigned a score from 1 to 9. Qualitative and sensory data for each attribute were submitted to one way Analysis of Variance (ANOV…
Bone Density, Balance and Quality of Life of Postmenopausal Women Taking Alendronate Participating in Different Physical Activity Programs
2010
Made available in DSpace on 2022-04-28T19:04:59Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2010-01-01 Background: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different physical activity (PA) programs on bone density, balance and quality of life of postmenopausal women taking concomitant alendronate. A quasi-experimental study was conducted with 35 volunteers divided into four groups: practitioners of resistance training (RTG, n = 9, 49.8±4.2 years), judo (JUG, n = 11, 52.2±5.3 years), water aerobics (WAG, n = 8, 57.1±7.4 years) and the control group (CG, n = 7, 53.8±4.4 years). Methods: The following assessment tools were used: bone mineral density (BMD) measured by d…
Doping and Moral Disapprovals
2020
This paper explores variance in how people morally disapprove wrongs related to doping. The variance may pertain to what type of moral disapproval a person uses or to what they disapprove of. Our exploration is both conceptual and empirical. Conceptually, we distinguish between four types of moral disapprovals that we call blame, judging blameworthy, condemnation and sadness. We elaborate these four moral phenomena through a conceptual scheme that we call the matrix of moral disapprovals. The matrix is the central conceptual innovation of our paper. It depicts how the four moral disapprovals relate to each other and characterises their typical instances. In the empirical part of the paper, …
<p>A Country Pandemic Risk Exposure Measurement Model</p>
2020
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop a Pandemic Risk Exposure Measurement (PREM) model to determine the factors that affect a country’s prospective vulnerability to a pandemic risk exposure also considering the current COVID-19 pandemic Methods: To develop the model, drew up an inventory of possible factor variables that might expose a country’s vulnerability to a pandemic such as COVID-19 This model was based on the analysis of existing literature and consultations with some experts and associa-tions To support the inventory of selected possible factor variables, we have conducted a survey with participants sampled from people working in a risk management environment carrying o…
Nonlinear radial-harmonic correlation using binary decomposition for scale-invariant pattern recognition
2003
We introduce a new scale-invariant pattern-recognition method that uses nonlinear correlation. We applied several common linear correlations to images decomposed into disjoint binary images, which is very discriminant even when the target is embedded in strong noise. We combine our sliced orthogonal nonlinear generalized correlation method and the radial-harmonic expansion in order to achieve scale-invariant pattern recognition. The information from a radial harmonic for each binary slice of the reference object is combined with binary slices of the target. The method avoids the time-consuming process of finding expansion centers for the radial harmonics. The stability of the correlation pe…
Improved rotation invariant pattern recognition using circular harmonics of binary gray level slices
2000
We introduce a new rotation invariant pattern recognition method based on nonlinear correlation. The images are decomposed into disjoint binary slices and then correlated using the common linear correlation. This operation is very discriminant even when the target is embedded in strong noise. We extend our sliced orthogonal nonlinear generalized correlation method to rotation invariant pattern recognition by combining the information of a circular harmonic (CH) of each binary slice of the reference object with binary slices of the target. In addition to improved discrimination capability, the method avoids the time-consuming process of finding proper centers for the CHs. Results are present…
Robustness of texture parameters for color texture analysis
2006
This article proposes to deal with noisy and variable size color textures. It also proposes to deal with quantization methods and to see how such methods change final results. The method we use to analyze the robustness of the textures consists of an auto-classification of modified textures. Texture parameters are computed for a set of original texture samples and stored into a database. Such a database is created for each quantization method. Textures from the set of original samples are then modified, eventually quantized and classified according to classes determined from a precomputed database. A classification is considered incorrect if the original texture is not retrieved. This metho…
Weighted nonlinear correlation for controlled discrimination capability
2002
We recently demonstrated the high discrimination capability as well as the high sensitivity to small intensity variations of the sliced orthogonal nonlinear generalized (SONG) correlation. This nonlinear correlation has a correlation matrix representation. Previous papers considered only the principal diagonal elements of the correlation matrix. We propose using the off-diagonal non-zero elements of the SONG correlation matrix in order to achieve variable discrimination performance and controlled detection adapted to the gray-scale variations. Moreover, we introduce negative coefficients in order to improve the discrimination properties of the SONG correlation. To control the degree of reco…
