Top-quark mass measurements using jet rates at LHC
2013
This work presents a new method to measure the top-quark mass in hadronic collisions[1]. The method uses the sensitivity of the tt̄ + 1-jet production on the top-quark mass. In detail we study the ℛ distribution defined as the tt̄ + 1-jet normalized cross section differential in the invariant mass of the total system and calculated at NLO accuracy. We prove that the ℛ distribution has a high sensitivity to the top-quark mass. Furthermore we investigate and quantify the impact of the dominant theoretical and experimental uncertainties. The results obtained show, that the method has the potential to be competitive in precision with established approaches and allows a complementary measurement…
Investigating the nature of light scalar mesons with semileptonic decays of D mesons
2015
We study the semileptonic decays of $D_{s}^{+}$, $D^{+}$, and $D^{0}$ mesons into the light scalar mesons [$f_{0} (500)$, $K_{0}^{\ast} (800)$, $f_{0} (980)$, and $a_{0}(980)$] and the light vector mesons [$\rho (770)$, $\omega (782)$, $K^{\ast} (892)$, and $\phi (1020)$]. With the help of a chiral unitarity approach in coupled channels, we compute the branching fractions for scalar meson processes of the semileptonic $D$ decays in a simple way. Using current known values of the branching fractions, we make predictions for the branching fractions of the semileptonic decay modes with other scalar and vector mesons. Furthermore, we calculate the $\pi ^{+} \pi ^{-}$, $\pi \eta$, $\pi K$, and $…
Measurement of the top quark mass using the invariant mass of lepton pairs in soft muon b-tagged events
2009
We present the first measurement of the mass of the top quark in a sample of t (t) over bar -> l (nu) over barb (b) over barq (q) over bar events (where l = e, mu) selected by identifying jets containing a muon candidate from the semileptonic decay of heavy-flavor hadrons (soft muon b tagging). The p (p) over bar collision data used correspond to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb(-1) and were collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measurement is based on a novel technique exploiting the invariant mass of a subset of the decay particles, specifically the lepton from the W boson of the t -> Wb decay and the muon from a semileptonic b decay. We fit template hist…
Measurement of the lifetime of the Bc +- meson in the semileptonic decay channel
2009
Using approximately 1.3 fb-1 of data collected by the D0 detector between 2002 and 2006, we measure the lifetime of the B_c meson in the B_c -> J/psi mu nu X final state. A simultaneous unbinned likelihood fit to the J/\psi+mu invariant mass and lifetime distributions yields a signal of 881 +/- 80 (stat) candidates and a lifetime measurement of \tau(B_c) = 0.448 +0.038 -0.036 (stat) +/- 0.032 (syst) ps.
Search forD0−D¯0mixing using semileptonic decay modes
2004
Based on an 87-fb{sup -1} data set collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory, a search for D{sup 0}-D-bar{sup 0} mixing has been made using the semileptonic decay modes D*{sup +}{yields}{pi}{sup +}D{sup 0}, D{sup 0}{yields}K{sup (}*{sup )}e{nu} (+c.c.). The use of these modes allows unambiguous flavor tagging and a combined fit of the D{sup 0} decay time and D*{sup +}-D{sup 0} mass difference ({delta}M) distributions. The high-statistics sample of unmixed semileptonic D{sup 0} decays is used to model the {delta}M distribution and time dependence of mixed events directly from the data. Neural networks are used to select events and reconstruct the D{sup 0}. A r…
Properties of hyperons in chiral perturbation theory
2009
The development of chiral perturbation theory in hyperon phenomenology has been troubled due to power-counting subtleties and to a possible slow convergence. Furthermore, the presence of baryon-resonances, e.g. the lowest-lying decuplet, complicates the approach, and the inclusion of their effects may become necessary. Recently, we have shown that a fairly good convergence is possible using a renormalization prescription of the loop-divergencies which recovers the power counting, is covariant and consistent with analyticity. Moreover, we have systematically incorporated the decuplet resonances taking care of both power-counting and $consistency$ problems. A model-independent understanding o…
Exclusive semileptonic and nonleptonic decays of the Bc meson
2006
We study exclusive nonleptonic and semileptonic decays of the Bc-meson within a relativistic constituent quark model previously developed by us. For the nonleptonic decays we use the factorizing approximation. We update our model parameters by using new experimental data for the mass and the lifetime of the Bc meson and the leptonic decay constants of the D-meson. We calculate the branching ratios for a large set of exclusive nonleptonic and semileptonic decays of the $B_c$ meson and compare our results with the results of other studies. As a guide for further experimental exploration we provide explicit formulas for the full angular decay distributions in the cascade decays Bc^- => J/ps…
Study ofB¯→Xuℓν¯decays inBB¯events tagged by a fully reconstructedB-meson decay and determination of|Vub|
2012
We report measurements of partial branching fractions for inclusive charmless semileptonic B decays Bbar --> Xu l nubar, and the determination of the CKM matrix element |V_{ub}|. The analysis is based on a sample of 467 million Upsilon(4S) --> BBar decays recorded with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II e^+ e^- storage rings. We select events in which the decay of one of the B mesons is fully reconstructed and an electron or a muon signals the semileptonic decay of the other B meson. We measure partial branching fractions DeltaB in several restricted regions of phase space and determine the CKM element |V_{ub}| based on four different QCD predictions. For decays with a charged lepton momentum…
Measurements of Partial Branching Fractions forB¯→Xulν¯and Determination of|Vub|
2008
We present partial branching fractions for inclusive charmless semileptonic B decays (B) over bar -> X(u)l (nu) over bar, and the determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element vertical bar V-ub vertical bar. The analysis is based on a sample of 383 x 10(6) gamma(4S) decays into B (B) over bar pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II e(+)e(-) storage rings. We select events using the invariant mass M-X of the hadronic system, the invariant mass squared, q(2), of the lepton and neutrino pair, the kinematic variable P+, or one of their combinations. We then determine partial branching fractions in limited regions of phase space: Delta B = (1.18 +/- 0.09(stat) …
Relativistic Positioning Systems in Flat Space-Time: The Location Problem
2013
The location problem in relativistic positioning is considered in flat space-time. When two formal solutions are possible for a user (receiver) of the system, its true location may be obtained from a standard set of emission data extended with an observational rule. The covariant expression giving the location of the user in inertial coordinates is decomposed with respect to an inertial observer.
